An algebraic characterization of vacuum states in Minkowski space

An algebraic characterization of vacuum states on nets ofC ^*-algebras over Minkowski space is given and space-time translations are reconstructed with the help of the modular structures associated with such states. The result suggests that a condition of geometrical modular action might hold in quantum field theories on a wider class of spacetime manifolds.     

Product states for local algebras

Let ()() and () () be the von Neumann algebras associated with the space-tiem regions and respectively in the vacuum representation of the free neutral massive scalar field. For suitably chosen spacelike separated regions and it is proved that there exists a normal product state of (), Some consequences for the algebraic structure of the local rings are pointed out.     

Measurement of the W-->taunu production cross section in pp collisions at square root s=1.8 TeV

We report on a measurement of sigma(pp-->W+X)B(W-->taunu) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity (lum) of 18 pb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector during 1994-1995. We find that sigma(pp-->W+X)B(W-->taunu)=2.22+/-0.09 (stat)+/-0. 10 (syst)+/-0.10 (lum) nb. Lepton universality predicts that the ratio of the tau and electron electroweak charged current couplings to the W boson, gWtau/gWe, be unity. We find gWtau/gWe=0.980+/-0.031, in agreement with lepton universality.     

Enzymatic Degradation of (Ligno)cellulose

Glycoside‐degrading enzymes play a dominant role in the biochemical conversion of cellulosic biomass into low‐price biofuels and high‐value‐added chemicals. New insight into protein functions and substrate structures, the kinetics of recognition, and degradation events has resulted in a substantial improvement of our understanding of cellulose degradation.     

Phosphine–Alkene Ligands as Mechanistic Probes in the Pauson–Khand Reaction

An alkyne tetracarbonyl dicobalt complex with a chelated phosphine–alkene ligand, in which the phosphorus atom and the alkene from the ligand are attached to the same cobalt atom has been prepared, isolated, and characterized by X‐ray crystallography. The complex serves as a mechanistic model for an intermediate of the Pauson–Khand (PK) reaction. Although the alkene fragment is located in an equatorial coordination site with an appropriate orientation, and, therefore, should undergo insertion, it failed to give the PK product upon either thermal or N‐methylmorpholine N‐oxide activation. However, a phosphine–alkene complex that contains a terminal alkene readily provided the corresponding PK product. We attribute this change in reactivity to the different ability of each olefin to undergo 1,2‐insertion. These results provide further insights into the factors that govern a crucial step in the PK reaction, the olefin insertion.
