A carousel is a dynamical system that describes the movement of an equilateral linkage in which the midpoint of each rod travels parallel to it. They are closely related to the floating body problem. We prove, using the work of Auerbach, that any figure that floats in equilibrium in every position is drawn by a carousel. Of special interest are such figures with rational perimetral density of the floating chords, which are then drawn by carousels. In particular, we prove that for some perimetral densities the only such figure is the circle, as the problem suggests. 相似文献

The purposes of this study were to observe the teaching practices occurring in student teachers' science and mathematics K‐12 classrooms, compare the student teachers' perceptions of their teaching with what was actually occurring in their classrooms, and determine which college faculty members and courses these student teachers felt contributed to the teaching methods they used. Data on each student teacher were gathered via field notes of three classes, an observation protocol completed after each lesson, and an interview. Composites were written for each of the students. The total data set of all composites was examined to see if any patterns generalizable to the whole were evident. We investigate the effects of adding uniformity requirements to concepts in computable structure theory such as computable categoricity (of a structure) and intrinsic computability (of a relation on a computable structure). We consider and compare two different notions of uniformity, previously studied by Kudinov and by Ventsov. We discuss some of their results and establish new ones, while also exploring the connections with the relative computable structure theory of Ash, Knight, Manasse, and Slaman and Chisholm and with previous work of Ash, Knight, and Slaman on uniformity in a general computable structure-theoretical setting. 相似文献

For a graph G and a positive integer m, G(m) is the graph obtained from G by replacing every vertex by an independent set of size m and every edge by m2 edges joining all possible new pairs of ends. If G triangulates a surface, then it is easy to see from Euler's formula that G(m) can, in principle, triangulate a surface. For m prime and at least 7, it has previously been shown that in fact G(m) does triangulate a surface, and in fact does so as a “covering with folds” of the original triangulation. For m = 5, this would be a consequence of Tutte's 5‐Flow Conjecture. This work examines elastic wave scattering around cavities embedded in a continuum with depth-dependent shear modulus and under conditions of plane strain. A restricted case of inhomogeneity is considered, where the Poisson ratio is fixed at 0.25 and where the density profile also varies, but proportionally to the shear modulus. For this specific case, the wave speeds remain macroscopically constant and it becomes possible to recover the exact Green functions by using an algebraic transformation method. These functions are subsequently used as kernels in a standard 2D boundary element formulation defined in the Laplace transform domain. The final step involves an inverse Laplace transformation, whereby the transient behavior of cavities in the aforementioned inhomogeneous continuum can be recovered. Two basic examples are solved, namely the circular cylindrical cavity under sudden internal explosion and under a pressure wave sweep. In the latter case, it is possible to investigate the effect that the angle of wave incidence has on the displacement and stress that develop along the cavity's perimeter, given the fact that the shear modulus is changing along the vertical direction. These examples serve to illustrate the present approach and to reveal some interesting differences that are observed in transient wave scattering phenomena between homogeneous and continuously inhomogeneous models, where the latter models yield a more realistic representation of geological formations. 相似文献

Timoshenko's theory of vibrating beams requires a shear correction factor to correctly take into account the effects of shear deformation for different beam cross-sections. This correction is crucial for a precise determination of the shear modulus from the resonant frequencies. Hutchinson's beam theory is used to derive a new shear correction coefficient for anisotropic materials. A comparison is made with other shear coefficients for anisotropic materials published in the literature. The action of an electron beam on ordered dust structures in glow and low-pressure RF discharges was studied experimentally. The electron beam produces destruction and dynamic displacement of the dust structure. In the center of a dust structure, an electron beam with a low electron energy (tens of eV) at currents up to 1 mA caused structural disordering and “melting” in the region of its action but did not excite external crystal regions. Local action of an electron beam with a high electron energy (25 keV) and a beam current above 10 mA caused deformation of the whole dust structure and shifted it in the horizontal direction so that it was carried away from the RF discharge zone. The effect of dust structure displacements can be used to locally remove particles from a plasma. 相似文献
