The zeta-potentials of silica, copper, platinum and gold particles have been measured as a function of pH. The isoelectric points were found to be at pH 3.0, 5.8, 3.0 and 3.5, respectively. In the pH range 3.0 to 5.8 copper and silica particles are oppositely charged and accordingly the coating of silica with copper particles could be demonstrated. In the case of gold and platinum the sign of the charge is such that direct adhesion to silica particles cannot be expected and this was also demonstrated in the case of platinum.  相似文献

Ground-state hyperfine splittings in hydrogen and muonium are very well measured. Their difference, after correcting for magnetic moment and reduced mass effects, is due solely to proton structure-the large QED contributions for a pointlike nucleus essentially cancel. The rescaled hyperfine difference depends on the Zemach radius, a fundamental measure of the proton, computed as an integral over a product of electric and magnetic proton form factors. The determination of the Zemach radius, (1.019+/-0.016) fm, from atomic physics tightly constrains fits to accelerator measurements of proton form factors. Conversely, we can use muonium data to extract an experimental value for QED corrections to hydrogenic hyperfine data. There is a significant discrepancy between measurement and theory, in the same direction as a corresponding discrepancy in positronium.  相似文献

We consider the model of a Fermi-Bose mixture with strong hard-core repulsion between particles of the same sort and attraction between particles of different sorts. In this case, in addition to the standard anomalous averages of the type 〈b〉, 〈bb〉, and 〈cc〉, pairing between fermions and bosons of the type 〈bc〉 is possible. This pairing corresponds to creation of composite fermions in the system. At low temperatures and equal densities of fermions and bosons, composite fermions are further paired into quartets. At higher temperatures, trios consisting of composite fermions and elementary bosons are also present in the system. Our investigations are important in connection with the recent observation of weakly bound dimers in magnetic and optical dipole traps at ultralow temperatures and with the observation of collapse of a Fermi gas in an attractive Fermi-Bose mixture of neutral particles.  相似文献

We elaborate on a recently proposed model of the temporal dependence of polarization mode dispersion in long fiber links. We evaluate the probability that a channel of a wavelength-division multiplexed system never incurs an outage, and the range of frequency over which the parameters that characterize the temporal statistics of the differential group delay are correlated.  相似文献

Peptide models have proved important in defining the structural features of the collagen triple-helix. Some models are based on multiple repeats of a given tripeptide unit, while a host-guest design includes an individual tripeptide unit substituted within a constant repeating Pro-Hyp-Gly framework. In the present study, proline, hydroxyproline, and fluoroproline residues are incorporated in X- or Y-positions of a guest triplet in the host-guest peptide design. All host-guest peptides, including Hyp-Pro-Gly, formed stable triple-helices, even though a triple-helix cannot be formed by (Hyp-Pro-Gly)10. The order of stability Pro-Hyp-Gly > Pro-Pro-Gly > Hyp-Pro-Gly remains the same in all models, while the Pro-Flp-Gly is very stabilizing in a repeating context but destabilizing in a host-guest context. The range of thermal stabilities and calorimetric enthalpies is very small among the five host-guest peptides, consistent with the concept that the effect of one Xaa-Yaa-Gly tripeptide unit in the host-guest system would be less than the much larger variations when there are 10 repeating units. However, a simple additive model based on host-guest peptides predicts a greater stability than experimentally observed. The difference in stability contributions of the same tripeptide unit in host-guest versus repeating tripeptide systems illustrates the impact of sequence environment on stability, and factors that play a role include ring puckering as a consequence of electron inductive effects, residual monomer structure, and native state hydration networks.  相似文献

The AdS/CFT correspondence between conformal field theory and string states in an extended space-time has provided new insights into not only hadron spectra, but also their light-front wave functions. We show that there is an exact correspondence between the fifth-dimensional coordinate of anti-de Sitter space z and a specific impact variable ζ which measures the separation of the constituents within the hadron in ordinary space-time. This connection allows one to predict the form of the light-front wave functions of mesons and baryons, the fundamental entities which encode hadron properties and scattering amplitudes. A new relativistic Schr?dinger light-front equation is found which reproduces the results obtained using the fifth-dimensional theory. Since they are complete and orthonormal, the AdS/CFT model wave functions can be used as an initial ansatz for a variational treatment or as a basis for the diagonalization of the light-front QCD Hamiltonian. A number of applications of light-front wave functions are also discussed.  相似文献

We tropicalize the rational map that takes triples of points in the projective plane to the plane of quadrics passing through these points. The image of its tropicalization is contained in the tropicalization of its image. Recent experiments with heavy ions and planned experiments with ultraintense lasers require nonperturbative solutions to quantum field theory for predicting and interpreting the results. To propel this theoretical direction, we solve the nonperturbative problem of an electron in a strong transverse confining potential using Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory. We evaluate both the invariant mass spectra and the anomalous magnetic moment of the lowest state for this two-scale system. The weak external field limit of the anomalous magnetic moment agrees with the result of QED perturbation theory within the anticipated accuracy.  相似文献
