Domestic petroleum-related expertise utilization and Nigeria's oil industry survival: A multicriteria decision analysis

Despite Nigeria's current economic crisis and the need to remove control structures which were originally designed to protect national interest so as to attract foreign investment in upstream activities of its oil sector, the notion of an indigenously controlled oil sector is still alive in the country. The current paper utilizes a multiperiod goal programming model to examine the effect the enforcement of Nigeria's Petroleum Decree on the utilization of domestic petroleum-related expertise would have on the survival of the multinational oil companies and, therefore, of the oil industry. The results indicate that there are some benefits to the nation in enforcing the Decree, but that to do so now will trigger a chain of events that will culminate in the demise of the oil industry. The results also highlight the danger in using legislation to regulate strategic industries and the role operational researchers can play in public policy design and decisions in the future.     

Different types of intermittent chaos in Josephson junctions. Manifestation in the I–V characteristics

In digital and analog simulations of the RCSJ-model of a Josephson junction we find both Pomeau-Manneville type I and type III intermittency; they are related to a square root and to a linear voltage onset, respectively.     

High temperature crossover in paraconductivity of granular Y1Ba2Cu3O7-y

We have examined the deviation from linearity of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of a YBaCuO ceramics. We have observed at high temprature a crossover behavior toward a logarithmic temperature dependence at lower temperature. It seems relevant to attribute the origin of such a term to a pair breaking mechanism contribution, thus to give a lower bound to the existence of superconductivity fluctuations onset temperature. Our findings also implies that carriers are bosons aboveT _c .

Performance-improvement in57Fe-DCEMS by an optimized scintillation counter

Applications of DCEMS or ICEMS for UHV studies of surfaces and interfaces are often severely limited by long recording times. To clarify the practical means to shorten this time, we introduce the “statistical utility rate” α characterizing the statistical quality of a given measurement. By improving detection efficiency and reducing background contribution simultaneously, we have developed an extremely low-noise scintillation detector (Hamamatsu R1635-02 or R2557 photomultiplier with P-47 thin-layer phosphor). Performance comparison with a channeltron by⁵⁷Fe-DCEMS measurements on an 90% enriched⁵⁷Fe foil with 7.2 keV electrons reveals a measuring time gain over an order of magnitude in favour of the scintillation e-detector. Improvements achievable for samples with normal isotope abundance are higher than for enriched ones.     

Free and cyclic hypermodules

Summary This paper is a study of the theory of hypermodules. At first an example of a hypermodule is given which leads us to some interesting applications. After that the free and the cyclid hypermodules are introduced and examined.     

Crystallization of bisphenol-A polycarbonate induced by organic salts: Chemical modification of the polymer. II. Model reactions

In the presence of sodium o-chlorobenzoate, bisphenol-A diphenylcarbonate (BADPC) undergoes complex chemical modifications from 170°C. Reaction between BADPC and minute amounts of salt produces sodium phenoxide end groups which undergo a fast exchange reaction with the carbonate groups of BADPC. In a closed system, an equilibrium molecular weight distribution is progressively attained which agrees fairly well with the one predicted from a simple model based on Bernoulli statistics. In an open system, the equilibrium is continuously displaced by the evaporation of volatile diphenyl carbonate. This leads to a steady increase of the molecular weight.
