Use of basic dyes in the determination of anions, particularly as a means of determining antimony, thallium, and gallium

The use of xanthene, triphenylmethane and other basic dye cations as reagents for the determination of anions is reviewed. Elements and anions determined include Sb, Tl, Ga, Au, Te, In, Zn, Ta, Hg, Re, Sn, U, Os, B, Cr, Ag, ClO(4)(-), PO(4)(-), SO(4)(2-) and NO(3)(-). Difficulties encountered in developing satisfactory procedures involving basic dyes are discussed. Procedures for the purification and analysis of basic dye samples are outlined.     

Solvent effects on substitution reactions at complexes of the [Fe(CN)5L]3- type in binary aqueous mixtures

Summary The kinetics of replacement of 4,4-bipyridine, (4,4-bipy), and 4-cyanopyridine, (4-CNpy), by cyanide in [Fe(CN)₅-(4,4-bipy)]^3-. at 298 K have been studied in binary aqueous mixtures containing different amounts of t-butanol, methanol, glycerol, ethyleneglycol and sucrose. The plots of logarithms of the limiting rate constantsversus the mole fraction of water are linear over the entire composition range studied, showing the importance of solvation phenomena. A different straight line of log (k_L/s^–1)versus X_H2O is obtained for each mixture, indicating the influence of other solvent parameters on the reaction rate. A multiparameter regression of G _exp with A (acidity vector), B (basicity vector) and G^E is used for both reactions; plots of G _calc versus G _exp are linear with slopes of near unity.     

Synthesis of pyrrolo[3,2-b]benzofurans and pyrrolo[3,2-b]naphthofurans via addition of a silyloxypyrrole to activated quinones

The uncatalyzed reaction of N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-2-tert-butyldimethylsilyloxypyrrole 3 with 1,4-quinones bearing an electron withdrawing group at C-2 has been studied. Use of 1,4-quinones 4, 5 bearing an ester group at C-2 provided an efficient synthesis of the respective pyrrolidinobenzofuran adduct 9 or pyrrolidinonaphthofuran adduct 10 whereas use of 1,4-quinones 6, 7 and 8 bearing an acetyl group at C-2 afforded silyloxypyrroles 11, 12 and 13 resulting from direct electrophilic substitution of the silyloxypyrrole by the electrophilic quinone. Addition of Eu(fod)₃ to the reaction of 2-acetyl-1,4-naphthoquinone 7 and 3-acetyl-5-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone 8 with N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-2-tert-butyldimethylsilyloxypyrrole 3 provided a method for obtaining the pyrrolidinonaphthofuran adducts 14 and 15 together with silyloxypyrroles 12 and 13. Oxidative rearrangement of pyrrolidinonaphthofuran adduct 15 to pyrrolidino pyranonaphthoquinone 16 using ceric ammonium nitrate in acetonitrile provided a novel approach for the synthesis of an aza-analogue of the pyranonaphthoquinone antibiotic kalafungin.     

Solvatochromism and piezochromism of pentacyanoferrate(II) complexes in binary aqueous solvent media

Summary The solvatochromic behaviour of a number of pentacyano-ferrates (II), [Fe^II(CN)₅L] ^n-, is described, for solutions in H₂O-alcohol, -Me₂CO and -DMSO mixtures. The strong dependence of solvent sensitivity on the nature of the ligand L is particularly fully documented for H₂OMeOH mixtures (0–100% MeOH). The piezochromic behaviour of seven pentacyanoferrates(II) has been established, in aqueous solution. The connection between piezochromism and solvatochromism is detailed, and the solvatochromic results discussed in terms of (preferential) solvation.     

New N-Substituted (±)-Dehydronorglaucine Analogs

The aporphine alkaloid N-carbethoxydehydronorglaucine (1) was found to have promising in vitro antitumor activity, but poor water solubility. We report the synthesis of 1, the efficient hydrolysis of its urethane group and the further transformation into several new dehydronorglaucine analogs.     

The Preparation of Immunosuppressant SR-31747

The preparation of immunosuppressant SR-31747 is described. Attempts to install the Z-allyl amine included Lindlar partial hydrogenation and vinyl stannane methodologies. Ultimately, the Wittig olefination of aldehyde 12, with the ylide derived from β-aminoethyl phosphonium salt 13 proved successful.
