Black holes are among the most extreme objects that can be found in the Universe and an ideal laboratory for testing fundamental physics. Here, the basic properties of black holes as expected from general relativity, the main astronomical observations, and the leading astrophysical techniques to probe the strong gravity region of these objects are reviewed. The main intention is to provide a compact introductory overview on astrophysical black holes to new students entering this research field, as well as to senior researchers working in general relativity and alternative theories of gravity, who wish to quickly learn the state of the art of astronomical observations of black holes.  相似文献

The observed 511 keV line from the Galactic Bulge is a real challenge for theoretical astrophysics: despite a lot of suggested mechanisms, there is still no convincing explanation and the origin of the annihilated positrons remains unknown. Here we discuss the possibility that a population of slowly evaporating primordial black holes with the mass around 1016–1017 g ejects (among other particles) low-energy positrons into the Galaxy. In addition to positrons, we have also calculated the spectrum and number density of photons and neutrinos produced by such black holes and found that the photons are potentially observable in the near future, while the neutrino flux is too weak and below the terrestrial and extra-terrestrial backgrounds. Depending on their mass distribution, such black holes could make a small fraction or the whole cosmological dark matter.  相似文献

An analytical expression of a Floquet operator, which describes the evolution of a wave packet in combined atomic and an intense laser field, is obtained approximately in the stabilization regime. Both the classical and quantum versions of the Floquet operator are used to study the phase-space dynamics of atomic stabilization, and the "fringe structure" in the phase-space is clearly demonstrated. Furthermore, we investigate the dynamical mechanism and characters of this striking structure, and find that this structure is very closely related to the classical invariant manifolds.  相似文献

In this Letter, we conduct an extensive study of the two-segment Frenkel-Kontorova model. We show that the rectification effect of the heat flux reported in recent literature is possible only in the weak interfacial coupling limit. The rectification effect will be reversed when the properties of the interface and the system size change. These two types of asymmetric heat conduction are governed by different mechanisms though both are induced by nonlinearity. An intuitive physical picture is proposed to interpret the reversal of the rectification effect. Since asymmetric heat conduction depends critically on the properties of the interface and the system size, it is probably not an easy task to fabricate a thermal rectifier or thermal diode in practice.  相似文献

Gravitational particle production in a time variable metric of an expanding universe is efficient only when the Hubble parameter H is not too small in comparison with the particle mass. In standard cosmology, the huge value of the Planck mass M{Pl} makes the mechanism phenomenologically irrelevant. On the other hand, in braneworld cosmology, the expansion rate of the early Universe can be much faster, and many weakly interacting particles can be abundantly created. We study the excitation of axial quasi-normal modes of deformed non-rotating black holes by test particles and we compare the associated gravitational wave signal with that expected in general relativity from a Schwarzschild black hole. Deviations from standard predictions are quantified by an effective deformation parameter, which takes into account deviations from both the Schwarzschild metric and the Einstein equations. We show that, at least in the case of non-rotating black holes, it is possible to test the metric around the compact object, in the sense that the measurement of the gravitational wave spectrum can constrain possible deviations from the Schwarzschild solution.  相似文献

We have studied the Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) model with Toda interactions. The phase diagram is found to be asymmetric due to the exponential form of the Toda interaction. The reflection symmetry observed in the standard FK model is broken here. The singularity spectrum and the generalized dimension are calculated and their dependence on the nonlinearity parameter is discussed. The critical exponents of the gap in the phonon spectrum, the correlation length, and the Peierls-Nabarro barrier are found to be the same as those in the standard FK model and are independent of the nonlinearity parameter.  相似文献

We present a theoretical study of vortical plasmonic lattice solitons, which form in two-dimensional arrays of metallic nanowires embedded into nonlinear media with both focusing and defocusing Kerr nonlinearities.
