The Fermi doublet V2−V3 + V4 of CH3CN as a probe of molecular interactions

The Fermi doublet V₂?V₃ + V₄ of CH₃CN in basic, inert and acidic solvents has been studied by IR and Raman spectroscopy. The values of W, the Fermi coupling coefficient, obtained from IR spectra varies with the nature of the solvent while W evaluated from Raman data remains constant at 12.5 ± 0.5 cm^?1. The similar effects of Bronsted and Lewis acids on the band frequencies and intensities is evidence that the CN group complexes with acids via the N atom “n” electron pair and not the π bond.     

Simultane Ionen-Chromatographie von Kationen und Anionen mit Komplexonen als Elutionsmittel und selektiver UV-Detektion

Summary The complexones EDTA, DCTA and EGTA were investigated as eluting agents at various pH-values for the simultaneous separation of 9 cations and 6 anions using ion chromatography on a silica gel based anion exchanger (Nucleosil 10-Anion II). 1,2-Diaminocyclohexanetetraacetic acid (DCTA) proved to be the best eluting agent. UV spectrophotometry was used for both direct and indirect detection of the anions and anionic metal complexes and a detailed study was carried out with respect to selectivity of detection. This was facilitated by referring to the UV absorption spectra of the anions and metal complexes involved. By choice of a suitable wavelength between 203 and 270 nm and taking into account pH effects, a number of selective determinations were possible. Examples include Pb and Cu in the presence of excess of Ca and Mg as well as nitrate, nitrite and bromide in a large excess of chloride and sulphate. Some examples of detection limits are (g/l) nitrate 2, Fe(III) 3, Cu 9 and Pb 12 (sample volume 20 l, direct UV-detection). The Chromatographie behaviour of Fe(II) and Fe(III) was studied and discussed. Drinking water was analysed for chloride, nitrate and sulphate as well as Ca and Mg using DCTA in the eluent. Complete analyses can be carried out in less than 15 min.

Carbon-carbon coupling constants - a new guide in the stereochemistry of oximes

A positive contribution of more than 7 Hz to the direct ¹³C-¹³C spin-spin coupling constants induced by the proximity of the nitrogen lone pair in syn-orientation to the coupled nuclei allows an unambiguous configuration assignment of diverse oximes.     

The formation of lactams of N-(2-amino)benzoylamino acids

N-(2-Nitro)benzoylamino acids were prepared by 2-nitrobenzoylation of amino acids via the mixed ethylcarbonic anhydride procedure. They were reduced catalytically to N-(2-amino)benzoylamino acids which underwent cyclization to the corresponding lactams under a variety of conditions. The use of this reaction sequence for stepwise degradation of peptides seems possible.     

Oxidative coupling of malononitrile with formation of 1,1,2,3,3-pentacyanopropene salts

A simple and convenient route for the synthesis of 1,1,2,3,3-pentacyanopropene salts is reported. These salts are formed by interaction of malononitrile with SeO₂ in presence of organic N-containing bases or pyridinium salts.     

Easy α- to β-migration of an enol moiety on a pyrrole ring

Functionalized pyrrolic enols, 2-(2,2-dicyano-1-hydroxyethenyl)-1-methylpyrroles, synthesized from 2-ethenylpyrroles by a nucleophilic SEt-OH exchange, upon heating (75-142 °C) are readily rearranged to their 3-isomers in near to quantitative yield. The inter or intramolecular auto-protonation of a pyrrole ring by the acidic enol hydroxyl to form a mesomeric pyrrolium cation or zwitterion is suggested to be a key step in the rearrangement.     

Chiral induction in self-assembled helicates: CHIRAGEN type ligands with ferrocene bridging units

The aim of this work was the preparation of enantiomerically pure bis(pinene-bipyridine) ligands containing the ferrocenyl moiety. Several such ligands (1-3) were synthesized and completely characterized. These molecules can be diastereoselectively deprotonated at the acidic methylene group of the pinene moiety using a strong and sterically hindered base such as LDA. Subsequent reaction of the formed anion with alkyl halides yield the family of C(2)-symmetric enantiopure compounds (1a-c). Copper(I), silver(I), or zinc(II) complexes with several ligands (C1-C8) were prepared and structurally characterized in the solid state and in solution. Self-assembled helical species are formed in several cases. It became evident that the chiral groups present in the ligand do not completely determined the helical configuration of the assemblages. Diastereoselectivity is thus not complete with this type of ligands, contrary to other, similar ligands studied before.
