Determination of trace levels of dinitrophenolic compounds in environmental water samples using hollow fiber supported liquid membrane extraction and high performance liquid chromatography

A hollow fiber supported liquid membrane extraction method for the liquid chromatographic determination of dinitrophenolic compounds at ppt levels has been developed. Different variables affecting the extraction process, such as extraction time, shaking speed, acceptor pH, acceptor buffer concentration, salt content and humic acids have been studied. Enrichment factors up to 7000 times were obtained. Validation of the method included calibration experiments and studies of the linearity of the responses in different matrices. Good linearity was obtained in the environmental matrices evaluated. Detection limits range from 6.0 to 8.0 ng/L, and the relative standard deviations do not exceed 7% in terms of repeatability.     

Atropo-enantioselective total synthesis of knipholone and related antiplasmodial phenylanthraquinones

The "lactone concept" has been efficiently employed for the first atropo-enantioselective synthesis of knipholone and related natural phenylanthraquinones. Besides the regio- and stereoselective construction of the biaryl axis, another important step was the "synthetically late" introduction of the C-acetyl group, either by a Friedel-Crafts type acetylation or by an ortho-selective Fries rearrangement first tested on simplified model systems and subsequently applied to the highly atroposelective preparation of the natural products and of simplified analogs thereof for biotesting. The synthetic availability of these natural biaryls, their precursors, and their unnatural analogs permitted a broader investigation of the antiplasmodial activities of these interesting biaryls.     

The trace problem for vector fields satisfying Hörmander's condition

Trace theorems are proved for non-isotropic Sobolev and -Lipschitz spaces defined by vector fields satisfying H?rmander's bracket condition of order 2. It is shown that the loss of regularity by traces is the same as in the classical case. Received March 17, 1997; in final form April 18, 1998     

An F. and M. Riesz theorem for planar vector fields

We prove that solutions of the homogeneous equation Lu=0, where L is a locally integrable vector field with smooth coefficients in two variables possess the F. and M. Riesz property. That is, if is an open subset of the plane with smooth boundary, satisfiesLu=0 on , has tempered growth at the boundary, and its weak boundary value is a measure , then is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure on the noncharacteristic portion of . Impurity diffusion in a harmonic potential and nonhomogeneous temperature

Classical blockmodel is known as the simplest among models of networks with community structure. The model can be also seen as an extremely simply example of interconnected networks. For this reason, it is surprising that the percolation transition in the classical blockmodel has not been examined so far, although the phenomenon has been studied in a variety of much more complicated models of interconnected and multiplex networks. In this paper we derive the self-consistent equation for the size the global percolation cluster in the classical blockmodel. We also find the condition for percolation threshold which characterizes the emergence of the giant component. We show that the discussed percolation phenomenon may cause unexpected problems in a simple optimization process of the multilevel network construction. Numerical simulations confirm the correctness of our theoretical derivations.     

Epunctanone,a New Benzophenone,and Further Secondary Metabolites from Garcinia epunctata Stapf (Guttiferae)

A new polyprenylated benzophenone, named epunctanone ( 1 ), was isolated from the stem bark of Garcinia epunctata Stapf , together with eight known compounds, 7‐epiisogarcinol ( 2 ), 2,6‐dimethoxy‐p‐benzoquinone ( 3 ), friedelin ( 4 ), lupeol ( 5 ), 16β‐hydroxylupeol ( 6 ), betulin ( 7 ), stigmasterol ( 8 ), and rheediaxanthone A ( 9 ). The structure of epunctanone ( 1 ) was established by detailed analysis of its spectroscopic data, especially 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR, and HR‐MS data. All these compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial and anti‐protozoan activities. They were also assayed to determine if any of the compounds were nonpeptide agonist ligands for nematodal G‐protein‐coupled receptors, which would be an indication of potential antinematodal activity. Among the isolated compounds, 7‐epiisogarcinol ( 2 ) was the most active against Candida albicans.     

Liouville's theorem and the maximum modulus principle for a system of complex vector fields

This work is concerned with Liouville's theorem and the maximum principle for the homogeneous solutions of systems of complex vector fields . Necessary and sufficient conditions are provedfor tube structures to have the Liouville property. Maximum principles are proved for a general system of complex vector fields which are integrable. As an application, in the case of vector fields, we get new characterizations of the local solvability property (P) of Nirenberg andTreves. Another application concerns a solvability condition (P_n-1) introduced by P.Cordaro and J. Hounie in differential complexes associated to locally integrable structures.     

THE CHEMISTRY OF 3-AMINOTHIOACRYLAMIDES; PART II: 3-AMINOTHIOACRYLAMIDES AS USEFUL SYNTHONS IN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS

Abstract

3-Aminothioacrylamides are a class of organic sulfur containing compounds that are easily available and exhibit polyfunctional reaction behaviour. They can be used widely in the synthesis of a variety of heterocyclic and open chain compounds. The synthetic utility of 3-aminothioacrylamides can be further extended if additional functionalities are incorporated.     

A similarity principle for complex vector fields and applications

This paper establishes a similarity principle for a class of non-elliptic, smooth complex vector fields in the plane. This principle is used to prove a uniqueness result for a nonlinear Cauchy problem.
