Real-time PCR analysis of the apoptosis related genes in ATRA treated APL t(15;17) patients

All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) treatment of the acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) have subsequently resulted in cell apoptosis, but the molecular mechanism of this effect remains elusive. In order to understand a possible involvement of genes regulating apoptotic signal pathways, expression levels of bcl2, bax, dapk1, myc, bad, wt1, and mcl genes were analyzed during ATRA treatment in five APL patients with t (15;17) using Real- time PCR (LightCycler). Two samples from each patient were compared to each other: primary diagnostic sample and a sample taken at remission. Effect of the ATRA treatment was demonstrated by the concomitant induction of cd14 and il1beta genes in four patients. Also other apoptosis related genes were found down-regulated in general but especially the down regulated levels of wt1 and bax attract attention. Result suggested that ATRA dependent apoptosis of APL was under the control of both internal and external pathways without relationships to the amount of the blast populations. Ratio of bcl2 to bax may be more important for this regulation than the ratio of bcl2 to bad. Either bcl2 family or less known apoptosis related genes as wt1 will still be required to further studies in this setting.

A CEMS study of ac-axis oriented thin film of YBa2(Cu0.97 57Fe0.03)3O7

⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectra of a fullyc-axis oriented epitaxial thin film of YBa₂(Cu_0.97 ⁵⁷Fe_0.03)₃O₇, recorded by CEMS, are reported. Spectra taken at different angles between the normal of the film (i.e. thec-axis) and the gamma ray direction show that for two of the three observed quadrupole doublets the main component of the EFG lies in thea?b-plane, for the third doublet it is parallel to thec-axis. The EFG of all three doublets has approximately axial symmetry.     

Evidence for a change of slope in large-t elastic proton-proton scattering at s=53 GeV

New experimental results are presented on proton-proton elastic scattering in the range of momentum transfer 4 GeV² < ?t < 10 GeV² at the centre-of-mass energy of √s = 53 GeV. The data have been obtained using the Split-Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. We observe another change of slope of the differential cross section near ?t=6.5 GeV².     

Effects of tributyltin(IV) chloride on fertilization of Styela plicata (Ascidiacea: Tunicata): II. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies

The morphological aspects of Styela plicata fertilization after treatment with tributyltin(IV) chloride are described by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy investigations. Alterations have been shown both on female and male gametes; spermatozoa, all the egg envelopes and the mitochondria of the egg cortical cytoplasm are modified in relation to incubation time. As a consequence, the damage to gametes blocks sperm–egg interaction and fertilization does not occur. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Spectroscopic investigation of chalcone-analogous ferrocenes ortho-substituted in the aromatic ring II. Ferrocenyl---CO---CH=CH---aryl-type compounds

Chalcone-analogous ferrocenes of the type Fc---CO---CH=CH---Ar, ortho-substituted in the aromatic ring were prepared. Their conformations and electron distributions were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, IR, ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. The spectroscopic properties measured for this series were compared with those of para-subsituted analogues and with data for structural isomers synthesized and studied earlier and having the aryl and ferrocenyl groups bonded to the enone moiety in reversed positions (Fc---CH=CH---CO---Ar). In contrast with the isomers investigated earlier, the new series are coplanar and the S-cis → S-trans conformational equilibria are shifted in favour of the former.     

New kinds of superconductivity and superfluidity

Formation of self-organized macroscopic and periodic structures in a physical system of interacting fermions are derived from first principles. The system of structureless and chargeless fermions with magnetic moments can have four different phases. Two of these phases exhibit the totally unique phenomena typical for superconductivity and superfluidity as well as various kinds of structural singularities such as disgyrations in the superfluid ³He.
