Remarks on the forces generated by two-neutrino exchange

A brief up-to-date review of the long-range forces generated by two neutrino exchange is presented. The potential due to exchange of a massive neutrino–antineutrino pair between particles carrying weak charge might be larger than expected if the neutrinos have not only masses but also magnetic moments close to the present experimental bounds. It still remains too small to be observable.

Host-guest-driven copolymerization of tetraphosphonate cavitands

The outstanding complexing properties of tetraphosphonate cavitands towards N‐methylpyridinium salts were exploited to realise a new class of linear and cyclic AABB supramolecular polymers through host–guest interactions. The effectiveness of the selected self‐association processes was tested by ¹H NMR studies, whereas microcalorimetric analyses clarified the binding thermodynamics and revealed the possibility of tuning entropic contributions by acting on the flexibility of the guest linker. Although the formation of linear polymeric chains for a rigid system was demonstrated by X‐ray analysis, the presence of a concentration‐dependent ring–chain equilibrium was indicated by solution viscosity measurements in the case of a very flexible ditopic BB guest co‐monomer.     

Thermal expansion of supported and freestanding graphene: lattice constant versus interatomic distance

By using ab initio molecular dynamics calculations, we show that even where the graphene lattice constant contracts, as previously reported for freestanding graphene below room temperature, the average carbon-carbon distance increases with temperature, in both free and supported graphene. This results in a larger corrugation at higher temperature, which can affect the interaction between graphene and the supporting substrate. For a weakly interacting system as graphene/Ir(111), we confirm the results using an experimental approach which gives direct access to interatomic distances.     

Para‐hydrogen induced polarization of Si‐29 NMR resonances as a potentially useful tool for analytical applications

Para‐hydrogen–induced polarization effects have been observed in the ²⁹Si NMR spectra of trimethylsilyl para‐hydrogenated molecules. The high signal enhancements and the long T₁ values observed for the ²⁹Si hyperpolarized resonances point toward the possibility of using ²⁹Si for hyperpolarization applications. A method for the discrimination of multiple compounds and/or complex mixtures of hydroxylic compounds (such as steroids), consisting of the silylization of alcoholic functionalities with an unsaturated silylalkyl moiety and subsequent reaction with para‐H₂, is proposed. Crystallography of vitamin B12 proteins

This review deals with results from crystallographic studies on proteins that interact with the essential micronutrient cobalamin (vitamin B12). Both B12-dependent enzymes and B12-transport proteins are described with an emphasis on structural aspects of cobalamin and its protein environment.     

Chloride interference in the determination of bromate in drinking water by reagent free ion chromatography with mass spectrometry detection

Bromate, a well known by-product of the ozonation of drinking water, has been included among the substances which have to be monitored in the drinking water according to the last EC Directive 251/98 on potable water with a regulated limit of 10 microg l(-1). The need of performing routine analysis at this limit is a driving force for the developing of new simple and sensitive methods of detection, which should be also able to overcome the effect of matrix composition. This work explored the use of mass spectrometry detection with electrospray ionisation hyphenated to a reagent free ion chromatograph with hydroxide gradient elution for the determination of bromate in drinking water. The use of a high capacity hydroxide selective column operated in gradient mode allowed to avoid the interference by carbonate peak, which moved to longer retention times. The effect of increasing chloride concentrations from 0 to 250 mg l(-1), which is the guideline limit for drinking water in Directive 251/98/EC, was to decrease absolute mass spectrometric response and chromatographic efficiency and, on the consequence, to increase the effective detection limits. The effect of the chloride concentration on the detection of bromate is discussed.     

Synthesis of 3-substituted-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-naphth[1,2-d]-imidazole-2,4,5-triones and 1-Substituted-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-naphth[2,3-d]imidazole-2,4,9-triones

Tricyclic compounds with an imidazolinone ring fused to 1,2- and 1,4-naphtoquinones were synthesized by a reaction of 4-amino-1,2-naphthoquinone and 2-amino-1,4-naphthoquinone with electrophilic symmetric and non symmetric diazenes.     

BPPLIB: a library for bin packing and cutting stock problems

The bin packing problem (and its variant, the cutting stock problem) is among the most intensively studied combinatorial optimization problems. We present a library of computer codes, benchmark instances, and pointers to relevant articles for these two problems. The library is available at http://or.dei.unibo.it/library/bpplib. The computer code section includes twelve programs: seven are directly downloadable from the library page, while for the remaining five we provide addresses where they can be obtained or downloaded. Some of the codes for which we provide an original C++ implementation need an integer linear programming solver. For such cases, the library provides two versions: one that uses the commercial solver CPLEX, and one that uses the freeware solver SCIP. The benchmark section provides over six thousands instances (partly coming from the literature and partly randomly generated), together with the corresponding solutions. Instances that are difficult to solve to proven optimality are included. The library also includes a BibTeX file of more than 150 references on this topic and an interactive visual tool to manually solve bin packing and cutting stock instances. We conclude this work by reporting the results of new computational experiments on a number of computer codes and benchmark instances.     

Models and algorithms for fair layout optimization problems

Given a non-convex two-dimensional area and identical rectangular stands, we consider the problem of placing the maximum number of stands in the area, by satisfying a number of operational constraints. We present linear programming models and show the total unimodularity of the matrices associated with their constraint sets. We then give computational results obtained by applying the models to the real-world case of the Beira Mar handcraft fair of Fortaleza (Brazil).
