Collective sea-gull effect in πp interactions at 250 GeV/c

A collective “sea-gull” effect is observed for a system of fast hadrons produced in the fragmentation regions of nondiffractive π⁺p-interactions at 250 GeV/c. The effect is not reproduced by the FRITIOF fragmentation model in its details. It is demonstrated that hard-like processes, both in the collision phase and in the fragmentation phase, are not properly treated in the model.     

Higher order bose-einstein correlations in π+p and K+p collisions at 250 GeV/c

Bose-Einstein correlations up to fourth order are presented at $\sqrt s = 22GeV$ . Genuine third-order correlations are observed. The experimental data are compared with predictions from a quantum statistical approach of radiation from a partially coherent source and with the FRITIOF model.     

Effect of nuclear matter on the production of hadrons in deep-inelastic neutrino scattering

The inclusive spectra of hadrons are measured with the aid of the SKAT propane-freon bubble chamber irradiated with a beam of 3-to 30-GeV neutrinos from the Serpukhov accelerator. The resulting data indicate that the intranuclear absorption of leading quark-fragmentation products is enhanced as the energy transfer to the quark involved decreases or as the quark-energy fraction z acquired by the product hadron increases. An analysis of the data on the basis of the color-string model reveals that the cross section for the intranuclear absorption of positively charged hadrons that are characterized by z values in the range between 0.7 and 0.9 is close to the inelastic cross section for pion-nucleon interaction.     

A study of double pomeron exchange inπ + p andK + p interactions at 250 GeV/c

Using the ARGUS detector at thee ⁺ e ^– storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have measured the inclusive production ofD ⁰,D ⁺ andD ^*(2010)⁺ mesons inB decays and in nonresonante ⁺ e ^– annihilation around 10.6 GeV. The inclusive branching ratios forB decays toD ⁰,D ⁺ andD ^*+ mesons are found to be (52.2±8.2±3.5)%, (27.2±6.3±3.5)% and (34.8±6.0±3.5)% respectively. Thus,D ⁰ andD ⁺ production account for about 70% of the charm produced inB decays, neglectingbu contributions to the total width. The production cross sections and momentum spectra for continuume ⁺ e ^– annihilation are also presented.Supported by the German Bundesministerium für Forschung und Technologie, under contract number 054DO51P     

Strange and non-strange baryon production in π+ p andK + p interactions at 250 GeV/c

We present data on the production of the baryons Λ, \(\bar \Lambda \) ,p and of the baryon resonances Σ^*+ (1385) and Δ⁺⁺ (1232) inK ⁺ p and π⁺ p interactions at 250 GeV/c. Results are given on total and semi-inclusive cross sections, Feynman-x spectra, transverse momentum distributions and Λ polarization. The data are compared with measurements at lower energies, with deep inclastic lepton nucleon data and with predictions of quark-parton models. The models underestimate Λ production in the central c.m. region, a feature also seen in recent heavy-ion data. This failure can be cured in JETSET 6.3 by adjustment of the di-quark break-up probability.     

Spectral Properties of the Cauchy Operator and Its Product with Bergman's Projection on a Bounded Domain

In this paper exact asymptotic formulae are found for singularvalues of the Cauchy operator and the logarithmic potentialtype operator (on a bounded domain), as well as their productswith Bergman's projection. It is shown that these spectral characteristicsdetect geometric properties of a domain (area and the lengthof the boundary). The hypothesis "can we hear the shape of adrum", from a paper by J.M. Anderson, D. Khavinson, and V. Lomonosov[‘Spectral properties of some integral operators arisingin potential theory’, Quart. J. Math. Oxford (2) 43 (1992)387-407], is correct in the above sense. 1991 Mathematics SubjectClassification: 47B10.     

Pomeron-pomeron cross section from inclusive production of a central cluster in quasi-elastic π+ p andK + p scattering at 250 GeV/c

Meson-nucleon quasi-elastic scattering is studied with (semi) inclusive production of a central hadron cluster. The dominant mechanism of central cluster production is double pomeron exchange. The cross section is (39±5±8) b and (24±6±3) b for pion and kaon induced reactions, respectively. An estimate of the pomeron-pomeron total cross section _pp is extracted in the interval . While _pp=0.45±0.10mb is obtained in thef ₂(1270) region, an almost constant cross section with an average of _pp=0.16±0.02mb is observed outside thef ₂ region.Partially supported by grants from CPBP 01.06 and 01.09     

Wrap-around partitioning for block bidiagonal linear systems

A stable vector algorithm for the solution of block diagonallinear systems is obtained by a permutation of the unknownscalled wrap-around partitioning combined with standard QR factorization.Wrap-around partitioning uses blocking and selects the unknownsin the blocks in turns. After a suitable orthogonal eliminationstep one ends up with a reduced system which is again blockbidiagonal and so wrap-around partitioning can be applied again.Using a simple model for vectorization overhead it is shownthat small block sizes give best performance. The minimal blocksize 2, which corresponds to cyclic reduction, is suboptimaldue to memory bank conflicts.
