Electron transfer induced dissociations of 2- and 4-alkyl cyclohexadienones

Several 2- and 4-alkylcyclohexadienones were prepared and shown to accept electrons to produce ketyl radical anions that dissociated rapidly at room temperature to release carbon-centered radicals and an aromatic phenoxide type anion. In the PET process with benzyl-substituted cyclohexadienones, initiated with triethylamine, the benzyl radicals dimerised or abstracted an H-atom from solvent. In electrochemical reductions, and in reductions with alkali metals in liquid ammonia, the benzyl radicals were further reduced to anions.     

Microwave-accelerated conjugate addition of aldehydes to α,β-unsaturated ketones

Aldehydes undergo smooth conjugate addition to α,β-unsaturated ketones in the presence of 5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3-thiazolium halides and DBU adsorbed onto the surface of basic alumina under microwave irradiation and solvent-free conditions to afford 1,4-diketones in enhanced yields and reduced reaction times compared to conventional methods.     

Uniformity in Computable Structure Theory

We investigate the effects of adding uniformity requirements to concepts in computable structure theory such as computable categoricity (of a structure) and intrinsic computability (of a relation on a computable structure). We consider and compare two different notions of uniformity, previously studied by Kudinov and by Ventsov. We discuss some of their results and establish new ones, while also exploring the connections with the relative computable structure theory of Ash, Knight, Manasse, and Slaman and Chisholm and with previous work of Ash, Knight, and Slaman on uniformity in a general computable structure-theoretical setting.     

A note on compact elements in the lattice of radicals

An example of radical compact ring A whose Dorroh extension A¹ is not radical compact is constructed.     

Error estimates for Hermite interpolation on spheres

In this paper, we prove convergence rates for spherical spline Hermite interpolation on the sphere S^d−1 via an error estimate given in a technical report by Luo and Levesley. The functionals in the Hermite interpolation are either point evaluations of pseudodifferential operators or rotational differential operators, the desirable feature of these operators being that they map polynomials to polynomials. Convergence rates for certain derivatives are given in terms of maximum point separation.     

A monotone iterative scheme for a nonlinear second order equation based on a generalized anti–maximum principle

In this paper, a generalized anti–maximum principle for the second order differential operator with potentials is proved. As an application, we will give a monotone iterative scheme for periodic solutions of nonlinear second order equations. Such a scheme involves the L^p norms of the growth, 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, while the usual one is just the case p = ∞.     

Fold‐2‐covering triangular embeddings

For a graph G and a positive integer m, G_(m) is the graph obtained from G by replacing every vertex by an independent set of size m and every edge by m² edges joining all possible new pairs of ends. If G triangulates a surface, then it is easy to see from Euler's formula that G_(m) can, in principle, triangulate a surface. For m prime and at least 7, it has previously been shown that in fact G_(m) does triangulate a surface, and in fact does so as a “covering with folds” of the original triangulation. For m = 5, this would be a consequence of Tutte's 5‐Flow Conjecture. In this work, we investigate the case m = 2 and describe simple classes of triangulations G for which G₍₂₎ does have a triangulation that covers G “with folds,” as well as providing a simple infinite class of triangulations G of the sphere for which G₍₂₎ does not triangulate any surface. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Parabolic Capacity and Soft Measures for Nonlinear Equations

We first introduce, using a functional approach, the notion of capacity related to the parabolic p-Laplace operator. Then we prove a decomposition theorem for measures (in space and time) that do not charge the sets of null capacity. We apply this result to prove existence and uniqueness of renormalized solutions for nonlinear parabolic initial boundary-value problems with such measures as right-hand side.
