Multilevel description of the Rh isotopes in the interacting boson-fermion model

We present a multilevel calculation within the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model (IBFM-1) of the odd-mass ^101–109Rh isotopes. We calculate both positive- and negative-parity states of the same hamiltonian, starting from the $\text{1g}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>9</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$, $\text{2p}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>1</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$, $\text{2p}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>3</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$, $\text{lf}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>5</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$ and $\text{2d}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>5</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$ single-particle orbitals. We discuss energy spectra, electromagnetic E2 transition rates and one-nucleon transfer properties. We also discuss the influence of the $\text{1f}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>7</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$ orbital on the one-nucleon transfer properties. The results of the calculation for the negative-parity states are compared with the results of the $\text{U(}\text{6}\text{12}$) supersymmetry scheme of the interacting boson model.     

Growth and structure of crystalline silica sheet on Ru(0001)

Thin SiO? films were grown on a Ru(0001) single crystal and studied by photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy. The experimental results in combination with density functional theory calculations provide compelling evidence for the formation of crystalline, double-layer sheet silica weakly bound to a metal substrate.     

An Accurate and Efficient Algorithm for the Computation of the Characteristic Polynomial of a General Square Matrix

An algorithm is presented for the efficient and accurate computation of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a general square matrix. The algorithm is especially suited for the evaluation of canonical traces in determinant quantum Monte-Carlo methods.     

Magnetic dipole moments near Sn: Measurement on isomeric 11/2 states in odd-A Te and Te by NMR/ON

On-line low temperature nuclear orientation (OLNO) experiments have been performed on the odd-A Te isotopes ¹³¹Te and ¹³³Te using the technique of nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei (NMR/ON). The magnetic moments of the isomeric 11/2⁻ states have been measured extending the known data on these states in the Te isotopes up to the neutron shell closure at N = 82. The contribution to the 11/2⁻ magnetic moment in ¹³³Te due to core polarisation is calculated using an RPA shell model as well as corrections to the magnetic dipole operator caused by mesonic exchange currents. The neutron number dependence of the magnetic moments of the 11/2⁻ isomers in heavy Te isotopes is discussed in terms of particle-core coupling model (PCM) calculations.     

On the controversy over tailweight of distributions

Although understanding tail behavior of distributions is important in many areas, such as telecommunications network analysis and finance, there is considerable controversy about distinctions between exponential-type and power-type tails. This paper explains why the distinctions are surprisingly difficult for popular methods in the literature, and why particularly large samples are needed for clear discrimination.     

The strength of electric monopole transitions and the decay out of superdeformed bands

The strength of electric monopole (E0) transitions is related to differences in mean-square charge radii and differences in quadrupole deformation in nuclei. Estimates are made of E0 decay versus M1, E1, and E2 decay out of superdeformed bands. It is suggested that E0 decay may dominate, providing a (partial) answer to the superdeformed band “drainingr problem.
