During heavy-ion operation in several particle accelerators worldwide, dynamic pressure rises of orders of magnitude were triggered by lost beam ions that bombarded the vacuum chamber walls. This ion-induced molecular desorption, observed at CERN, GSI, and BNL, can seriously limit the ion beam lifetime and intensity of the accelerator. From dedicated test stand experiments we have discovered that heavy-ion-induced gas desorption scales with the electronic energy loss (dE_{e}/dx) of the ions slowing down in matter; but it varies only little with the ion impact angle, unlike electronic sputtering.  相似文献

Given an initial quantum state |psi(I)> and a final quantum state |psi(F)>, there exist Hamiltonians H under which |psi(I)> evolves into |psi(F)>. Consider the following quantum brachistochrone problem: subject to the constraint that the difference between the largest and smallest eigenvalues of H is held fixed, which H achieves this transformation in the least time tau? For Hermitian Hamiltonians tau has a nonzero lower bound. However, among non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonians satisfying the same energy constraint, tau can be made arbitrarily small without violating the time-energy uncertainty principle. This is because for such Hamiltonians the path from |psi(I)> to |psi(F)> can be made short. The mechanism described here is similar to that in general relativity in which the distance between two space-time points can be made small if they are connected by a wormhole. This result may have applications in quantum computing.  相似文献

The structural effect caused by the addition of up to 16% (w/w) of the hydrochloride salt of delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA, HOOC-CH2-CH2-CO-CH2-NH2HCl) or its methyl ester (m-ALA) to the sponge phase formed of monoolein/water/propylene glycol was investigated by means of crossed polarizers, small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD) and nuclear magnetic resonance diffusometry (NMRD). Inspection with crossed polarizers revealed that additions of 4-16% (w/w) m-ALA transformed the isotropic bicontinuous sponge phase partly (4-10%) or completely (13 and 16%) into an anisotropic lamellar phase, indicating that m-ALA has a flattening effect on the bilayer curvature. The addition of 16% (w/w) ALA did not show any effect on the sponge phase. By addition of water to the anisotropic m-ALA samples, isotropic liquids were re-formed. The SAXD data for the isotropic liquids showed a diffuse Bragg peak and the NMRD self-diffusion coefficients for the drug (m-ALA) and the components of the original sponge phase (monoolein, water and propylene glycol) were shown to be essentially constant for 0-16% (w/w) added m-ALA. These results confirmed the hypothesis that the re-formed isotropic phases were indeed sponge phases. Water, for example, showed a diffusion coefficient of 3.1-3.9x10(-10)m(2)s(-1) in the sponge phase, compared to 5.3-5.7 x 10(-10)m2s(-1) in relevant water/propylene glycol solutions or 2.3 x 10(-9)m2s(-1) in pure water. The reduction can be explained as a consequence of the microstructure (congruent monoolein bilayer) of the sponge phase and of the viscosity effect caused by propylene glycol and m-ALA.  相似文献

Acoustic devices were employed to characterize variations in the mechanical properties (density and viscoelasticity) of liposomes composed of 1-oleoyl-2-palmitoyl- sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) and cholesterol. Liposome properties were modified in three ways. In some experiments, the POPC/cholesterol ratio was varied prior to deposition on the device surface. Alternatively, the ratio was changed in situ via either insertion of cholesterol or removal of cholesterol with beta-cyclodextrin. This was done for liposomes adsorbed directly on the device surface and for liposomes attached via a biotin-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) linker. The acoustic measurements make use of two simultaneous time-resolved signals: one signal is related to the velocity of the acoustic wave, while the second is related to dissipation of acoustic energy. Together, they provide information not only about the mass (or density) of the probed medium but also about its viscoelastic properties. The cholesterol-induced increase in the surface density of the lipid bilayer was indeed observed in the acoustic data, but the resulting change in signal was larger than expected from the change in surface density. In addition, increasing the bilayer resistance to stretching was found to lead to a greater dissipation of the acoustic energy. The acoustic response is assessed in terms of the possible distortions of the liposomes and the known effects of cholesterol on the mechanical properties of the lipid bilayer that encloses the aqueous core of the liposome. To aid the interpretation of the acoustic response, it is discussed how the above changes in the lipid bilayer will affect the effective viscoelastic properties of the entire liposome/solvent film on the scale of the acoustic wavelength. It was found that the acoustic device is very sensitive to the mechanical properties of lipid vesicles; the response of the acoustic device is explained, and the basic underlying mechanisms of interaction are identified.  相似文献

Liquid‐phase processing is a key prerequisite for the cost‐efficient fabrication of organic electronic devices. We report an approach for light‐induced modulation of the solubility of π‐conjugated polymers (polyfluorene) with side chains functionalized with hydroxycinnamic acid. Irradiation with light cleaves the solubilizing side chains and renders the thin films of the polyfluorene insoluble. In a proof of concept device, polyfluorenes were applied as emissive layers in OLEDs. Photoirradiation of the emission layer leads to an increase in OLED performance combined with a modulation of the solubility of the thin film. These results offer the possibility for further development in terms of manipulating the solubility and emissive parameters of an important class of functional materials.  相似文献

The thermal conversion of lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) into maghemite (γ-Fe2O3)and hematite (α-Fe2O3) has been studied by dynamic (DSC) and static heating experiments. Dynamic heating defines two main regions: conversion of lepidocrocite to maghemite (endothermal signal peaking at 255°C) and conversion of maghemite to hematite (exothermal signal peaking at 450°C). In addition, an exotherm following the lepidocrocite to maghemite endotherm is observed. The maghemite phase appears as porous aggregates of nanocrystals characterized by an extensive spin-canting. We suggest that the additional exotherm is associated with structural changes and a decreasing extent of spin-canting in the maghemite phase. A RF-superimposed dc-magnetron sputter process for coating color filter materials with transparent and conducting ITO films was investigated. In this process, the sputtering cathode is excited simultaneously by dc- and RF-power (at 13.56 MHz). This work summarises the measured properties of the gas discharge. Some basic data of the deposited ITO films are given, also. The dependence of the RF portion of the total sputtering power on the discharge voltage has been monitored for different values of total power and process pressure. The ion energy distribution function of the positively charged ions approaching the substrate surface has been measured using a retarding field plasma analyser probe. It was shown that the mean energy of the ions increases with increasing RF portion of the total power. The electron temperature in the body region of the gas discharge has been derived from measurements of the optical emission of the excited species. We study the interaction between a scalar quantum field $\hat \phi (x)$, and many different boundary configurations constructed from (parallel and orthogonal) thin planar surfaces on which $\hat \phi (x)$ is constrained to vanish, or to satisfy Neumann conditions. For most of these boundaries the Casimir problem has not previously been investigated. We calculate the canonical and improved vacuum stress tensors $ \langle \hat T_{\mu \nu } (x)\rangle\$ and $ \langle \Theta _{\mu \nu (x)} \rangle\$ of $\hat \phi (x)$; for each example. From these we obtain the local Casimir forces on all boundary planes. For massless fields, both vacuum stress tensors yield identical attractive local Casimir forces in all Dirichlet examples considered. This desirable outcome is not a priori obvious, given the quite different features of $ \langle \hat T_{\mu \nu } (x)\rangle\$ and $ \langle \Theta _{\mu \nu (x)} \rangle\$. For Neumann conditions. $ \langle \hat T_{\mu \nu } (x)\rangle\$ and $ \langle \Theta _{\mu \nu (x)} \rangle\$ lead to attractive Casimir stresses which are not always the same. We also consider Dirichlet and Neumann boundaries immersed in a common scalar quantum field, and find that these repel. The extensive catalogue of worked examples presented here belongs to a large class of completely solvable Casimir problems. Casimir forces previously unknown are predicted, among them ones which might be measurable.  相似文献
