Optical activity, used here for the first time to gain information about the amorphous solid state, allows previously unavailable insight into the dynamic properties of polymer glasses and their effect on a chemical process. This is accomplished by dispersing in polymer glasses atropisomeric bridged binaphthyls with appended oligophenyl paddles of varying sizes and studying the racemization kinetics as a function of temperature. The racemization occurs by a simple one-dimensional twisting motion and, without effect on the intrinsic mechanism, sweeps out a variable volume of the matrix as the paddle length is increased. The racemization is limited by the polymer matrix only for probes with a minimum paddle size and only when the time scale for racemization is comparable to the time scale for segmental motion of the polymer matrix. The high barrier for this racemization is unique in probe studies of glasses and causes these overlapping time scales to occur significantly below the glass transition temperature. These measurements yield a clear quantitative view of the role of segmental dynamics on the racemization kinetics of the binaphthyls and allow the important demonstration, via the transition from first-order to stretched exponential kinetics, that heterogeneous dynamics persist deep within the glassy state.  相似文献

Instrumental neutron activation analysis was used for the analysis of 25 trace elements in airborne particulate matter (PM) for air pollution monitoring. For the collection of air samples, the Gent stacked filter unit low volume sampler and two types of Nuclepore polycarbonate filters were employed. Samples were collected at selected sampling dates in suburban and industrial regions of Daejon city in the Republic of Korea. Mass concentrations and black carbon of PM were measured, and enrichment factors were calculated. The results were used to describe the emission sources and their correlation patterns.  相似文献

Orbital interaction analysis is employed to understand the complex charge transfer mechanism operative in endohedral metallofullerenes of composition NSc3@Cn (n = 68, 78). This phenomenon combines substantial electron transfer from the core to the cage with electron backdonation, involving the interaction between the occupied orbitals of the negatively charged cage and the unoccupied d orbitals of the positively charged core. This electron backdonation differs fundamentally from conventional orbital hybridization, which takes place primarily between the HOMO of the metal core and the LUMO of the fullerene cage. These findings imply the pronounced stability of NSc3@Cn (n = 68, 78), especially for NSc3 encapsulated in the non-IPR C68 enclosure, as experimentally established.  相似文献

The photo‐initiated cationic polymerization (PCP) of epoxides using diaryliodonium salt photoacid generators (PAGs) bearing alkyl groups and anions was investigated. The properties and reactivities of a series of iodonium salts containing various cations and anions were compared in the context of a PCP reaction. The products from the decomposition of the cations of these salts were analyzed using gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) spectra. The relationship between the molecular structure of the salts and their reaction mechanism in the PCP reaction was investigated. Based on the results of the investigation, it was concluded that the structures of the cations and anions of theiodonium salts affect the PCP reaction rate, which was controlled by the products from the diaryliodonium salts. The large number of possible chemical reactions represents a severe burdenfor modeling of even relatively simple plasma systems. Reduced sets ofchemical reactions have been obtained for numerical simulations of nitrogenand nitrogen-hydrogen plasma jets flowing into an atmospheric airenvironment. The important or active reactions are determined based on asimplified reduction method. A reaction is considered active if it leadsto higher sensitivities than a specified cutoff sensitivity of 1%. Theactive reactions exert a significant influence on main plasma parameters,such as velocity, temperature, and species concentrations. The sensitivityanalysis for the specified systems shows that two NO reactions, known asZel'dovich reactions (N2+ONO+N andNO+OO2+N),(1) are both active in a nitrogenplasma jet. On the other hand, the latter is not active and may be omittedin a nitrogen–hydrogen plasma jet. A nitrogen–hydrogen plasmajet requires contribution of two active charge exchange reactions:N2+N+N+ 2+N andN+H+N+ +H, while only the former is needed in a nitrogen plasmajet. The effect of alcohol washing on the anatase-rutile transition of precipitated titanium oxide was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry. Alcohol (butanol) rinsing accelerated the anatase-rutile transition of precipitated titanium oxide powder so that the onset temperature of transition decreased drastically from 800 degrees C for water-washed powder to 550 degrees C for alcohol-rinsed powder. Alternation of transition kinetics and mechanisms by rinsing media could be confirmed from the analysis of temperature and time dependence of rutile content. The attributability of the chemical state of anatase after crystallization, which contained H(2)O, OH, and organic residues, to the change of transition kinetics with alcohol rinsing will be discussed. Two mechanisms, the effect of residual organics and/or H(2)O(OH), could be suggested on the basis of analysis of the difference between chemical states of water-washed anatase and alcohol-rinsed powder. To elucidate the epigenetic mechanisms of drug resistance, epigenetically reprogrammed H460 cancer cells (R-H460) were established by the transient introduction of reprogramming factors. Then, the R-H460 cells were induced to differentiate by the withdrawal of stem cell media for various durations, which resulted in differentiated R-H460 cells (dR-H460). Notably, dR-H460 cells differentiated for 13 days (13dR-H460 cells) formed a significantly greater number of colonies showing drug resistance to both cisplatin and paclitaxel, whereas the dR-H460 cells differentiated for 40 days (40dR-H460 cells) lost drug resistance; this suggests that 13dR-cancer cells present short-term resistance (less than a month). Similarly, increased drug resistance to both cisplatin and paclitaxel was observed in another R-cancer cell model prepared from N87 cells. The resistant phenotype of the cisplatin-resistant (CR) colonies obtained through cisplatin treatment was maintained for 2–3 months after drug treatment, suggesting that drug treatment transforms cells with short-term resistance into cells with medium-term resistance. In single-cell analyses, heterogeneity was not found to increase in 13dR-H460 cells, suggesting that cancer cells with short-term resistance, rather than heterogeneous cells, may confer epigenetically driven drug resistance in our reprogrammed cancer model. The epigenetically driven short-term and medium-term drug resistance mechanisms could provide new cancer-fighting strategies involving the control of cancer cells during epigenetic transition.Subject terms: Tumour heterogeneity, Epigenetics  相似文献

Since hollow-fiber flow field-flow fractionation (HF FIFFF) utilizes a cylindrical channel made of a hollow-fiber membrane, which is inexpensive and simple in channel assembly and thus disposable, interests are increasing as a potential separation device in cells, proteins, and macromolecules. In this study, performance of HF FIFFF of proteins is described by examining the influence of flow rate conditions and length of fiber (polyacrylonitrile or PAN in this work) on sample recovery as well as experimental plate heights. The interfiber reproducibility in terms of separation time and recovery was also studied. Experiments showed that sample recovery was consistent regardless of the length of fiber when the effective field strength (equivalent to the mean flow velocity at the fiber wall) and the channel void time were adjusted to be equivalent for channels of various fiber lengths. This supported that the majority of sample loss in HF FIFFF separation of apoferritin and their aggregates may occur before the migration process. It is finally demonstrated that HF FIFFF can be applied for characterizing the reduction in Stokes' size of low density lipoproteins from blood plasma samples obtained from patients having coronary artery disease and from healthy donors.  相似文献

Catalytic combustion of chlorobenzene over supported vanadium oxides has been investigated. TiO2 was prepared by the sol-gel method from titanium isopropoxide. The supported vanadium oxide catalysts have been prepared by precipitation-deposition and impregnation method and characterized by XRD, FT-Raman and TPR. In the VOx/TiO2catalysts prepared using the impregnation method, when vanadium loading reaches 3 wt.%, the activity shows a maximum. However, in the VOx/TiO2catalysts prepared by precipitation-deposition, when vanadium loading reaches 7 wt.%, the activity shows a maximum. This result suggests that the precipitation-deposition can yield a higher metal loading on the support and a high dispersion compared to the impregnation method. Imide-siloxane block copolymer/silica hybrid membranes with covalent bonds were prepared via sol–gel reaction. The structural informations of these hybrid membranes were obtained by using Fourier transform-infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (29Si NMR), XPS and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The gas separation properties of the hybrid membranes were also investigated in terms of organosiloxane (PDMS) or silica content at various temperatures. In the hybrids, the addition of PDMS phase increased the permeabilities of gases such as He, CO2, O2, and N2, indicating that the gas transport occurred mainly through rubbery organic matrix. Meanwhile, the PDMS phase contributed the decreased gas selectivities to nitrogen but the reduction in selectivities was very small in comparison with other siloxane containing polymeric membranes. This might be due to the restriction of chain mobility by the existence of inorganic component such as silica network in the hybrids. Additionally, the increase of silica content in these hybrid membranes considerably retarded the falling-off of gas selectivity at elevated temperature. The increase of silica content in hybrid membranes resulted in well-formed silica networks and hence these inorganic components restricted the plasticization of organic matrix by the thermal segmental motion of organic components, leading to preventing the large decrease of the gas selectivity.  相似文献
