Sub-Doppler high-resolution excitation spectroscopy of the S1 ← S0 transition of dibenzofuran

Rotationally resolved ultrahigh-resolution fluorescence excitation spectra of the S₁ ← S₀ transition of dibenzofuran have been observed using the technique of crossing a collimated molecular beam and the single-mode UV laser beam. 3291 rotational lines of the band and 3047 rotational lines of the band have been assigned. The band has been found to be a b-type transition, in which the transition moment is along the twofold symmetry axis of this molecule, and only the ΔK_a = ± 1 transitions were observed. The excited state is identified to be the S₁¹A₁(ππ^∗) state. In contrast with this, the band has been found to be an a-type transition in which the transition moment is along the long axis in plane. It indicates that the intensity of this vibronic band arises from vibronic coupling with the S₂¹B₂(ππ^∗) state. We determined the accurate rotational constants and the molecule have been shown to be planar both in the ground and excited states.     

Generation of subpicosecond vacuum ultraviolet pulses at 126 nm by using harmonics of a subpicosecond Ti:Sapphire laser

Subpicosecond vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) pulses at the wavelength of 126 nm have been generated in rare gases as a result of the 7th harmonic radiation of a subpicosecond Ti:Sapphire laser oscillating at 882 nm. The VUV harmonic intensity was optimized in Xe at the pressure of 1.2 Torr. The behavior of the harmonic emission was qualitatively reproduced by the classical nonlinear optics. The increase of the harmonic intensity was limited by multiphoton ionization of Xe.

Broad-spectrum frequency comb generation and carrier-envelope offset frequency measurement by second-harmonic generation of a mode-locked fiber laser

A frequency comb spanning more than one octave has been achieved by injecting the second-harmonic generation (780 nm) of a mode-locked fiber laser (1.56 microm) into a photonic crystal fiber. We propose and realize a novel interferometric scheme for observing the carrier-envelope offset frequency of the frequency comb. Frequency noise has been observed on the measured carrier-envelope offset frequency, which has been confirmed to be generated in the photonic crystal fiber by comparing the measured beat frequencies between cw lasers and frequency combs before and after the photonic crystal fiber. The mode-locked fiber laser is considered to be an important candidate for the light source used in realizing a compact optical frequency measurement system including applications in the telecommunication bands.     

Norton's Trace Formulae for the Griess Algebra¶of a Vertex Operator Algebra with Larger Symmetry

Formulae expressing the trace of the composition of several (up to five) adjoint actions of elements of the Griess algebra of a vertex operator algebra are derived under certain assumptions on the action of the automorphism group. They coincide, when applied to the moonshine module V , with the trace formulae obtained in a different way by S. Norton, and the spectrum of some idempotents related to 2A, 2B, 3A and 4A elements of the Monster is determined by the representation theory of the Virasoro algebra at c= 1/2, the W ₃ algebra at c= 4/5 or the W ₄ algebra at c= 1. The generalization to the trace function on the whole space is also given for the composition of two adjoint actions, which can be used to compute the McKay-Thompson series for a 2A involution of the Monster. Combined effects of high pressure and sodium hydrogen carbonate treatment on pork ham: improvement of texture and palatability

In this study, the combined effects of high pressure and sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO₃) treatment on the physical and chemical properties, and palatability of pork ham, a tough and under-utilized meat, were investigated. Assessment of meat properties with heat treatment, after exposure to NaHCO₃ and high pressure treatment, revealed an increase in water content, and decreased weight reduction and rupture stress. The free amino acid content of meat samples increased with NaHCO₃ and high pressure treatment. The effect of high pressure processing was especially notable at a pressure of 300 MPa. Sensory evaluation showed that meat subjected to high pressure processing after NaHCO₃ treatment was tender and juicy. In addition, the sample produced minimal residue in the mouth and was characterized by a good taste.     

Diffuse ultra-high energy neutrino fluxes and physics beyond the Standard Model

We study spectral distortions of diffuse ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino flavour fluxes resulting due to physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Even large spectral differences between flavours at the source are massaged into a common shape at earth by SM oscillations, thus, any significant observed spectral differences are an indicator of new physics present in the oscillation probability during propagation. Lorentz symmetry violation (LV) and neutrino decay are examples, and result in significant distortion of the fluxes and of the well-known bounds on them, which may allow UHE detectors to probe LV parameters, lifetimes and the mass hierarchy over a broad range.     

Surface-sensitive NMR in optically pumped semiconductors

We present a scheme of surface-sensitive nuclear magnetic resonance in optically pumped semiconductors, where an NMR signal from a part of the surface of a bulk compound semiconductor is detected apart from the bulk signal. It utilizes optically oriented nuclei with a long spin-lattice relaxation time as a polarization reservoir for the second (target) nuclei to be detected. It provides a basis for the nuclear spin polarizer [IEEE Trans. Appl. Supercond. 14:1635, 2004], which is a polarization reservoir at the surface of the optically pumped semiconductor that polarizes nuclear spins in a target material in contact through the nanostructured interfaces.     

Additional cytotoxic substances isolated from the sponge-derived Gymnascella dankaliensis

A continuous investigation of secondary metabolites produced by the sponge-derived fungus, Gymnascella dankaliensis, has yielded a new polyketide tyrosine derivative, dankastatin C (3) and the known steroid, demethylincisterol A₃ (4), which was originally found from a Homaxinella marine sponge. The stereostructure of the new compound has been determined based on the analysis of 1D and 2D NMR data. Dankastatin C (3) showed potent cell growth inhibitory activity against the murine P388 cell line.
