When more than one sinusoid is used as a masker, more masking is observed than would be predicted by a simple combination of their individual effects. This masking is dramatically increased when the masker components vary in frequency and intensity with each presentation. These studies manipulated several masker parameters under conditions of high masker uncertainty, examining the effect of excluding critical-band components, fixing or randomizing component amplitudes and frequencies, and narrowing the frequency range of the components. The signal was always a 200-ms, 1000-Hz sinusoid, presented simultaneously with the 200-ms masker. Removing critical-band components reduced the amount of masking, but considerable masking remained that appears to be nonperipheral in origin. Fixing masker frequencies across the two intervals of a trial greatly reduced the masking observed, whereas fixing masker amplitudes had no effect. Reducing the frequency range from 5000 to 2700 Hz generally increased the masking observed, but appeared to depend on other masker parameters. Summaries across ten listeners show individual differences that are resistant to extensive training. It is difficult to account for most of the masking observed in terms of masker energy falling near the region of the signal.  相似文献

NMR velocimetry has been used to observe the steady-shear rheological behaviour of a concentrated suspension of hard-sphere like 370 nm diameter PMMA core-shell latex particles at the volume fraction Φ = 0.46, the liquid core of the spheres rendering possible NMR observation of the particles themselves. Rheological measurements in a cone-and-plate geometry indicate that when aged (i.e. left at rest for two weeks), the material exhibits yield stress behaviour at very low shear rates. For shear rates greater than 1 s - 1 a transition to liquid-like behaviour was observed, leading to a rejuvenated fluid state which exhibits shear-thinning behaviour over a wide range of shear rates. A similar yield stress behaviour was reflected in NMR velocimetry measurements in a Couette geometry, where the solid-to liquid transition could be clearly observed. Under steady-state flow, the fluid state inside the radius at which yield stress was observed, exhibited shear-thinning behaviour with a power law exponent n slowly approaching unity with increasing shear rate. This behaviour has some similarities with a model of Derec et al. in which aging and rejuvenation effects compete. Substantial wall slip was observed both at the inner and at the outer wall, an effect which disappeared as the shear rate was increased. No radial particle migration from the high-shear region at the inner wall was observed.  相似文献

The concept of reaction route (RR) graphs introduced recently by us for kinetic mechanisms that produce minimal graphs is extended to the problem of non-minimal kinetic mechanisms for the case of a single overall reaction (OR). A RR graph is said to be minimal if all of the stoichiometric numbers in all direct RRs of the mechanism are equal to +/-1 and non-minimal if at least one stoichiometric number in a direct RR is non-unity, e.g., equal to +/-2. For a given mechanism, four unique topological characteristics of RR graphs are defined and enumerated, namely, direct full routes (FRs), empty routes (ERs), intermediate nodes (INs), and terminal nodes (TNs). These are further utilized to construct the RR graphs. One algorithm involves viewing each IN as a central node in a RR sub-graph. As a result, the construction and enumeration of RR graphs are reduced to the problem of balancing the peripheral nodes in the RR sub-graphs according to the list of FRs, ERs, INs, and TNs. An alternate method involves using an independent set of RRs to draw the RR graph while satisfying the INs and TNs. Three examples are presented to illustrate the application of non-minimal RR graph theory.  相似文献

A simple matrix formalism presented by Callaghan [J. Magn. Reson.129, 74–84 (1997)], and based on the multiple propagator approach of Caprihanet al.[J. Magn. Reson. A118, 94–102 (1996)], allows for the calculation of the echo attenuation,E(q), in spin echo diffusion experiments, for practically all gradient waveforms. We have extended the method to the treatment of restricted diffusion in parallel plate, cylindrical, and spherical geometries, including the effects of fluid–surface interactions. In particular, theq-space coherence curves are presented for the finite-width gradient pulse PGSE experiment and the results of the matrix calculations compare precisely with published computer simulations. It is shown that the use of long gradient pulses (δ a2/D) create the illusion of smaller pores if a narrow pulse approximation is assumed, while ignoring the presence of significant wall relaxation can lead to both an underestimation of the pore dimensions and a misidentification of the pore geometry.  相似文献

Magnetic susceptibility differences in porous media produce local gradients within the pore space. At high magnetic fields, these inhomogeneities have the potential to greatly affect nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. We undertake a study using a new NMR technique to measure the internal gradients present in highly heterogeneous samples over a wide range of magnetic field strengths. Our results show that even at ultra-high fields there can exist signal at internal gradient strengths sufficiently small that techniques for suppressing unwanted side effects have the possibility to be used. Our findings encourage the use of these high and ultra-high field strengths for a broader range of samples. Our results also give experimental evidence to support the theory of internal gradient scaling as a function of field strength within pores.  相似文献

Using NMR velocimetry and mechanical measurements we study the flow dynamics, within a cone-and-plate rheometer, of the wormlike micelle system, cetylpyridinium chloride/sodium salicylate (CPyCl/NaSal) at 100 mM/60 mM concentration in distilled water. Depending on precise conditions within the system, two classes of behaviour are observed, one in which the boundary between different shear rate phases fluctuates rapidly (on the order of tens of milliseconds) and one in which it migrates slowly with a time constant of many seconds. These modes of behaviour may depend on minor solution impurities, which presumably affect the detailed constitutive properties, but also on the externally applied shear rate within a given system. We argue that the slow migrations are governed by stress relaxation effects while the rapid migrations are flow driven and arise from interfacial instability. We present a new method for observing fluid diffusion in a porous medium. The method employs 2D exchange spectroscopy for molecules diffusing in the presence of local magnetic field inhomogeneities, in our case distilled water in various sized glass bead packs. Our experiment involves an acquisition and evolution time domain with the two Fourier domains corresponding to the spectral distribution of local fields. We show that exchange in the internal magnetic field can be seen in a 2D spectrum with a characteristic time on the order of that required to diffuse 0.15 sphere diameters with similar behavior found for computer simulations. The method is potentially useful for studying the internal migrations in more complicated systems such as sandstones or other porous media.  相似文献
