Polycarbonate (PC), which is considered to be a ductile amorphous polymer, is prone to brittle fracture in the presence of sharp notches. In the present work, effect of notch-tip radius on brittle fracture of PC is studied under static and under dynamic loading (high loading rates) conditions. Towards this end, a hybrid experimental and numerical approach is adopted. Dynamic fracture experiments using Hopkinson bar setup are performed on single-edge notched specimen of PC having different notch-tip radii. Ultra-high speed imaging is used for real-time observation of the fracture process. Finite element simulations are simultaneously performed using a well calibrated elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model for polymers. In the presence of a notch, brittle fracture in PC starts with a defect nucleation ahead of it. For each notch-tip radii, we are experimentally able to capture the process of defect initiation and quantify the mean stress required, static as well as dynamic loading. We found that the mean stress required for defect nucleation increases with decreasing notch-tip radius due to increased triaxility at the notch-tip. Defect initiation stresses are also higher for dynamic conditions compared to static loading. Defect initiation toughness for dynamic loading is always higher than those for static loading, but reduction in defect initiation toughness with decreasing notch-tip is severe for dynamic loading.  相似文献

This paper applies multifractal spectrum theory to characterize the structural complexity of 3D surface roughness of copper (II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine (CuTsPc) films on the indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate, obtained with atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. CuTsPc films were prepared by drop cast method on ITO substrate. CuTsPc films surface roughness was studied by AFM in tapping‐mode?, in air, on square areas of 2500 µm2. A novel approach, on the basis of computational algorithms for analysis of 3D roughness surface applied for AFM data, was presented. Results revealed that the 3D surface roughness of CuTsPc films prepared by drop cast method on ITO substrate can be described using the multifractal geometry. The generalized dimensions Dq and the multifractal spectrum f(α) provided quantitative values that characterize the local scale properties of CuTsPc films surface geometry at nanometer scale. Data provide valuable information to describe the spatial arrangement of 3D surface roughness of CuTsPc films on ITO substrate, which was not taken into account by classical surface statistical parameters. Thermodynamic, dielectric, optical and switching parameters of a single-phase antiferroelectric (AF) liquid crystalline material (S)-(+)-4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)-2,3-difluorophenyl 4′-[3-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxy)prop-1-oxy]biphenyl-4-carboxylate have been studied. These studies show wide temperature range (~97.8°C–25.3°C) of AF SmC*A phase in the material. The dielectric studies have been carried out in the frequency range of 1 Hz–35 MHz under planar anchoring conditions of the molecules. The dielectric spectrum of the SmC*A phase exhibits three relaxation modes due to the collective as well as individual molecular processes. Relaxation frequencies of these modes lie in the range of kHz–MHz regions. Relative permittivity of the material (at 10 kHz) varies from ~8.8 at 98.8°C to 9.9 at 41.0°C. Maximum tilt of the molecule in the SmC*A phase is ~43°C. Spontaneous polarisation, switching time and rotational viscosity have also been determined. The maximum value of PS is ~439 nC/cm2 and switching time is the order of 1–5 millisecond, whereas viscosity is moderate.  相似文献

The M/M/k/setup model, where there is a penalty for turning servers on, is common in data centers, call centers, and manufacturing systems. Setup costs take the form of a time delay, and sometimes there is additionally a power penalty, as in the case of data centers. While the M/M/1/setup was exactly analyzed in 1964, no exact analysis exists to date for the M/M/k/setup with $k>1$ . In this paper, we provide the first exact, closed-form analysis for the M/M/k/setup and some of its important variants including systems in which idle servers delay for a period of time before turning off or can be put to sleep. Our analysis is made possible by a new way of combining renewal reward theory and recursive techniques to solve Markov chains with a repeating structure. Our renewal-based approach uses ideas from renewal reward theory and busy period analysis to obtain closed-form expressions for metrics of interest such as the transform of time in system and the transform of power consumed by the system. The simplicity, intuitiveness, and versatility of our renewal-based approach makes it useful for analyzing Markov chains far beyond the M/M/k/setup. In general, our renewal-based approach should be used to reduce the analysis of any 2-dimensional Markov chain which is infinite in at most one dimension and repeating to the problem of solving a system of polynomial equations. In the case where all transitions in the repeating portion of the Markov chain are skip-free and all up/down arrows are unidirectional, the resulting system of equations will yield a closed-form solution.  相似文献

We consider the influence of local noise on a generalized network of populations having positive and negative feedbacks. The population dynamics at the nodes is nonlinear, typically chaotic, and allows cessation of activity if the population falls below a threshold value. We investigate the global stability of this large interactive system, as indicated by the average number of nodal populations that manage to remain active. Our central result is that the probability of obtaining active nodes in this network is significantly enhanced under fluctuations. Further, we find a sharp transition in the number of active nodes as noise strength is varied, along with clearly evident scaling behaviour near the critical noise strength. Lastly, we also observe noise induced temporal coherence in the active sub-network, namely, there is an enhancement in synchrony among the nodes at an intermediate noise strength.  相似文献

Patterned homeotropic alignment using nanoparticles (NPs) was achieved using inkjet printing. Two types of gold NPs, one smaller and one larger in core diameter (2 and 5 nm) capped with a monolayer of dodecanethiol, and emissive carbon dots with a core diameter of 2.5 nm featuring a mixed ligand shell of carboxylic acid groups and aliphatic hydrocarbon chains were tested on both rigid glass and flexible polycarbonate substrates. To define the director across the entire cell and not just in the NP-printed areas, alignment ‘underlayers’ were tested, and 30° obliquely evaporated SiOx as alignment ‘underlayer’ generally provided the best results with the highest quality of the homeotropic alignment as well as the best contrast at the boundary between printed and non-printed (i.e. homeotropic and planar) domains of the fabricated cells. We also report that the chemical nature of the nematic liquid crystal (LC) used, the number of layers printed and the composition of the nano-ink need to be adjusted to obtain pattern alignment devices that positively benefit from both the properties of the LC and the nanomaterial printed.  相似文献

A series of novel PABA-substituted 1,3,5-triazine derivatives were developed via microwave assisted synthesis and subsequently tested for antimalarial activity against chloroquine sensitive 3D7 strain of Plasmodium falciparum using chloroquine as standard. Antimalarial screening result showed that synthesized compounds exhibited IC50 in the range of 4.46 to 79.72 μg mL−1. Among the tested compounds, 4c and 4f showed significant antimalarial activity with low binding energies (BE) -172.32 and 160.41 kcal mol−1 via interacting with Arg122 through the involvement of COOH of the phenyl linked to 1,3,5-triazine. In conclusion, these core scaffolds can be used for future antimalarial drug development.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Non-woven mats comprised of liquid crystal-functionalised fibres are coaxially electrospun to create soft gas sensors that function non-electronically, thus requiring no power supply, detecting organic vapours at room temperature. The fibres consist of a poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) sheath surrounding a core of nematic 4-cyano-4?pentylbiphenyl (5CB) liquid crystal. Several types of mats, containing uniformly cylindrical or irregular beaded fibres, in uniform or random orientations, are exposed to toluene vapour as a representative volatile organic compound. Between crossed polarisers all mats respond with a fast (response time on the order of a second or faster) reduction in brightness during gas exposure, and they return to the original state upon removal of the gas almost as quickly. With beaded fibres, the response of the mats is visible even without polarisers. We discuss how variations in fibre spinning conditions such as humidity level and the ratio of core-sheath fluid flow rates can be used to tune fibre morphology and thereby the response. Considering future development perspectives, we argue that fibres turned responsive through the incorporation of a liquid crystal core show promise as a new generation of sensors with textile form factor, ideal for wearable technology applications.  相似文献
