Techniques were developed for high-sensitivity moiré interferometry by reflection, using a real reference grating of 1200 lines/mm (30,000 /in.). Coefficients of thermal expansion of selected graphite-epoxy laminates were determined in the temperature range of 297 K (75°F) to 422 K (300°F). Very good precision was achieved for a wide range of thermal-expansion coefficients, from approximately zero to 27 /K.D.E. The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory has precisely determined the total active (nu(x)) 8B solar neutrino flux without assumptions about the energy dependence of the nu(e) survival probability. The measurements were made with dissolved NaCl in heavy water to enhance the sensitivity and signature for neutral-current interactions. The flux is found to be 5.21 +/- 0.27(stat)+/-0.38(syst) x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1), in agreement with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of these and other solar and reactor neutrino results yields Deltam(2)=7.1(+1.2)(-0.6) x 10(-5) eV(2) and theta=32.5(+2.4)(-2.3) degrees. Maximal mixing is rejected at the equivalent of 5.4 standard deviations.  相似文献

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) and standard behavioral methods were compared by measuring in-air audiograms for an adult female harbor seal (Phoca vitulina). Behavioral audiograms were obtained using two techniques: the method of constant stimuli and the staircase method. Sensitivity was tested from 0.250 to 30 kHz. The seal showed good sensitivity from 6 to 12 kHz [best sensitivity 8.1 dB (re 20 microPa2 x s) RMS at 8 kHz]. The staircase method yielded thresholds that were lower by 10 dB on average than the method of constant stimuli. ABRs were recorded at 2, 4, 8, 16, and 22 kHz and showed a similar best range (8-16 kHz). ABR thresholds averaged 5.7 dB higher than behavioral thresholds at 2, 4, and 8 kHz. ABRs were at least 7 dB lower at 16 kHz, and approximately 3 dB higher at 22 kHz. The better sensitivity of ABRs at higher frequencies could have reflected differences in the seal's behavior during ABR testing and/or bandwidth characteristics of test stimuli. These results agree with comparisons of ABR and behavioral methods performed in other recent studies and indicate that ABR methods represent a good alternative for estimating hearing range and sensitivity in pinnipeds, particularly when time is a critical factor and animals are untrained.  相似文献

The number of distinguishable inherent structures of a liquid is the key component to understanding the thermodynamics of glass formers. In the case of hard potential systems such as hard discs, spheres and ellipsoids, an inherent structure corresponds to a collectively jammed configuration. This work develops a tiling based approach to counting inherent structures that constructs packings by combining sets of elementary locally jammed structures but eliminates those final packings that either, do not tile space, or are not collectively jammed, through the use of tile incompatibility rules. The resulting theory contains a number of geometric quantities, such as the number of growth sites on a tile and the number of tile compatibilities that provide insight into the number of inherent structures in certain limits. We also show that these geometric quantities become quite simple in a system of highly confined hard discs.  相似文献

The effects of acceptor–donor interactions in thienyl substituted benzimidazole-nitronyl nitroxides (TBNN) on the absorption spectroscopy, spin density distribution, magnetic behavior, and crystallographic packing were explored through spectroscopy, computation, and characterization of structure and magnetic properties in the crystalline phase. The electronic spectra of the radicals exhibit a strong broad absorption in the NIR (λmax  1000 nm) that exhibits solvatochromism consistent with charge transfer between the thienyl (donor) and benzonitronyl nitroxide (acceptor) dyads. Computational analysis allowed assignment of the transition as a HOMO–SOMO transition (TD-DFT UB3LYP/6-31G7). The TBNN radicals form highly disordered slipped π-stacks in the solid state that give rise to antiferromagnetic interactions consistent with 1D chain interactions. The magnetic behavior was well-fit to a Bonner–Fisher model to give exchange parameters of J = ?2 to ?10 cm?1 depending on substitution. The weak exchange parameters are attributed to the degree of solid-state disorder, and the observed properties can be rationalized by the effects of substitution on the electronic structure and topology of the radicals.  相似文献

The hearing sensitivities of two short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) were investigated by measuring auditory evoked potentials generated in response to clicks and sinusoidal amplitude modulated (SAM) tones. The first whale tested, an adult female, was a long-time resident at SeaWorld San Diego with a known health history. Click-evoked responses in this animal were similar to those measured in other echolocating odontocetes. Auditory thresholds were comparable to dolphins of similar age determined with similar evoked potential methods. The region of best sensitivity was near 40 kHz and the upper limit of functional hearing was between 80 and 100 kHz. The second whale tested, a juvenile male, was recently stranded and deemed non-releasable. Click-evoked potentials were not detected in this animal and testing with SAM tones suggested severe hearing loss above 10 kHz.  相似文献

This contribution puts forward some recent advances in the rigorous (asymptotic) theory of gravity- (and capillarity-)driven shallow flow of a viscous liquid past a horizontal plate, originating in jet impingement oblique to it. Hence, our concern is twofold: with steady developed flow over the distance from the jet centre to the trailing edge of the plate, referred to as a pronounced hydraulic jump blurred by viscous diffusion; with the predominantly inviscid transcritical limit arising near the edge due to scale reduction given an intrinsic expansive singularity taking place there. In the latter situation envisaged briefly, condensing nonlinear inertial effects, weak time dependence, and (very) weak streamline curvature as the essential ingredients into a distinguished limit demonstrates the generation of a weak (transcritical) hydraulic jump by a plate-mounted obstacle. The paper outlines the results of an investigation to characterize the response of P75/934 graphite/epoxy tubes with a stacking sequence of [15/0/±10/0/−15] s under pure torsion and combined axial/torsion loading. The experimentally observed nonlinear response and path-dependent failure are discussed in terms of material nonlinearities at the ply level and first-ply failure loads with the help of an analytical model. This paper compares the feasibility of applying three stochastic techniques to a linear water quality model. The Monte Carlo, first order analysis, and generation of moment equation techniques are applied to a long term phosphorus model of Lake Washington. The effect of uncertainty of the phosphorus loading term on simulated phosphorus levels is analysed. The simulated concentrations of phosphorus in the water column are very responsive to uncertainty in annual phosphorus loading, but the sediment concentrations are relatively insensitive. All three stochastic techniques produced identical results, but the level of preparatory and computational effort required varies considerably. The Monte Carlo technique requires the most computation time of the three stochastic techniques examined. The first order analysis and generation of moment equation techniques are shown to be precise and efficient methods of stochastic analysis.
