Esters of alternating copolymers of maleic or 2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride with alkyl vinyl ethers

Maleic anhydride or 2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride was copolymerized with a number of alkyl vinyl ethers, with AIBN as the initiator. The comonomers were always alternating and were obtained in yields ranging from 15 to 99%. The acid anhydride group in both series of copolymers was converted to the corresponding methyl esters in a two-step reaction. The structure of these polymers was established by elemental analysis and by infrared, ¹H-and ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy. Addtional characterization of these copolymers were carried out by viscosity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry for the determination of glass transition temperatures, and thermal degradation for the determination of the thermal stability of the copolymers.     

Baryon antibaryon production in the central region at 85 GeV/c

In a search for glueballs and exotic states decaying into baryons and antibaryons we have investigated the production of baryon antibaryon pairs produced centrally in the reactions π⁺/pp → π⁺/p(X ⁰)p at 85 GeV/c. In particular, channels whereX ⁰ goes to \(p\bar p,p\bar p\pi ^ + \pi ^ - ,p\bar p2\pi ^ + 2\pi ^ - \) and \(\Lambda \bar \Lambda \) have been observed. No significant new structure is observed in the mass spectra.     

The collection of diffuse light onto an extended absorber

If light comes from a fixed direction and is to be collected onto an absorbing body which is approximately a point or a straight line, it is well known that a mirror of parabolic profile serves the purpose efficiently. If the light is diffuse, or its direction of incidence variable, or if the absorber is not approximately a point or a straight line, the parabola is less useful. This paper describes various particular collecting problems of this more general sort, together with efficient solutions for them, mainly by means of mirrors. The subject represents a corner of geometric optics little explored until recently, in which the notion of image formation scarcely appears. A unifying principle is the invariance of the Lagrange-Helmholtz invariant, which is related to Liouville's theorem of Hamiltonian mechanics, and there is a unifying method of construction of the mirror profiles by means of string.     

Azimuthal anisotropy of photon and charged parti cle emissionin 208Pb + 208Pb collisions at 158 $\ cdot A$ GeV/ c

The azimuthal distributions of photons and charged particles with respect to the event plane are investigated as a function of centrality in ²⁰⁸Pb + ²⁰⁸Pb collisions at 158 GeV/c in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The anisotropy of the azimuthal distributions is characterized using a Fourier analysis. For both the photon and charged particle distributions the first two Fourier coefficients are observed to decrease with increasing centrality. The observed anisotropies of the photon distributions compare well with the expectations from the charged particle measurements for all centralities.Received: 22 May 2004, Revised: 14 April 2005, Published online: 4 May 2005PACS: 25.75.Dw     

Dark energy reflections in the redshift-space quadrupole

We show that the redshift-space quadrupole will be a powerful tool for constraining dark energy even if the baryon oscillations are missing from the monopole power spectrum and bias is scale and time dependent. We calculate the accuracy with which next-generation galaxy surveys such as KAOS will measure the quadrupole power spectrum, which gives the leading anisotropies in the power spectrum in redshift space due to linear velocity, and the so-called "Finger of God" and Alcock-Paczynski effects. Combining the monopole and quadrupole power spectra, in the complete absence of baryon oscillations (Omegab=0), leads to a roughly 500% improvement in constraints on dark energy compared with those from the monopole spectrum alone.     

Dilepton and trilepton production by antineutrinos and neutrinos in neon

A sample of over 25,000 fully measured neutrino and antineutrino charged current interactions in BEBC includes 192 dilepton candidates. The prompt signal after subtraction of background is 41 ±7µ⁺ e ^-, 35±7µ⁺µ^- events from \(\bar v\) interactions, and 32±7µ^-µ⁺ events from ν interactions. There are 2 trileptons, µ^-µ^- e ⁺ and µ^-µ^-µ⁺. Results are compared with other experimental data and with the standard model. Limits to prompt like sign µ⁺ e ⁺, µ⁺µ⁺ and µ^-µ^- signals are given and compared with other experiments and with theoretical calculations.     

Morphology and crystallization kinetics of dilute binary blends of two monodisperse n‐alkanes with a length ratio of two

The crystallization kinetics and morphologies of dilute binary blends of the monodisperse alkane n‐C₁₂₂H₂₄₆ in n‐C₂₄₆H₄₉₄ and vice versa have been investigated. With a molecular length ratio close to two, this pair of n‐alkanes does not produce permanent cilia when once‐folded C₂₄₆H₄₉₄ molecules cocrystallize with extended chains of C₁₂₂H₂₄₆. In this condition, the supplementary splaying of adjacent dominant lamellae and the consequently more spherulitic textures, which are present in previous blends for which a longer guest molecule gives permanent cilia, are absent, although other features of blend crystallization remain. Specifically, the isothermal radial growth rate is constant for cocrystallizing blends, although less than for their pure hosts, but becomes nonlinear with cellulation when C₁₂₂H₂₄₆ forms a segregated population within extended‐chain C₂₄₆H₄₉₄. Increased nucleation in the blends give smaller scale textures than for the host materials, but the presence of a second component reduces splaying and thereby disfavors spherulitic growth. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
