After the development of a novel XeCl excimer laser with a nearly diffraction-limited beam and 175 ns pulse length, research was done on different industrial applications of this laser. Hole drilling, one of these applications, was studied extensively. A better understanding of the drilling process is necessary to optimise the drilling efficiency and to control the quality of the holes. A shadowgraphic imaging technique was used for studying the removal of material from the hole and the absorption of the laser beam by this removed material. Images were made at successive times both during and after the laser pulse.In drilling of thin foils, it was shown that the material was ejected mainly after the laser pulse. A comparison of different materials showed that the drilling process should be optimised for each material independently. Furthermore, the plume was found to be not fully transparent for processing materials with a strong absorption line at or near the laser wavelength. The correlation between material and drilling speed suggests improved energy transfer and improved melt ejection for the materials with this absorption. PACS 42.62.Cf; 52.38.Dx; 52.38.Mf  相似文献

Frequency and temperature dependent NMR relaxation measurements were performed on deuteriated benzene, pyrene and triphenylene dissolved in the nematic phase of a discotic liquid crystal. The results show a strong frequency dependence of the spectral densities. Based on the symmetries of the system and the usual model for director fluctuations this frequency dependence should be equal for J1 and J2. From fitting the commonly used model of rotational diffusion and director fluctuations to the data we see that this is not the case for benzene and triphenylene, even though the fits themselves are satisfactory. Values for the elastic constants, effective viscosity and translational diffusion in similar discotic liquid crystals do not account quantitatively for the frequency dependence of benzene. For both pyrene and triphenylene quantitative comparison was impossible due to lack of translational diffusion data. We also find that the so-called cut-off wave-length is of the order of the dimensions of the liquid crystal molecules, just as in ordinary nematics.  相似文献

One of the innovative technological directions for the high-temperature superconductors has been persued by fabricating the heteroepitaxial multilayer structures such as superconductor-semiconductor heterostructures. In the present investigation, metal/superconductor/semiconductor (Ag/Tl-2223/CdSe) hetero-nanostructures have successfully been fabricated using dc electrodeposition technique and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. The measurement of junction capacitance as a function of biasing voltage was used for the estimation of junction built-in-potential (V D) and to study the charge distribution in a heterojunction. The Mott-Schottky plots were measured for each junction in dark and under the photo-irradiation. The effect of laser irradiation on C-V characteristics of hetero-nanostructure has been studied.  相似文献

We study the size of polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules as a function of ionic strength, temperature, and time. A dynamic micromechanical model is developed which successfully describes the experiments. The model includes the polymer-solvent surface tension, an electrostatic force which is strongly ionic strength dependent, and a temperature-dependent mobility parameter. The activation of >50 kT suggests that multiple ion pairs must be broken simultaneously in the process of chain rearrangement. In support of our physical model capsules can repeatedly swell and shrink by varying ionic strength.  相似文献

We study the phase behavior of mixtures of oppositely charged nanoparticles, both theoretically and experimentally. As an experimental model system we consider mixtures of lysozyme and lysozyme that has been chemically modified in such a way that its charge is nearly equal in magnitude but opposite in sign to that of unmodified lysozyme. We observe reversible macroscopic phase separation that is sensitive not only to protein concentration and ionic strength, but also to temperature. We introduce a heterogeneous Poisson-Boltzmann cell model that generally applies to mixtures of oppositely charged nanoparticles. To account for the phase behavior of our experimental model system, in addition to steric and electrostatic interactions, we need to include a temperature-dependent short-ranged interaction between the lysozyme molecules, the exact origin of which is unknown. The strength and temperature dependence of the short-ranged attraction is found to be of the same order of magnitude as that between unmodified lysozyme molecules. The presence of a rather strong short-ranged attraction in our model system precludes the formation of colloidal liquid phases (or complex coacervates) such as those typically found in mixtures of globular protein molecules and oppositely charged polyelectrolytes.  相似文献

Despite the burgeoning interest in the various biological functions and consequent therapeutic potential of the vast number of oligosaccharides found in nature on glycoproteins and cell surfaces, the development of combinatorial carbohydrate chemistry has not progressed as rapidly as expected. The reason for this imbalance is rooted in the difficulty of oligosaccharide assembly and analysis that renders synthesis a rather cumbersome endeavor. Parallel approaches that generate series of analogous compounds rather than real libraries have therefore typically been used. Since generally low affinity is obtained for interactions between carbohydrate receptors and modified oligosaccharides designed as mimetics of natural carbohydrate ligands, glycopeptides have been explored as alternative mimics. Glycopeptides have been proven in many cases to be superior ligands with higher affinity for a receptor than the natural carbohydrate ligand. High-affinity glycopeptide ligands have been found for several types of receptors including the E-, P-, and L-selectins, toxins, glycohydrolases, bacterial adhesins, and the mannose-6-phosphate receptor. Furthermore, the assembly of glycopeptides is considerably more facile than that of oligosaccharides and the process can be adapted to combinatorial synthesis with either glycosylated amino acid building blocks or by direct glycosylation of peptide templates. The application of the split and combine approach using ladder synthesis has allowed the generation of very large numbers of compounds which could be analyzed and screened for binding of receptors on solid phase. This powerful technique can be used generally for the identification and analysis of the complex interaction between the carbohydrates and their receptors.  相似文献

Recent experiments showed significant adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) consisting of polyacrylic acid, even for pH values above the isoelectric point of the protein, when both protein and polyion are negatively charged. To describe these experimental findings theoretically, we have constructed a spherical box model for an annealed brush consisting of a weak polyelectrolyte that includes the adsorption of BSA. At equilibrium the chemical potential of BSA in solution equals that at each location in the brush, while the net force on the polyions (including osmotic, stretching, and excluded volume terms) is zero at each location. Protein adsorption is predicted above the isoelectric point and--in agreement with experimental data--is a strong function of ionic strength and pH. Adsorption of protein in the brush is possible because the pH in the brush is below the isoelectric point and protein reverses its charge from negative to positive when it adsorbs.  相似文献

A selective oxygen biosensor based on bilirubin oxidase (BOx) was developed. The sensor was used for determining oxygen profiles in a membraneless, single‐chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFC), fed with raw wastewater. The linear response of the sensor was optimized by a diffusion layer of silica gel. A computer‐controlled stage was used to obtain accurate and precise measurements. Oxygen concentration in biofilms covering electrodes was measured, showing 3 mg L?1 of O2 in the bulk solution, decreasing to 0 mg L?1 in the cathodic biofilm. The MFC generated power in the range of 0–0.08 mW, associated to the oxygen content.  相似文献

Models published in the two-phase flow literature for the added mass coefficient of a dilute bubbly dispersion are discussed and compared. It is shown that the differences between the models are mainly due to the different ways in which the added mass is defined. Also, approximate expressions for the added mass coefficient of non-dilute bubbly dispersions are given. Finally, the use of the models in an equation for the average motion of the bubbles is briefly discussed.  相似文献
