Flow fluctuation measurement in the flow-through path of continuous electric-discharge CO<Subscript>2</Subscript>-laser contour

We have experimentally proved the applicability of hot-wire anemometer method to measure fluctuations at low pressures and gas flow rates when medium is no longer considered as continuous. Use of individual calibration at working conditions serves to apply standard technique for determination of sensitivity coefficients of hot-wire probes. Additional investigations are necessary to take into account influence of Knudsen number and, possibly, other parameters in heat transfer law presented as criterial dependence of Nusselt number on Reynolds number. Hot-wire measurement of mean velocity distribution and their fluctuations in the flow-through path of electric-discharge CO₂ laser have been performed. The level of velocity fluctuations in the vicinity of anode is high that is caused by the zone of interacting flows from the ventilators rotating in opposite directions forming in the symmetry plane. Placing of the damping screen between the ventilator and air gap allows decreasing fluctuations intensity to the acceptable level. It has been ascertained that the vortex shedding with high intensity of fluctuations which influence is noticeable in significant part of air gap is formed in the wake behind the streamlined cathode. However, pulsation level in the proper gap does not exceed permissible values.     

Thin-film capacitance models

Models for distributed capacitance in a thin film are derived in the form of a system of local RC diffusion equations coupled by a global elliptic equation. Such models contain the local geometry of the distributed capacitance on which charge pis stored and the exchange of current flux on its interface with the medium. Certain singular limits are characterized, and the resulting degenerate initial-boundary-value problems are shown to be well posed.     

Ribbon tile invariants

Let be a finite set of tiles, and a set of regions tileable by . We introduce a tile counting group as a group of all linear relations for the number of times each tile can occur in a tiling of a region . We compute the tile counting group for a large set of ribbon tiles, also known as rim hooks, in a context of representation theory of the symmetric group.

The tile counting group is presented by its set of generators, which consists of certain new tile invariants. In a special case these invariants generalize the Conway-Lagarias invariant for tromino tilings and a height invariant which is related to computation of characters of the symmetric group.

The heart of the proof is the known bijection between rim hook tableaux and certain standard skew Young tableaux. We also discuss signed tilings by the ribbon tiles and apply our results to the tileability problem.

     

Bounds on the largest Kronecker and induced multiplicities of finite groups

We give new bounds and asymptotic estimates on the largest Kronecker and induced multiplicities of finite groups. The results apply to large simple groups of Lie type and other groups with few conjugacy classes.     

Cycle-maximal triangle-free graphs

We conjecture that the balanced complete bipartite graph _{K⌊n/2⌋,⌈n/2⌉}$K_{\lfloor n/2\rfloor ,\lceil n/2\rceil }$ contains more cycles than any other n$n$-vertex triangle-free graph, and we make some progress toward proving this. We give equivalent conditions for cycle-maximal triangle-free graphs; show bounds on the numbers of cycles in graphs depending on numbers of vertices and edges, girth, and homomorphisms to small fixed graphs; and use the bounds to show that among regular graphs, the conjecture holds. We also consider graphs that are close to being regular, with the minimum and maximum degrees differing by at most a positive integer k$k$. For k=1$k=1$, we show that any such counterexamples have n≤91$n\le 91$ and are not homomorphic to _C5$C_5$; and for any fixed k$k$ there exists a finite upper bound on the number of vertices in a counterexample. Finally, we describe an algorithm for efficiently computing the matrix permanent (a #P$\#P$-complete problem in general) in a special case used by our bounds.     

Hopf hypersurfaces in complex two-plane Grassmannians with generalized Tanaka-Webster \mathfrak{D}^ \bot-parallel structure Jacobi operator

Regarding the generalized Tanaka-Webster connection, we considered a new notion of \(\mathfrak{D}^ \bot\) -parallel structure Jacobi operator for a real hypersurface in a complex two-plane Grassmannian G ₂(? ^m+2) and proved that a real hypersurface in G ₂(? ^m+2) with generalized Tanaka-Webster \(\mathfrak{D}^ \bot\) -parallel structure Jacobi operator is locally congruent to an open part of a tube around a totally geodesic quaternionic projective space ?P ⁿ in G ₂(? ^m+2), where m = 2n.     

Prescribed scalar curvature plus mean curvature flows in compact manifolds with boundary of negative conformal invariant

Using a geometric flow, we study the following prescribed scalar curvature plus mean curvature problem: Let \((M,g_0)\) be a smooth compact manifold of dimension \(n\ge 3\) with boundary. Given any smooth functions f in M and h on \(\partial M\), does there exist a conformal metric of \(g_0\) such that its scalar curvature equals f and boundary mean curvature equals h? Assume that f and h are negative and the conformal invariant \(Q(M,\partial M)\) is a negative real number, we prove the global existence and convergence of the so-called prescribed scalar curvature plus mean curvature flows. Via a family of such flows together with some additional variational arguments, we prove the existence and uniqueness of positive minimizers of the associated energy functional and give a confirmative answer to the above problem. The same result also can be obtained by sub–super-solution method and subcritical approximations.
