Synthesis and structural characterization of mixed aluminum-gallium-offretites

A new synthesis procedure is reported for the preparation of mixed Al,Ga-offretites over the entire solid solution range 0 ≤ Ga/(Ga + Al) ≤ 1. The resulting materials are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, adsorption microcalorimetry and multinuclear solid state NMR. The ²⁹Si MAS-NMR data are consistent with statistical occupancy of the T₁ and T₂ sites by aluminum and gallium, and also show no positive evidence for preferential siting effects between both framework metals. Isotropic chemical shifts and nuclear electric quadrupolar coupling constants for ²⁷Al and ⁷¹Ga have been obtained from a field-dependent analysis of the center of gravity in the MAS-NMR spectra. H-Al, Ga-offretites produced by ammonium exchange and subsequent calcination reveal evidence of partial demetallation of the framework with formation of extra-lattice metal species.     

Deterministic single-photon source for distributed quantum networking

A sequence of single photons is emitted on demand from a single three-level atom strongly coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity. The photons are generated by an adiabatically driven stimulated Raman transition between two atomic ground states, with the vacuum field of the cavity stimulating one branch of the transition, and laser pulses deterministically driving the other branch. This process is unitary and therefore intrinsically reversible, which is essential for quantum communication and networking, and the photons should be appropriate for all-optical quantum information processing.     

Fluctuations and defects in the spiral state of magnetic superconductors

We want to point out three properties of a magnetic superconductor: (i) The absence of true long-range order in the spiral state leads to the structure functions behaving like (q₆ ? q₀)^η?2 and (q²_⊥)^η?2 for q_⊥=0 and q₆=0, respectively, where q₀ is the preferred momentum. The indices η are measured via Bragg-like neutron scattering. (ii) The state is perforated by line-like defects. (iii) Above some critical temperature the defect lines proliferate, thereby destroying the spiral quasi-order.     

Single-mode fiber laser based on core-cladding mode conversion

A single-mode fiber laser based on an intracavity core-cladding mode conversion is demonstrated. The fiber laser consists of an Er-doped active fiber and two fiber Bragg gratings. One Bragg grating is a core-cladding mode converter, and the other Bragg grating is a narrowband high reflector that selects the lasing wavelength. Coupling a single core mode and a single cladding mode by the grating mode converter, the laser operates as a hybrid single-mode laser. This approach for designing a laser cavity provides a much larger mode area than conventional large-mode-area step-index fibers.
