Experiments with longitudinally polarized electrons in a storage ring using a siberian snake

We report on first measurements with polarized electrons stored in a medium-energy ring and with a polarized internal target. Polarized electrons were injected at 442 MeV (653 MeV), and a partial (full) Siberian snake was employed to preserve the polarization. Longitudinal polarization at the interaction point and polarization lifetime of the stored electrons were determined with laser backscattering. Spin observables were measured for electrodisintegration of polarized 3He, with simultaneous detection of scattered electrons, protons, neutrons, deuterons, and 3He nuclei, over a large phase space.     

Breakdown of K selection in 178Hf

Coulomb activation of the four quasiparticle Kpi=16+ 178Hf isomer (t1/2=31 y) has led to the measurement of a set of Elamda matrix elements coupling the isomer band to the ground band. The present data combined with earlier 178 Hf Coulomb excitation data have probed the components in the wave functions and revealed the onset and saturation of K mixing in low-K bands, whereas the mixing is negligible in the high-K bands. The implications can be applied to other quadrupole-deformed nuclei.     

High spin structures of 122Xe

High — spin states in ¹²²Xe have been investigated by γ ? γ coincidence measurements using the EUROGAM array. The reaction ⁹⁶Zr(³⁰Si,4n)¹²²Xe at a beam energy of 135 MeV was used to populate states of ¹²²Xe. The level scheme has been extended up to ～ 13.5 MeV and also enriched as compared to previous studies. New structures of competing dipole to quadrupole transitions have been observed. Experimental B(M1)/B(E2) ratios have been extracted for these structures and compared with theoretical estimates. They have also been compared with similar structures in Xe, Ba and Ce nuclei.     

High spin structures in194Hg

High spin states in the isotope¹⁹⁴Hg were populated using the¹⁵⁰Nd (⁴⁸Ca,4n) reaction at a beam energy of 213 MeV. The analysis ofγ-γ coincidences has revealed two new structures at excitation energies above 6 MeV and at moderate spin. The two structures are a manifestation of the deviation of nucleus from the collective rotation which dominates its lower excitation behaviour. A comparison with similar structures in the neighbouring Hg isotopes is also attempted.     

Gamma-ray feeding and decay of superdeformed states

We report on four recent results concerning the population and the decay of superdeformed states, namely the structure of excited superdeformed states in ¹⁹⁴Hg, the search for fine structure of the last superdeformed transitions in ¹⁹⁴Pb, the primary decay-out strength analysis in ¹⁹⁴Hg and, as a consequence of this, the possibility of using the decay-out as a tool to study order-to-chaos properties of normally deformed states.Received: 3 December 2002, Published online: 17 February 2004PACS: 21.10.Re Collective levels - 23.20.Lv transitions and level energies - 24.60.-k Statistical theory and fluctuations - 24.60.Lz Chaos in nuclear systems - 27.80. + w F. Crossing of shears bands in (197)Pb: B(M1) values and semiclassical description

Subpicosecond lifetimes of states in shears band 1 in (197)Pb were measured by means of the recoil distance method employing Gammasphere and the New Yale Plunger Device. The extracted reduced matrix elements, B(M1), show a clear sensitivity to the crossing of different shears configurations reflecting the closing and reopening of the shears blades. The energies and B(M1) values in the band crossing region are successfully described in the framework of the semiclassical model of the shears bands. The relevance of core rotation contributions are shown. The results point to the existence of shears states with an angular momentum coupling angle larger than 90 degrees.     

Superdeformed bands in194Tl

Two superdeformed (SD) bands have been found in¹⁹⁴Tl using the reactions¹⁷⁶Yb(²³Na,5n) and¹⁸¹Ta(¹⁸O,5n). The mass assignments were made from excitation function data. These are the first SD bands found in the mass-190 region that are not in Hg nuclei. The energies of many of the transitions of one of these new SD bands are similar in energy to those in the SD band of¹⁹²Hg.     

First observation of a superdeformed nucleus produced in an α xn reaction channel

Excited states in the neutron deficient ¹⁴⁵ Dy nucleus have been identified by means of the reaction ¹¹²Sn(³⁵ Cl,pn) at 159 MeV. The level scheme above the 11/2 ^? state and up to spin I～37/2 was obtained using γ-ray spectroscopy methods. The level structure is discussed in terms of the coupling of a h _11/2 neutron hole with the N=80 core excitations.
