First observation of the decay Bs0-->Ds-Ds+ and measurement of its branching ratio

We report the observation of the exclusive decay Bs0-->Ds-Ds+ at the 7.5 standard deviation level using 355 pb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II detector in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. We measure the relative branching ratio B(Bs0-->Ds-Ds+)/B(B0-->D-Ds+)=1.44(-0.44)(+0.48). Using the world average value for B(B0-->D-Ds+), we find B(Bs0-->Ds-Ds+)=(9.4(-4.2)(+4.4))x10(-3). This provides a lower bound DeltaGammasCP/Gammas>or=2B(Bs0-->Ds-Ds+)>1.2x10(-2) at 95% C.L.     

Search for heavy toplike quarks using lepton plus jets events in 1.96 TeV pp collisions

We present the results of a search for pair production of a new heavy toplike quark t' decaying to a W boson and another quark using the Collider Detector at Fermilab II detector in run II of the Tevatron pp collider. Using a data sample corresponding to 760 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we fit the observed spectrum of total transverse energy and reconstructed t' quark mass to a combination of standard model processes and t' pair production. We see no evidence for t't' production, and we infer a lower limit of 256 GeV/c(2) on the mass of the t' at 95% C.L. assuming standard strong couplings for the t'.     

Search for a Higgs boson in the diphoton final state in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV

A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 7.0 fb{-1} of integrated luminosity from pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of such a resonance is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of Higgs boson mass. The limits are interpreted in the context of the standard model and one fermiophobic benchmark model where the data exclude fermiophobic Higgs bosons with masses below 114 GeV/c{2} at a 95% Bayesian credibility level.     

Precise measurement of the W-boson mass with the CDF II detector

We have measured the W-boson mass M(W) using data corresponding to 2.2 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Samples consisting of 470,126 W → eν candidates and 624,708 W → μν candidates yield the measurement M(W) = 80,387 ± 12(stat.) ± 15(syst.) = 80,387 ± 19 MeV/c2. This is the most precise measurement of the W-boson mass to date and significantly exceeds the precision of all previous measurements combined.     

Contribution of decay products of transfer reactions to heavy-ion inelastic and transfer spectra

A study of decay product contributions to inclusive ejectile kinetic energy spectra is presented. Analytical formulae for the positions and widths of these contributions are derived from kinematical considerations. A formal integral expression for the double-differential cross section $\text{d}{}^2\text{σ/}\text{d}\text{Ω}\text{d}\text{E}$ is given in the case of one-particle emission from an excited state of the ejectile. The effects of anisotropic angular distributions are studied. The differential cross sections are then computed by a Monte Carlo method and compared to experimental spectra over a large range of measured systems. The transfer-evaporation mechanism is shown to contribute strongly to the background of the spectra but not to be responsible for the narrow structure observed in some reactions.     

Structural requirements in chiral diphosphine-rhodium complexes. X asymmetric homogeneous hydrogenation of z-N-acetyldehydroamino acids and esters with (1R,2R)-trans-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)cyclobutane/rhodium(I) complexes.

Z--acetamidocinnamate esters were hydrogenated with neutral rhodium(I) complexes containing (1R,2R)-trans-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)cyclobutane. Increasing the steric bulk of the alcohol moiety in the unsaturated esters had little influence upon the optical purity of the N-acetylphanylalanine ester products. In the series Me, Et, i-Pr, and t-Bu the optical purity decreased from 44 % ee-(R) [Me] to 40 % ee-(R) [t-Bu]. The chiral cyclobutane diphosphine appears to be only slightly more effective than the heterocyclic DIOP when ring-substituted Z--acetamidocinnamic acids are hydrogenated with neutral rhodium(I) complexes without the addition of triethylamine. Addition of triethylamine to the solvent blend seems to be more beneficial to the cyclobutane analogue than to DIOP.     

Study of light proton-rich nuclei by complete kinematics measurements

Light proton-rich bound and unbound nuclei were produced by means of stripping reactions of secondary beams of ²⁰Mg and ¹⁸Ne. The decays of the unbound nuclei ^18,19Na have been measured by detecting their decay products ^17,18Ne and one proton and by performing an invariant-mass reconstruction. For ¹⁸Na, the present work is the first measurement of its decay. As the decay scheme of this nucleus could not be determined, two possible scenarios are proposed and discussed. In addition, the decay of excited states in ¹⁷Ne via two-proton emission was observed.
