We show the possibility to periodically modulate the refractive index in a homogeneous resonant atomic medium in space or/and time while simultaneously keeping vanishing absorption or gain. Such modulation is based on periodic resonant enhancement of the refractive index, controlled by an external optical field, and opens the way to produce coherently controllable photonic structures. We suggest the possible implementation of the proposed scheme in rare-earth doped crystals with excited state absorption.  相似文献

The design and operation of a low‐volume spectroelectrochemical cell for X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of solutions at room temperature is described. Fluorescence XAS measurements are obtained from samples contained in the void space of a 50 µL reticulated vitreous carbon (sponge) working electrode. Both rapid electrosynthesis and control of the effects of photoreduction are achieved by control over the flow properties of the solution through the working electrode, where a good balance between the rate of consumption of sample and the minimization of decomposition was obtained by pulsing the flow of the solution by 1–2 µL with duty cycle of ~3 s while maintaining a small net flow rate (26–100 µL h?1). The performance of the cell in terms of control of the redox state of the sample and minimization of the effects of photoreduction was demonstrated by XAS measurements of aqueous solutions of the photosensitive FeIII species, [Fe(C2O4)3]3?, together with that of the electrogenerated [Fe(C2O4)3]4? product. The current response from the cell during the collection of XAS spectra provides an independent measure of the stability of the sample of the measurement. The suitability of the approach for the study of small volumes of mM concentrations of protein samples was demonstrated by the measurement of the oxidized and electrochemically reduced forms of cytochrome c.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to relate algebraic quantum mechanics to topos theory, so as to construct new foundations for quantum logic and quantum spaces. Motivated by Bohr’s idea that the empirical content of quantum physics is accessible only through classical physics, we show how a noncommutative C*-algebra of observables A induces a topos \({\mathcal{T}(A)}\) in which the amalgamation of all of its commutative subalgebras comprises a single commutative C*-algebra \({\underline{A}}\) . According to the constructive Gelfand duality theorem of Banaschewski and Mulvey, the latter has an internal spectrum \({\underline{\Sigma}(\underline{A})}\) in \({\mathcal{T}(A)}\) , which in our approach plays the role of the quantum phase space of the system. Thus we associate a locale (which is the topos-theoretical notion of a space and which intrinsically carries the intuitionistic logical structure of a Heyting algebra) to a C*-algebra (which is the noncommutative notion of a space). In this setting, states on A become probability measures (more precisely, valuations) on \({\underline{\Sigma}}\) , and self-adjoint elements of A define continuous functions (more precisely, locale maps) from \({\underline{\Sigma}}\) to Scott’s interval domain. Noting that open subsets of \({\underline{\Sigma}(\underline{A})}\) correspond to propositions about the system, the pairing map that assigns a (generalized) truth value to a state and a proposition assumes an extremely simple categorical form. Formulated in this way, the quantum theory defined by A is essentially turned into a classical theory, internal to the topos \({\mathcal{T}(A)}\).These results were inspired by the topos-theoretic approach to quantum physics proposed by Butterfield and Isham, as recently generalized by Döring and Isham.  相似文献

The Difference of Gaussian (DOG) filter is widely used in optics and image processing as, among other things, an edge detection and correlation filter. It has important biological applications and appears to be part of the mammalian vision system. Background

Targeted delivery of pharmaceutical agents into selected populations of CNS (Central Nervous System) neurons is an extremely compelling goal. Currently, systemic methods are generally used for delivery of pain medications, anti-virals for treatment of dermatomal infections, anti-spasmodics, and neuroprotectants. Systemic side effects or undesirable effects on parts of the CNS that are not involved in the pathology limit efficacy and limit clinical utility for many classes of pharmaceuticals. Axonal transport from the periphery offers a possible selective route, but there has been little progress towards design of agents that can accomplish targeted delivery via this intraneural route. To achieve this goal, we developed a tripartite molecular construction concept involving an axonal transport facilitator molecule, a polymer linker, and a large number of drug molecules conjugated to the linker, then sought to evaluate its neurobiology and pharmacological behavior.

Results

We developed chemical synthesis methodologies for assembling these tripartite complexes using a variety of axonal transport facilitators including nerve growth factor, wheat germ agglutinin, and synthetic facilitators derived from phage display work. Loading of up to 100 drug molecules per complex was achieved. Conjugation methods were used that allowed the drugs to be released in active form inside the cell body after transport. Intramuscular and intradermal injection proved effective for introducing pharmacologically effective doses into selected populations of CNS neurons. Pharmacological efficacy with gabapentin in a paw withdrawal latency model revealed a ten fold increase in half life and a 300 fold decrease in necessary dose relative to systemic administration for gabapentin when the drug was delivered by axonal transport using the tripartite vehicle.

Conclusion

Specific targeting of selected subpopulations of CNS neurons for drug delivery by axonal transport holds great promise. The data shown here provide a basic framework for the intraneural pharmacology of this tripartite complex. The pharmacologically efficacious drug delivery demonstrated here verify the fundamental feasibility of using axonal transport for targeted drug delivery.  相似文献

We present a density functional theory study of a variety of nitridosilicate and oxonitridoaluminosilicate systems. For the nitridosilicates, we have shown that the DFT-calculated equilibrium structures of BaYb-Si4N7, SrYb-Si4N7 and EuYb-Si4N7 are in good agreement with experiment. We then used the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) to study the effects of oxygen-doping on the nitrogen sites. We then added Si/Al disorder into our system, in order to model the properties of BaYb-SiAlON for pressures up to 50 GPa, in order to investigate recent experimental findings. We have found that this system is stable over the whole pressure range, and that the compression mechanism is pure bond length shortening.  相似文献

In this paper we consider compactifications of heterotic strings in the presence of background flux. The background metric is a T2 fibration over a K3 base times four-dimensional Minkowski space. Depending on the choice of three-form flux different amounts of supersymmetry are preserved (N=2,1,0N=2,1,0). For supersymmetric solutions unbroken space–time supersymmetry determines all background fields except one scalar function which is related to the dilaton. The heterotic Bianchi identity gives rise to a differential equation for the dilaton which we discuss in detail for solutions preserving an N=2N=2 supersymmetry. In this case the differential equation is of Laplace type and as a result the solvability is guaranteed.  相似文献

Nanoparticle suspensions (also called nanofluids) are often polydisperse and tend to settle with time. Settling kinetics in these systems are known to be complex and hence challenging to understand. In this study, polydisperse spherical alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles in the size range of ~10–100 nm were dispersed in water and examined for aggregation and settling behaviour near its isoelectric point. A series of settling experiments were conducted and the results were analysed by photography and by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The settling curve obtained from standard bed height measurement experiments indicated two different types of behaviour, both of which were also seen in the SAXS data. But the SAXS data were remarkably able to pick out the rapid settling regime as a result of the high temporal resolution (10 s) used. By monitoring the SAXS intensity, it was further possible to record the particle aggregation process for the first time. Optical microscopy images were produced on drying and dried droplets extracted from the suspension at various times. Dried deposits showed the rapid decrease in the number of very large particles with time which qualitatively validates the SAXS prediction, and therefore its suitability as a tool to study unstable polydisperse colloids.  相似文献

We consider an impacting mechanical system in which a particle at position u(t) impacts with a periodically moving obstacle at position z(t), the motion of which is non-smooth. In particular we look at corner events when u impacts with z very close to a point where z loses smoothness. We show that this leads, through a corner bifurcation, to complex dynamics in u which can include periodic orbits of arbitrary period and period-adding cascades. By analysing associated maps close to the corner event, we show that this dynamics can be understood in terms of the iterations of a two-dimensional, piecewise linear, discontinuous map. We also show some links between this analysis and the difficult problem of understanding the motion of three objects which may have simultaneous impacts.  相似文献
