Iridium(III) and rhodium(III) cyclometalated complexes containing sulfur and selenium donor ligands

Treatment of [M(Buppy)₂Cl]₂ (M=Ir (1), Rh (2); BuppyH=2-(4^′-tert-butylphenyl)pyridine) with Na(Et₂NCS₂), K[S₂P(OMe)₂], and K[N(Ph₂PS)₂]₂ afforded monomeric [Ir(Buppy)₂(S^∧S)] (S^∧S=Et₂NCS₂ (3), S₂P(OMe)₂ (4), N(PPh₂S)₂ (5)) and [Rh(Buppy)₂(S^∧S)] (S^∧S=Et₂NCS₂ (6), S₂P(OMe)₂ (7), N(PPh₂S)₂ (8)), respectively. Reaction of 1 with Na[N(PPh₂Se)₂] gave [Ir(Buppy)₂{N(PPh₂Se)₂}] (9). The crystal structures of 3, 4, 7, and 8 have been determined. Treatment of 1 or 2 with AgOTf (OTf=triflate) followed by reaction with KSCN gave dinuclear [{M(Buppy)₂}₂(μ-SCN)₂] (M=Ir (10), Rh (11)), in which the SCN⁻ ligands bind to the two metal centers in a μ-S,N fashion. Interaction of 1 and 2 with [Et₄N]₂[WQ₄] gave trinuclear heterometallic complexes [{Ir(Buppy)₂}₂(μ-WQ₄)] (Q=S (12), Se (13)) and [{Rh(Buppy)₂}₂{(μ-WQ)₄}] (Q=S (14), Se (15)), respectively. Hydrolysis of 12 led to formation of [{Ir(Buppy)₂}₂{W(O)(μ-S)₂(μ₃-S)}] (16) that has been characterized by X-ray diffraction.     

Minimizing maximum lateness of jobs in inventory constrained scheduling

This paper focuses on a machine scheduling problem having applications in truck scheduling at transshipment terminals. Jobs increase and decrease, respectively, the level of a central inventory. Naturally, jobs decreasing the inventory level can be processed only if the level of the inventory is high enough not to drop below zero. We consider the problem to find a schedule for jobs such that the maximum lateness among all jobs is minimized. We develop properties of optimal solutions, lower bounds, and heuristic methods in order to find upper bounds. These are incorporated in four branch and bound algorithms that are based on fixing sequences of jobs in forward or backward direction in two different types of representations. By means of a computational study, we compare these approaches with each other in order to show their efficiency.     

Fabrication of 3D electrospun structures from poly(lactide‐co‐glycolide acid)–nano‐hydroxyapatite composites

The fabrication of three‐dimensional (3D) electrospun composite scaffolds was presented in this study. Layers of electrospun meshes made from composites of poly(lactide‐co‐glycolide acid) (PLGA) and hydroxyapatite (HA) were stacked and sintered using pressurized gas. Three HA concentrations of 5, 10, and 20 wt % were tested, and the addition of the HA nanoparticles decreased the tensile mechanical properties of the meshes with 20 wt % HA. However, after the gas absorption process, the fibers within the mesh sintered, which improved the mechanical properties more than twofold. The fabrication of 3D, porous, electrospun scaffolds was also demonstrated. The resulting 3D scaffolds had open porosity of up to 70% and modulus of ～20 MPa. This technique improves on the current electrospinning technology by overcoming the challenges of depositing a thick, 3D structure. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Oxygenase‐Catalyzed Desymmetrization of N,N‐Dialkyl‐piperidine‐4‐carboxylic Acids

γ‐Butyrobetaine hydroxylase (BBOX) is a 2‐oxoglutarate dependent oxygenase that catalyzes the final hydroxylation step in the biosynthesis of carnitine. BBOX was shown to catalyze the oxidative desymmetrization of achiral N,N‐dialkyl piperidine‐4‐carboxylates to give products with two or three stereogenic centers.     

Fluorescence Properties of Frog Skeletal Muscles Treated with Lanthanide Ions

Laser-induced fluorescence from frog skeletal muscle fibers treated with lanthanides, Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺, was recorded. The fluorescence was weak and overlapped with the Raman scattering by the Ringer solution when the muscle fibers were illuminated with an argon-ion laser. The fluorescence decay rate of the lanthanide in Ringer's solution was 2–3 times larger than that of the lanthanide bound to the muscle fiber. The number of water molecules coordinated to the lanthanide bound to the muscle fiber was determined to be about three. This suggests that lanthanide ions bind superficially to the outer membrane of the muscle fiber.     

A calibrated model of local food system of Hawaii: What are the economic implications of the state's food goals and policies?

We develop a fully calibrated positive mathematical programming model for Hawaii's local food systems—which captures the production and the consumer sides of the market. Then we use the model to assess two proposed policies—a general excise tax (GET) exemption on locally produced foods, and an investment in agricultural infrastructure. For the GET exemption case, our results indicate an economic gain of $118 per $100 cost. On the other hand, an investment in 1,200 acres of land injected to support local production may generate an economic gain of up to $357 per $100 annual cost of the investment. However, these estimates should be considered preliminary, and thus viewed with caution. Although the model is used to capture Hawaii's local food systems, we believe that our model is generalizable and can be adopted by other economies to assess their respective food localization policies. Recommendations for Resource Managers

• Local food policies need to be based on quantitative terms instead of mere armchair speculation because often their potential outcomes may vary significantly.

• The current modeling framework demonstrates the potential of using positive mathematical programming (PMP) in capturing the intricacies of local food systems. However, this exploratory exercise should be viewed as preliminary in nature and the ensuing results were taken with caution because many important factors such as labor availability may have been left out.

• Thus, further model refinements are necessary to better capture the complexities of local food systems such as farm heterogeneity, availability of farm labor, water availability, and interisland transportation of farm products in the case of Hawaii.

     

Metal complexes as potential modulators of inflammatory and autoimmune responses

Over the past few decades, the realm of inorganic medicinal chemistry has been dominated by the study of the anti-cancer properties of transition metal complexes, particularly those based on platinum or ruthenium. However, comparatively less attention has been focused on the development of metal complexes for the treatment of inflammatory or autoimmune diseases. Metal complexes possess a number of advantages that render them as attractive alternatives to organic small molecules for the development of therapeutic agents. In this perspective, we highlight recent examples in the development of transition metal complexes as modulators of inflammatory and autoimmune responses. The studies presented here serve to highlight the potential of transition metal complexes in modulating inflammatory or immune pathways in cells.     

Tuning of Supramolecular Architectures of l‐Valine‐Containing Dicyanoplatinum(II) 2,2′‐Bipyridine Complexes by Metal–Metal, π–π Stacking,and Hydrogen‐Bonding Interactions

A series of newly synthesized dicyanoplatinum(II) 2,2′‐bipyridine complexes exhibits self‐assembly properties in solution after the incorporation of the l ‐valine amino units appended with various hydrophobic motifs. These l ‐valine‐derived substituents were found to have critical control over the aggregation behaviors of the complexes in the solution state. On one hand, one of the complexes was found to exhibit interesting circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals at low temperature due to the formation of chiral spherical aggregates in the temperature‐dependent studies. On the other hand, systematic transformation from less uniform aggregates to well‐defined fibrous and rod‐like structures via Pt???Pt and π–π stacking interactions has also been observed in the mixed‐solvent studies. These changes were monitored by UV/Vis absorption, emission, circular dichroism (CD), and CPL spectroscopies, and morphologies were studied by electron microscopy.
