Enhancement in specific heat due to anion impurities in KCl

The specific heats of KCl containing respectively 5% KBr and 1.8% Kl, have been computed at various temperatures by Green's function technique. For the computation of specific heat, we have considered the vibrations of impurity and all its nearest neighbours, i.e., seven atoms defect space. A simple lattice dynamical model including a change of mass and a change in short-range interactions has been used in the computations. The computed results have been compared with the experimental results of Karlson for KCl:Br system and Kvavadze et al. for KCl:I system. A good agreement is found between them.     

Laser spectroscopic properties of Nd3+ -doped tellurite glasses

The stimulated emission cross-section σ and fluorescence lifetime for the 1.06 μm emission (⁴F_3/2 →⁴I_1/12) have been measured for a number of Nd-doped tellurite glasses. The measured value of σ ? 9 × 10^-20 cm ² for the tellurite glasses is to be compared with the value of 3.5 × 10^-20 cm ² for the ED-2 glass. Based on the measured spectroscopic parameters, an LED-pumped tellurite glass fiber laser is predicted to perform better than ED-2 glass, both in the longitudinal and transverse pumping configuration. The threshold for side-pumped tellurite glass laser can be comparable or even lower than that in Nd:YAG.     

The polarography of oximes: I. 9,10-Phenanthraquinone monoxime

Polarography of 9,10-phenanthraquinone monoxime has been carried out in buffers (pH 3.50 to 13.40) of constant ionic strength 0.5 M in 40% alcoholic solutions at 35 ± 0.5 °C. The oxime group underwent diffusion-controlled reduction (4e) over the whole pH range studied. The number of electrons involved in the reduction was found coulometrically as well as by incorporating the value of the diffusion coefficient, obtained by using a McBain-Dawson cell, into the Ilkovic equation. Controlled potential electrolyses and uv spectroscopic methods were used to identify the products. Koutecky's method was used to compute the kinetic parameters (αn_aand ?log k_f,h^o) for the reduction of the oxime group and reduction mechanisms are proposed.
