The η-Einstein condition on indefinite S-manifolds

An η-Einstein condition is introduced in the context of indefinite globally framed f-manifolds, and several Schur-type results for indefinite S-manifolds are proved.     

A combinatorial interpretation of the recurrence fn+1 = 6fn − fn−1

Bonin et al. (1993) recalled an open problem related to the recurrence relation verified by NSW numbers. The recurrence relation is the following: f_n+1 = 6f_n − f_n−1, with f₁ = 1 and f₂ = 7, and no combinatorial interpretation seems to be known. In this note, we define a regular language L whose number of words having length n is equal to f_n+1. Then, by using L we give a direct combinatorial proof of the recurrence.     

GIQAR position paper on pathology peer review

The pathology peer review (PR) is an important part of the assessment process of key toxicological results and increases confidence in the quality of histopathology study data. On the other hand, in the last few years, on the basis of findings recorded in the Food and Drug Administration warning letters, a large debate on PR took place and several position papers were issued by either scientific association of pathologists and Quality Assurance (QA) associations. The Guidance on the GLP requirements for Peer Review of Histopathology was issued in May 2010 by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This document gave an opportunity to the Italian Group of Quality Assurance in Research (the Italian acronym for which is GIQAR) to discuss more in depth this matter in an ad hoc Round Table. The decision to comment the above MHRA document in order to issue a GIQAR position paper was based on the lack of guidance regarding pathology PR and on the need for a thorough exchange of views among all involved parties as well as to provide recommendations to QA professionals on this specific issue.     

Amperometric detection of carbohydrates and thiols by using a glassy carbon electrode coated with Co oxide/multi-wall carbon nanotubes catalytic system

A glassy carbon electrode coated with cobalt oxide/multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) system was used for the detection of carbohydrates and thiols. The modification of the glassy carbon electrode increased the anodic current response of these organic compounds and decreased their overvoltage. The amperometric responses were extremely stable with no loss of sensitivity over many days of storage. Such attractive performance characteristics indicate great promise for using this new catalytic system for monitoring in fast and simple way compounds of great interest for food industry, biotechnology and clinical diagnostics.     

Synthesis,characterization and biological analysis of the complex [VO(Hdhp)<Subscript>2</Subscript>] (H<Subscript>2</Subscript>dhp = 2,3-dihydroxypyridine)

A new vanadium (IV) complex with the monoanion of 2,3-dihydroxypyridine (H₂dhp), or 3-hydroxy-2-(1H)-pyridone, was synthesized, characterized by physicochemical techniques and tested biologically. The EPR data for the [VO(Hdhp)₂] complex in DMF are: g _x = 1.9768, g _y = 1.9768 and g _z = 1.9390; A values (10⁻⁴ cm⁻¹): A _x , 59.4; A _y//, 59.4; A _z , 171.0. The νV=O band in the IR spectrum of the complex is at 986 cm⁻¹. The complex is paramagnetic, with μ_eff = 1.65 BM (d¹, spin-only) at 25 °C. The irreversible oxidation process [V(V)/V(IV)] of the [VO(Hdhp)₂] complex, as revealed in a cyclic voltammogram, occurs at 876 mV. The calculated molecular structure of [VO(Hdhp)₂] shows the vanadium(IV) center in a distorted square pyramidal environment, with the oxo ligand in the apical position and the oxygen donor atoms of the Hdhp ligands in the basal positions. The ability of [VO(Hdhp)₂] to mimic insulin, and its toxicity to hepato-biliary functions, were investigated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats and it was concluded that the length of treatment and the amount of [VO(Hdhp)₂] administered were effective in reducing experimental diabetes.     

Interpretation of tearing mode physics from ECE temperature fluctuations associated with magnetic islands and Mirnov signals

The experimental identification of the physical mechanisms behind the rotating magnetic helical modes with low numbers m,n which appear at magnetic surfaces where q = m/n is an elusive task. We discuss here a theoretical principle of a combined analysis of magnetic Mirnov signals and of electron cyclotron emission signals that can shed light on the underlying physics of these perturbations.     

Determination of Theophylline at a Cysteic Acid Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

A glassy carbon electrode modified with electrodeposited cysteic acid is proposed for the determination of theophylline. Estimation of the linear range, calibration function and limit of detection, as well as determination in real samples such as medication tablets were performed.
