In this work we demonstrate a new microfluidic method for the rapid assessment of platelet size and morphology in whole blood. The device continuously fractionates particles according to size by displacing them perpendicularly to the fluid flow direction in a micro-fabricated post array. Whole blood, labeled with the fluorescent, platelet specific, antibody PE-anti-CD41, was run through the device and the positions of fluorescent objects noted as they exited the array. From this, histograms of platelet size were created which show marked increases in size after exposure to thrombin or a temperature of 4 degrees C. We infer that the well known morphological changes that occur during activation are causing the observed increase in size.  相似文献

The first laboratory confirmation of stochastic growth theory is reported. Floating potential fluctuations are measured in a vacuum arc centrifuge using a Langmuir probe. Statistical analysis of the energy density reveals a lognormal distribution over roughly 2 orders of magnitude, with a high-field nonlinear cutoff whose spatial dependence is consistent with the predicted eigenmode profile. These results are consistent with stochastic growth and nonlinear saturation of a spatially extended eigenmode, the first evidence for stochastic growth of an extended structure.  相似文献

Neutral-beam injection into plasmas with negative central shear produces a rich spectrum of toroidicity-induced and reversed-shear Alfvén eigenmodes in the DIII-D tokamak. The first application of fast-ion D_{alpha} (FIDA) spectroscopy to Alfvén-eigenmode physics shows that the central fast-ion profile is anomalously flat in the inner half of the discharge. Neutron and equilibrium measurements corroborate the FIDA data. The current density driven by fast ions is also strongly modified. Calculations based on the measured mode amplitudes do not explain the observed fast-ion transport.  相似文献

Phase space quasi-probability distributions of certain quantum states reveal structure on a scale that is small compared to the Planck area. Using an analog between the wavefunction of a single photon and the electric field of a classical ultrashort optical pulse we show that spectral shearing interferometry enables measurement of such structure directly, thereby extending an idea of Krzysztof Wódkiewicz and others. In particular, we use multiple-shear spectral interferometry to fully characterize a pulse consisting of two sub-pulses which are temporally and spectrally disjoint, without a relative-phase ambiguity. This enables us to compute the Wigner distribution of the pulse. This spectrographic representation of the pulse field features fringes that are tilted with respect to both the time- and frequency axes, showing that in general the shortest sub-Planck distances may not be in the directions of the canonical (and easily experimentally accessible) directions. Further, independent of this orientation, evidence of the sub-Planck scale of the structure may be extracted directly from the measured signal.  相似文献

The analysis of various varnishes from different origins, which are commonly found on historical musical instruments was carried out for the first time with both fluorescence excitation emission spectroscopy and laser-induced time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Samples studied include varnishes prepared using shellac, and selected diterpenoid and triterpenoid resins from plants, and mixtures of these materials. Fluorescence excitation emission spectra have been collected from films of naturally aged varnishes. In parallel, time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy of varnishes provides means for discriminating between short- (less than 2.0 ns) and long-lived (greater than 7.5 ns) fluorescence emissions in each of these complex materials. Results suggest that complementary use of the two non destructive techniques allows a better understanding of the main fluorophores responsible for the emission in shellac, and further provides means for distinguishing the main classes of other varnishes based on differences in fluorescence lifetime behaviour. Spectrofluorimetric data and time resolved spectra presented here may form the basis for the interpretation of results from future in situ fluorescence examination and time resolved fluorescence imaging of varnished musical instruments.  相似文献

The effect of salt concentration on the ubiquitous ionic interactions observed in the case of the silver ion conducting polymer electrolyte system poly(propylene glycol) (PPG)-silver triflate has been investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy as a probe for the characterization of the local environment of the triflate ion in PPG-based polymer electrolytes. The maximum free anion concentrations of symmetric and asymmetric SO(3) stretching modes in the case of poly(propylene glycol) complexed with silver triflate (AgCF(3)SO(3)) corresponding to the ether oxygen metal cation ratios from 2:1 to 6:1 have been investigated in detail. The present Fourier transform infrared spectral studies of the C-O-C stretching mode have shown reduction in the intensity, due to the decrease of salt concentration. The splitting of vibrational modes has been analyzed in terms of free ions, ion pairs and aggregates. The bands of SO(3) symmetric stretching mode appearing at 1032 and 1038 cm(-1) in the chosen polymer electrolyte material have been assigned to free ions and ion pairs respectively.  相似文献
