We develop a general theory of spatial solitons in a liquid crystalline medium exhibiting a nonlinearity with an arbitrary degree of effective nonlocality. The model accounts the observability of accessible solitons and establishes an important link with parametric solitons.  相似文献

With second-harmonic generation in surface and buried planar waveguides achieved by direct and reverse proton exchange in lithium niobate, we demonstrate a novel kind of quadratic spatial simulton: The transverse-electric fundamental input and the transverse-magnetic second-harmonic waves nonlinearly couple two superimposed planar waveguides, permitting transverse localization of light at room temperature and at excitations as low as 340 nJ in 20-ps pulses.  相似文献

We demonstrate that, in suitably designed cells with undoped nematic liquid crystals, extraordinary-wave spatial solitons can be excited at every applied voltage without adjustments in the input polarization. Their walk-off, hence direction of propagation, is externally controlled over angles as large as 7 degrees. The results pave the way not only to polarization-forgiving generation but also to voltage readdressing of these extraordinary-wave nematicons.  相似文献

We investigate the attractive interaction between spatial solitons in nematic liquid crystals with a tunable nonlinearity and a constant nonlocality. The experimental study, carried out by controlling the orientation of the optic axis via the electro-optic response, shows how the interactions depend on reorientation, in excellent agreement with a model accounting for the anisotropic nature of the dielectric.  相似文献

Dark nematicons     
We experimentally demonstrate and model dark spatial solitons in azo-doped liquid crystals, in the presence of saturation and nonlocality of the effective nonlinearity due to changes in molecular order. We report on the first (to our knowledge) experimental observation of higher-order modes guided by soliton-induced waveguides in nematic liquid crystals. We find that the nematicon waveguides operate in a bounded power region specific to each guided mode. Below this region, the guided beams diffract; above this region, the mode mixing and coupling give rise to an unstable output.  相似文献
