Titration microcalorimetry is used to study the influences of iodide, bromide, and chloride counterions on the aggregation of vesicle-forming 1-methyl-4-(2-pentylheptyl)pyridinium halide surfactants. Formation of vesicles by these surfactants was characterised using transmission electron microscopy. When the counterion is changed at 303 K through the series iodide, bromide, to chloride, the critical vesicular concentration (cvc) increases and the enthalpy of vesicle formation changes from exo- to endothermic. With increase in temperature to 333 K, vesicle formation becomes strongly exothermic. Increasing the temperature leads to a decrease in enthalpy and entropy of vesicle formation for all three surfactants. However the standard Gibbs energy for vesicle formation is, perhaps surprisingly, largely unaffected by an increase in temperature, as a consequence of a compensating change in both standard entropy and standard enthalpy of vesicle formation. Interestingly, standard isobaric heat capacities of vesicle formation are negative, large in magnitude but not strikingly dependent on the counterion. We conclude that the driving force for vesicle formation can be understood in terms of overlap of the thermally labile hydrophobic hydration shells of the alkyl chains. The effects exhibited by adsorbed conducting polyaniline on the redox process on a molybdenum oxide surface were studied. Thermogravimetric results indicate a 4% polyaniline deposition. Cyclic voltammograms of the adsorbed polymer on MoO3 show that polyaniline exerts remarkable effects on the molybdenum blue oxidation-reduction process, with oxidation and reduction potentials of 0.33 and 0.18 V, respectively. This effect strongly enhances the electrode response, and can be used as an important tool in qualitative and/or quantitative determinations of molybdenum in solution as well as in any substrate. Nanowires are formed by indenting and subsequently retracting two pieces of sodium metal. Their cross section gradually reduces upon retraction and the diameters can be obtained from the conductance. In previous work we have demonstrated that when one constructs a histogram of diameters from large numbers of indentation-retraction cycles such histograms show a periodic pattern of stable nanowire diameters due to shell structure in the conductance modes. Here, we report the observation of a modulation of this periodic pattern, in agreement with predictions of a supershell structure.  相似文献

57Fe Mössbauer measurements have been made on the ternary ThMn12-type intermetallic compounds Gd(Fe6–x Cr x )Al6 withx=0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0, at temperatures of 4.2 and 77 K. The principal effect of the Cr substitution is to reduce the57Fe magnetic hyperfine field at 4.2 K in this series. The analysis of the57Fe Mössbauer spectra is consistent with a ferromagnetic coupling between the Gd and Cr magnetic moments. The dynamic electronic structure of atoms and molecules can be directly observed by means of the (e, 2e) reaction, which measures the distribution of energies and momenta of two electrons in coincidence after a knockout reaction initiated by an electron beam of known momentum incident on a molecular gas target. The molecular state for each event is identified by the electron separation energy. The recoil momentum for each event is known from the difference of measured initial and final momenta. It has been verified that values of this momentum are equal under suitable conditions to the momentum of the electron in the target immediately before knockout. Thus the spherically-averaged electron momentum distribution for each molecular orbital is measured. This is directly related to molecular orbitals calculated by the methods of quantum chemistry. Properties obtained by this method for different types of molecules are discussed.  相似文献

The reactivity of a series of bicyclic olefins with nitrenes is profoundly influenced by the nature of remote functional groups. There is a marked lack of reactivity for reactions with carboethoxynitrene as compared to phthalimidonitrene which is distinctly nucleophilic in character. An explanation for the reluctance to form aziridines is offered in terms of orbital interactions between the distant groups and the olefinic bond, making the latter remarkably electron deficient as evidenced by UV-photoelectron spectrosoopy. Because of the complexity of the spectra, identification of the Ip associated with the reactive π-centre was made by recourse to ab initio configuration interaction calculations for key members of the series.  相似文献

We have observed the effects of phonon mode softening at the ferroelectric transition in Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3 by 151Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. Both Eu2+ and Eu3+ spectral components are observed in the relative area ratio of 90% : 10% and both show a decrease in subspectral area at the transition, centred at 175 K, due to phonon mode softening. Surprisingly, the temperature dependence of the f-factor shows a much stronger response in the Eu3+ component than in the Eu2+ one. Preliminary analysis of neutron powder diffraction data rules out the possibility that some of the europium might be located on titanium sites.  相似文献

Background

We have recorded responses from single neurons in murine visual cortex to determine the effectiveness of the input from the two murine cone photoreceptor mechanisms and whether there is any unique selectivity for cone inputs at this higher region of the visual system that would support the possibility of colour vision in mice. Each eye was stimulated by diffuse light, either 370 (strong stimulus for the ultra-violet (UV) cone opsin) or 505 nm (exclusively stimulating the middle wavelength sensitive (M) cone opsin), obtained from light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the presence of a strong adapting light that suppressed the responses of rods.

Results

Single cells responded to these diffuse stimuli in all areas of striate cortex. Two types of responsive cells were encountered. One type (135/323 – 42%) had little to no spontaneous activity and responded at either the on and/or the off phase of the light stimulus with a few impulses often of relatively large amplitude. A second type (166/323 – 51%) had spontaneous activity and responded tonically to light stimuli with impulses often of small amplitude. Most of the cells responded similarly to both spectral stimuli. A few (18/323 – 6%) responded strongly or exclusively to one or the other spectral stimulus and rarely in a spectrally opponent manner.

Conclusion

Most cells in murine striate cortex receive excitatory inputs from both UV- and M-cones. A small fraction shows either strong selectivity for one or the other cone mechanism and occasionally cone opponent responses. Cells that could underlie chromatic contrast detection are present but extremely rare in murine striate cortex.  相似文献

The ease of formation of aziridine and/or epoxides from a series of bicyclic olefins, where distant sulphonyl groups are present, is very variable. There is some correlation between reactivity of the vinyl group and its π-ionisation potential which is high in the present molecules relative to comparison olefins. This increase is thought to be due to the presence of orbital interactions through bonds and/or through space between the sulphone group and the double bond, making the latter electron deficient. The ionisation potentials were determined by UV-photoelectron spectroscopy and the assignments made by recourse to ab initio configuration interaction methods.  相似文献
