Rank,covering number and a simple spectrum

For a dynamical system (X, B, T, μ) we investigate the connections between metric invariants, the rankr(T) and the covering numberF ^*(T) and a spectral property for having a simple spectrum. Given a positive integerr≥2, a real numberb, 0<b<1 such thatr·b≥1, we construct examples of systems withr(T)=r, F ^*(T)=b and having a simple spectrum.     

Optimal stopping problems by two or more decision makers: a survey

A review of the optimal stopping problem with more than a single decision maker (DM) is presented in this paper. We classify the existing literature according to the arrival of the offers, the utility of the DMs, the length of the sequence of offers, the nature of the game and the number of offers to be selected. We enumerate various definitions for this problem and describe some dynamic approaches. U(2, 2) Symmetry as a Common Basis for Quantum Theory and Geometrodynamics

We formulated some criticisms of the Diracequation and its Clifford-algebraic philosophy; inparticular, we show that, within a general-relativisticcontext, they seem to contain hidden action-at-distance concepts. We suggest a new model based on thefour-component Klein-Gordon equation locally invariantunder the U(2,2) gauge group. The usual Dirac equationis then obtained as a certain approximation. The geometrodynamical sector shows reasonablecorrespondence with general relativity.     

Relevance of Reflection in Static and Dynamic Light Scattering Experiments

Using a monodisperse PMMA dispersion, it was shown that light reflection at the sample cuvette walls may greatly influence the results of both static (SLS) and dynamic (DLS) light scattering experiments. Considering SLS, this reflection phenomenon mostly causes an overestimation of the scattered intensity at high scattering angles, which may give rise to the emergence of an additional, artificial peak in the lower region of the particle size distribution. On the other hand, the influcence of reflection on DLS measurements was shown to be particularly important in the upper region of the particle size distribution. The experimentally observed phenomena were explained from the basic principles of both particle sizing methods. Finally, it was shown that the disturbing effect of reflection could be avoided by modifying either the hardware or the software of the static and dynamic light scattering technique.     

Monstrous Branes

 We study D-branes in the bosonic closed string theory whose automorphism group is the Bimonster group (the wreath product of the Monster simple group with ℤ₂). We give a complete classification of D-branes preserving the chiral subalgebra of Monster invariants and show that they transform in a representation of the Bimonster. Our results apply more generally to self-dual conformal field theories which admit the action of a compact Lie group on both the left- and right-moving sectors. Nonlinear second-order equations with functional implicit impulses and nonlinear functional boundary conditions

In this paper we deal with nonlinear second-order boundary value problems with impulses. The impulsive functions depend implicitly on the different considered variables and the boundary value conditions are nonlinear. In both cases functional dependence on the solution is allowed. The existence results follow from the existence of a pair of well-ordered lower and upper solutions.     

On Donaldson’s flow of surfaces in a hyperkähler four-manifold

We prove some basic properties of Donaldson’s flow of surfaces in a hyperkähler 4-manifold. When the initial submanifold is symplectic with respect to one Kähler form and Lagrangian with respect to another, we show that certain kinds of singularities cannot form, and we prove a convergence result under a condition related to one considered by M.-T. Wang for the mean curvature flow.     

An explosion point space without the fixed point property

In 1988 A. Gutek proved that there exist one-point connectifications of hereditarily disconnected spaces that do not have the fixed point property. We improve on this result by constructing a one-point connectification of a totally disconnected space without the fixed point property.
