Stereoisomerism and complexation behaviour of functionalized p-tert-calix[6]-1,4-2,5-biscrown-4

p-tert-Calix[6]-1,4-2,5-biscrown-4 was subjected to functionalization by benzyl bromide or ethyl bromoacetate. Two pairs of disubstituted calix[6]biscrown stereoisomers were obtained. Their structures had been deduced from ¹H NMR and ESI-MS (electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy). One of the bisethyloxycarbonylmethylated derivatives 3a was further investigated by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Two-phase extraction experiments indicated that bisethyloxycarbonylmethylated derivatives exhibited high Cs⁺/Na⁺ selectivity. By ESI-MS and ¹H NMR experiments it was confirmed that 3a formed 1:1 complex with Cs⁺.

Mechanical and thermal properties of poly-ether ether ketone reinforced with CaCO3

CaCO₃/PEEK (poly-ether ether ketone) composites were prepared on a twin-screw extruder with different mass ratio of CaCO₃/PEEK from 0% to 30%. Four types of particles were used as filler in PEEK matrix. The influence of surface treatment with sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK) of the particles on the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites was studied. The experiments included tensile tests, flexural tests, notched Izod impact tests, TGA, DSC and SEM. The modulus and yield stress of the composites increased with CaCO₃ particles loadings. This increase was attributed to the bonding between the particles and the PEEK matrix, as can be proved by the SEM pictures of tensile fracture surface of the composites. The impact strength of the composites was modified by the SPEEK coated on the CaCO₃ particle surface. DSC experiments showed that the particle content and surface properties influenced the glass transition temperature (T_g) and melting temperature (T_m) of the composites. The T_g increased with the content of fillers while T_m decreased. In this study the fillers treated were found to give better combination properties, which indicated that SPEEK played a constructive role in the CaCO₃/PEEK composites.     

Resonance Rayleigh scattering, frequency doubling scattering and second-order scattering spectra of the heparin-crystal violet system and their analytical application

In pH 6.0-11.2 Britton-Robinson buffer solution, binding of heparin with crystal violet (CV) can result in a significant enhancement of resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) and resonance non-linear scattering, such as frequency doubling scattering (FDS) and second-order scattering (SOS). Their maximum scattering wavelengths, λ_ex/λ_em, appear at 492 nm/492 nm for RRS, 984 nm/492 nm for FDS and 492 nm/984 nm for SOS, respectively. The optimum conditions of the reaction, the influencing factors and the relationship between the three scattering intensities and the concentration of heparin have been investigated. New methods for the determination of trace amounts of heparin based on the RRS, FDS and SOS methods have been developed. The methods exhibit high sensitivities, the detection limit for heparin is 2.9 ng ml⁻¹ for the RRS method, 3.5 ng ml⁻¹ for the FDS method and 3.3 ng ml⁻¹ for the SOS method. The methods have good selectivity and were applied to the determination of heparin in heparin sodium injection samples with satisfactory results.     

Steroidal saponins from rhizomes of Tupistra wattii Hook. f

Chemical examination of the fresh rhizomes of Tupistra wattii HOOK. f. led to the isolation of three new steroidal saponins, wattoside G (1), H (2), and I (3), together with one known steroidal saponin, (25S)-1beta,3beta,4beta-trihydroxyspirotan-5beta-yl-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (4). The structures of 1-3 were established to be (25R)-1beta,2beta,3beta,5beta-tetrahydroxyspirostan-4beta-yl-O-beta-D-xylopyranoside (1), (24S,25S)-24-[(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)oxy]-1beta,2beta,3beta,4beta,5beta,7beta-hexahydroxyspirostan-6-one (2), and (24S,25S)-1beta,3beta-dihydroxy-5beta-spirostan-24-yl-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3) on the basis of detailed analyses of physical, chemical, and spectral data. The isolated compounds were evaluated for cytotoxic activity against the cancer cell line K562 in vitro.     

First principles study on the solvation and structure of C2O4(2-)(H2O)n, n = 6-12

The structures and energies of hydrated oxalate clusters, C2O4(2-)(H2O)n, n = 6-12, are obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and compared to SO4(2-)(H2O)n. Although the evolution of the cluster structure with size is similar to that of SO4(2-)(H2O)n, there are a number of important and distinctive futures in C2O4(2-)(H2O)n, including the separation of the two charges due to the C-C bond in C2O4(2-), the lower symmetry around C2O4(2-), and the torsion along the C-C bond, that affect both the structure and the solvation energy. The solvation dynamics for the isomers of C2O4(2-)(H2O)12 are also examined by DFT based ab initio molecular dynamics.
