Impact of Turbulent Flow and Mean Mixture Fraction Results on Mixing Model Behavior in Transported Scalar PDF Simulations of Turbulent Non-premixed Bluff Body Flames

Numerical simulation results are presented for three turbulent jet diffusion flames, stabilized behind a bluff body (Sydney Flames HM1-3). Interaction between turbulence and combustion is modeled with the transported joint-scalar PDF approach. The focus of the study is on the impact of the quality of simulation results in physical space on the behavior of two micro-mixing models in composition space: the Euclidean Minimum Spanning Tree (‘EMST’) model and the modified Curl coalescence dispersion (‘CD’) model. Profiles of conditional means and variances of thermo-chemical quantities, conditioned on the mixture fraction, are discussed in the recirculation region and in the neck zone behind. The impact of the flow and mixing fields in physical space on the mixing model behavior in composition space is strong for the CD model and increases as the turbulence – chemistry interaction becomes stronger. The EMST conditional profiles, on the contrary, are hardly affected.     

CFB cyclones at high temperature: Operational results and design assessment

Pressure drop and cut size measurements are reported for a full scale cyclone operating within a 58 MWth CFB-combustor unit at 775℃.The paper reviews the vast number of equations to calculate the pressure drop and separation efficiency of cyclones, generally for operation at ambient temperature and at low Cs[0.5]. None of the literature correlations predicts the pressure drop with a fair accuracy within the range of experimental operating conditions. The cut size d50 can be estimated using direct empirical methods or using the Stokes number, Stk50. Both methods were used to compare measured and predicted values of d50. With the exception of Muschelknautz and Krambrock, none of the equations made accurate predictions.Finally, an alternative method to determine the friction factor of the pressure drop equation (Euler number, Eu) and of the cut size is proposed. The Eu number is determined from the geometry of common cyclones, and the derived value of Stk50 defines more accurate cut sizes. The remaining discrepancy of less than 5%, when compared with the measured values, is tentatively explained in terms of a reduced cyclone diameter due to the solids layer formed near its wall. Further measurements, mostly using positron emission particle tracking, elucidate the particle motion in the cyclone and both tracking results and the influence of the particle movement on Eu and Stk50 will be discussed in a follow-up paper.     

Generalized criterion of the long-term strength of viscoelastic materials

A long-term strength condition of the same type as the Il'yushin [2] or Moskvitin [1] nonlinear criterion is proposed. A method is suggested for determining the stress and time functions forming part of the proposed criterion from the long-term strength diagrams and from the data of pulsed or stepped loading tests. It is shown, on the basis of the experimental data, that the proposed criterion, which in a particular case is identical with the Moskovitin criterion, describes the experimental results better than the Bailey criterion.     

New chiral catalysts: synthesis and fragmentation pattern of C9-o-silanized cinchonidines

Summary We synthesized C9-O-silyl ethers of cinchonidine and dihydrocinchonidine (1-8), seven of which have not been known before. The structures of the compounds were verified by ESI-ion-trap MS and ¹H-NMR. Fragmentation of silyl ethers containing Si-phenyl bonds was studied for the first time. The compounds obtained will be utilized as chiral catalysts of certain asymmetric syntheses.</o:p>     

Spectral Gap for Stable Process on Convex Planar Double Symmetric Domains

We study the semigroup of the symmetric α-stable process in bounded domains in R ². We obtain a variational formula for the spectral gap, i.e. the difference between two first eigenvalues of the generator of this semigroup. This variational formula allows us to obtain lower bound estimates of the spectral gap for convex planar domains which are symmetric with respect to both coordinate axes. For rectangles, using “midconcavity” of the first eigenfunction (Bañuelos et al., Potential Anal. 24(3): 205–221, 2006), we obtain sharp upper and lower bound estimates of the spectral gap.
