On the transverse vibration of a rubber string

The nearly constant pitch of the sound radiated by a sufficiently stretched rubber cord, a phenomenon observed independently by two experimenters at the turn of the century, is explained analytically for three ideal rubberlike material models. Transverse vibrational frequency data for three kinds of rubber strings, obtained with the aid of a novel laser apparatus, are compared with the analytical results. A numerical scheme is introduced to compute from the experimental data the apparent average number of links in a molecular chain of a rubberlike material from both simple tension and transverse frequency measurements. It is shown that the nearly flat frequency response is a molecular network finite extensibility effect that is controlled by the apparent number of links in a chain of the molecular network structure.     

Morphological control of synthesis and anomalous magnetic properties of 3-D branched Pt nanoparticles

Morphology-controllable platinum nanostructures could be obtained by modulating the growth kinetics in oleylamine. The nanostructures evolve from spherical particles to branched networks with decreasing reaction temperature, and the complexity of the branched-network nanostructures increases with the extended reaction period. Size-dependent magnetic properties and enhanced ferromagnetism in dodecanethiol-capped Pt branched nanostructures indicate that the permanent magnetic moments are probably introduced by broken symmetry and charge transfer because charge transfers more effectively from dodecanethiol than from oleylamine.     

A trinuclear heterobimetallic Ru(II)/Pt(II) complex as a chemodosimeter selective for sulfhydryl-containing amino acids and peptides

A trinuclear heterobimetallic Ru(II)/Pt(II) complex, cis-{Ru(phen)2[CN-Pt(DMSO)Cl2]2} (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), is able to function as a "switch-on" luminescent chemodosimeter for sulfhydryl-containing amino acids and peptides via specific binding of the amino acids/peptides with the Pt(II) centers and the subsequent cleavage of the Ru(II)-Pt(II) cyano-bridge.     

Type 2 intramolecular N-acylnitroso Diels-Alder reaction: scope and application to the synthesis of medium ring lactams

Heteroatom variants of the type 2 intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction provide an efficient method for the preparation of bridged bicyclic heterocycles. The type 2 variant of the intramolecular N-acylnitroso Diels-Alder reaction is an effective method for the synthesis of bridged bicyclic oxazinolactams. Structural studies of the cycloadducts have allowed for quantification of the deformations of the bridgehead functionalities and provided a strategy for the stereoselective synthesis of substituted seven- and eight-membered ring lactams. Diastereoselective cycloadditions followed by cleavage of the oxazine ring afford azepin-2-ones or azocin-2-ones.     

Metal Oxide Thin Films Containing Au Nano-Particles Prepared with Gas Diffusion Method

Au particles dispersed thin metal oxide films were prepared from precursor films containing HAuCl₄ with H₂S gas diffusion method. HAuCl₄ was uniformly dissolved in the films as promoted by hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC). The mechanism of the Au particle formation was studied. It was found that HAuCl₄ was converted directly to Au metal particles upon contacting with H₂S gas. Au particles generated by this method were characterized with small particle size, sharp size distribution and high volume fraction in the films. The surface plasma resonance absorption of Au particles shifted to longer wavelength when TiO₂ component was introduced in the matrix.     

Type 2 intramolecular N-acylnitroso diels-alder reaction: stereoselective synthesis of bridged bicyclic oxazinolactams

[reaction: see text] The type 2 intramolecular N-acylnitroso Diels-Alder reaction has been employed for the synthesis of substituted bridged bicyclic oxazinolactams. Upon oxidation of hydroxamic acid 6, a 3-benzylated oxazinolactam (7) was synthesized with complete diastereoselectivity. Elaboration of cycloadduct 7 liberated a cis-3,7-disubstituted azocin-2-one (9).     

Synthesis of 2'-O-methoxyethylguanosine using a novel silicon-based protecting group

A short and efficient synthesis of 2'-O-methoxyethylguanosine (8) is described. Central to this strategy is the development of a novel silicon-based protecting group (MDPSCl(2), 2) used to protect the 3',5'-hydroxyl groups of the ribose. Silylation of guanosine with 2 proceeded with excellent regioselectivity and in 79% yield. Alkylation of the 2'-hydroxyl group of 6 proceeded with methoxyethyl bromide and NaHMDS and afforded compound 7 in 85% yield, without any noticeable cleavage of the silyl protecting group and without the need to protect the guanine base moiety. Finally, deprotection of 7 was achieved using TBAF and produced 8 in 97% yield.
