Synthesis of 4-alkoxy-Δ3-pyrrolin-2-ones and tetramic acids

Acetoacetic ester is converted into 4-alkoxy-Δ³-pyrrolin-2-ones which can be hydrolyzed to give tetramic acids.     

Template-guided organization of chromonic liquid crystals into micropatterned anisotropic organic solids

We have developed an approach to generate micropatterns of anisotropic organic materials which exploits the self-organization, driven by pi-stacking and hydrophobic interactions, of an ionic perylenebis(dicarboximide) in aqueous solutions.     

Remarkably large remote-stereocenter-induced chromatographic differences: azulenyl 1,5-diols

A series of four new azulene-1,5-diol diastereomers were prepared and found to exhibit large differences (ΔR_f 0.22–0.46) in silica TLC mobilities despite having stereocenters four bonds apart. The stereoisomers were identified by X-ray crystallography, and in all cases the RR/SS diastereomers were less strongly retained than the RS/SR diastereomers. The crystal structures suggested that this is due to a conformational preference for the CF₃ groups to be nearly perpendicular to the plane of the azulene ring, which caused the dihedral angle between the OH groups to be larger (in the RR/SS diastereomers) or smaller (in the RS/SR diastereomers). The smaller dihedral angles allow the RS/SR diastereomers to simultaneously bind to a silica surface and thus be more strongly retained. Two similar benzene derivatives and several cycloalkanediols with more proximate stereocenters showed little or no difference in mobilities between diastereomers, though the NMR differences were greater. Thus, the azulene ring is an important factor in enforcing the conformational preferences, either through steric interactions with the 4/8 substituents (H or methyl) or its significant dipole moment, or both.     

Wavelets and molecular structure

Summary The wavelet method offers possibilities for display, editing, and topological comparison of proteins at a user-specified level of detail. Wavelets are a mathematical tool that first found application in signal processing. The multiresolution analysis of a signal via wavelets provides a hierarchical series of best lower-resolution approximations. B-spline ribbons model the protein fold, with one control point per residue. Wavelet analysis sets limits on the information required to define the winding of the backbone through space, suggesting a recognizable fold is generated from a number of points equal to 1/4 or less the number of residues. Wavelets applied to surfaces and volumes show promise in structure-based drug design.This paper is based on a presentation given at the 14th Molecular Graphics and Modelling Society Conference, held in Cairns, Australia, August 27–September 1, 1995.     

Evaluation of the BAX system for detection of Listeria monocytogenes in foods: collaborative study

A multilaboratory study was conducted to compare the automated BAX system and the standard cultural methods for detection of Listeria monocytogenes in foods. Six food types (frankfurters, soft cheese, smoked salmon, raw, ground beef, fresh radishes, and frozen peas) were analyzed by each method. For each food type, 3 inoculation levels were tested: high (average of 2 CFU/g), low (average of 0.2 CFU/g) and uninoculated controls. A total of 25 laboratories representing government and industry participated. Of the 2335 samples analyzed, 1109 were positive by the BAX system and 1115 were positive by the standard method. A Chi square analysis of each of the 6 food types, at the 3 inoculation levels tested, was performed. For all foods, except radishes, the BAX system performed as well as or better than the standard reference methods based on the Chi square results.
