Investigations into beam monitors at the AEg ̄ IS experiment

Detailed diagnostic of antiproton beams at low energies is required for essentially all experiments at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD), but will be particularly important for the future Extra Low ENergy Antiproton ring (ELENA) and its keV beam lines to the different experiments. Many monitors have been successfully developed and operated at the AD, but in particular beam profile monitoring remains a challenge. A dedicated beam instrumentation and detector test stand has recently been setup at the AE \(\bar {g}\) IS experiment (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy). Located behind the actual experiment, it allows for parasitic use of the antiproton beam at different energies for testing and calibration. With the aim to explore and validate different candidate technologies for future low energy beam lines, as well as the downstream antihydrogen detector in AE \(\bar {g}\) IS, measurements have been carried out using Silicon strip and pixel detectors, a purpose-built secondary emission monitor and emulsions. Here, results from measurements and characterization of the different detector types with regard to their future use at the AD complex are presented.     

Suppression of superconductivity in granular metals

We investigate the suppression of the superconducting transition temperature due to Coulomb repulsion in granular metallic systems at large tunneling conductance between the grains, g(T)>1. We find the correction to the superconducting transition temperature for 3D granular samples and films. We demonstrate that, depending on the parameters of superconducting grains, the corresponding granular samples can be divided into two groups: (i). the granular samples that belong to the first group may have only insulating or superconducting states at zero temperature depending on the bare intergranular tunneling conductance g(T), while (ii). the granular samples that belong to the second group in addition have an intermediate metallic phase where superconductivity is suppressed while the effects of the Coulomb blockade are not yet strong.     

Existence of Two Different Isotropic Phases as a Reason for Bistable Phase Behavior of an LC Side‐Chain Polymethacrylate

An isotropic melt of a chiral side‐chain polymethacrylate was studied by electric birefringence technique. A phase transition between two different isotropic phases was detected by Kerr effect and confirmed by WAXS measurements. The obtained experimental data can explain the previously reported bistable phase behavior of the polymer, as conventional Sm A phase is formed in slow cooling whereas a TGB‐like, optically isotropic mesophase in fast cooling.

Electron transport in nanogranular ferromagnets

We study electronic transport properties of ferromagnetic nanoparticle arrays and nanodomain materials near the Curie temperature in the limit of weak coupling between the grains. We calculate the conductivity in the Ohmic and non-Ohmic regimes and estimate the magnetoresistance jump in the resistivity at the transition temperature. The results are applicable for many emerging materials, including artificially self-assembled nanoparticle arrays and a certain class of manganites, where localization effects within the clusters can be neglected.

A chemical placebo: NaCl as an effective, cheapest, non-acidic and greener catalyst for Biginelli-type 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones (-thiones) synthesis

Despite prior reports of several really effective catalytic and non-catalytic approaches towards Biginelli’s 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones, an overwhelming number of new catalysts for the Biginelli reaction have been recently published. Most of the catalysts are somewhat exotic, expensive, harmful and even uneffective in the absence of acidic additives. Herein we reduce the “yet-another-one-catalyst” idea to absurdity by proposing NaCl promotes the reaction that actually requires no catalyst, neither rare nor expensive.     

Measurement of the relative probability of φ →ηγ decay in the η → π +π−π0 channel

The relative decay probability B(φ → ηγ) = (1.259 ± 0.030 ± 0.059)% in the decay channel η → π⁺π^?π⁰ has been measured in an experiment using a spherical neutral detector in the VEPP-2M electron-positron storage ring. The result agrees with the tabulated value and with measurements of this probability using the spherical neutral detector in other η-meson decay channels.
