Hydrogenation of olefins by π-arene ruthenium complexes : A role of π-arene ligand in catalytic activity

The divalent ruthenium complexes bearing benzene, mesitylene triphenylbenzene as a π-ligand were prepared and their catalytic activity for olefin hydrogenation was examined. They showed activity in the presence of a small amount of base. Particularly, the complex with triphenylbenzene was found to have extremely high activity. Discussion here is on a role of a π-arene ligand in the activity.     

Separation of traces of palladium using mercury as collector

Summary Microgram quantities of palladium are quantitatively deposited into mercury globules from various acid solutions. Mercury is removed by evaporation from the resulting amalgam before the subsequent determination.

Photoelectric pulse interval distribution of gaussian-lorentzian light

The time interval distribution of two successive photoelectric pulses depends not only upon the spectral linewidth but also on the correlation factor. The distribution is derived in the case of gaussian-lorentzian light under the condition of a markovian process and is also applied to the analysis of the counting loss of a circuit with dead time, from which information on the spectral linewidth is obtained. The theoretical counting loss is compared with the experimental one.     

Hydrogen bond directed self-assembly of core-substituted naphthalene bisimides with melamines in solution and at the graphite interface

A series of red and blue highly fluorescent core-substituted naphthalene bisimide dyes has been synthesized and they have been investigated as supramolecular building blocks. NMR and UV-Vis titration experiments of these dyes with complementary melamines revealed the formation of triple hydrogen bonds (DAD-ADA arrays) in solution. At stoichiometric ratios, ditopic melamine receptors could dissolve otherwise insoluble bisimides by means of hydrogen bonding, even in aliphatic solvents. At the solution/graphite interface, one-dimensional chains of hydrogen bonded naphthalene bisimides and two-dimensional adlayers of ditopic melamines are formed for the pure compounds but little evidence for heterocomplexes between the two complementary building blocks could be obtained.     

Clathrate-formation mediated adsorption of methane on Cu-complex crystals

We measured adsorption and desorption isotherms of methane on [Cu(4, 4'-bipyridine)2(BF4)2] (LPC) at 258, 273, and 303 K. Adsorption proceeds almost vertically at a definite pressure, which is named gate pressure. The lower the measurement temperature, the smaller the gate pressure. The temperature dependence of the gate pressure is expressed by the Clapeyron-Clausius equation, giving a thermodynamic evidence on the clathrate formation between the Cu complex and methane.     

Photon number squeezing of ultrabroadband laser pulses generated by microstructure fibers

To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate for the first time the generation of photon number squeezing by spectral filtering for ultrabroadband light generated by microstructure fibers at 800 nm. A maximum squeezing of 4.6 dB is observed, corresponding to 10.3 dB after correcting for detection losses. We numerically analyzed the quantum dynamics of ultrashort laser pulse propagation through optical fibers by solving a nonlinear quantum Schr?dinger equation that included Raman scattering, especially for the quantum correlation of photon number fluctuation among frequency modes in broadband pulses.     

Transport coefficients of a gluon plasma

Transport coefficients of gluon plasma are calculated for an SU(3) pure gauge model by lattice QCD simulations on 16(3) x 8 and 24(3) x 8 lattices. Simulations are carried out at slightly above the deconfinement transition temperature T(c), where a new state of matter is currently being pursued in BNL RHIC experiments. Our results show that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy is less than one and the bulk viscosity is consistent with zero in the region 1.4 < or = T/T(c) < or = 1.8.     

Subwavelength optical imaging through a metallic nanorod array

We propose a subwavelength imaging system without a lens or a mirror but with an array of metallic nanorods. The near-field components of dipole sources were plasmonically transferred through the rod array to reproduce the source distribution in the other side. We calculated the field distribution at the different planes of imaging process using the finite-difference time-domain algorithm and found that the spatial resolution was 40 nm given by the rod size and spacing. A typical configuration is a hexagonal arrangement of silver rods of 50 nm height and 20 nm diameter. We also show that the image formation highly depends on the coherence and the polarization of the source distribution and the source-array distance.
