We present a detailed optical study of single-crystal bismuth using infrared reflectivity and ellipsometry. Large changes in the plasmon frequency are observed as a function of temperature due to charge transfer between hole and electron Fermi pockets. In the optical conductivity, an anomalous temperature dependent midinfrared absorption feature is observed. An extended Drude model analysis reveals that it can be connected to a sharp upturn in the scattering rate, the frequency of which exactly tracks the temperature dependent plasmon frequency. We interpret this absorption and increased scattering as direct optical evidence for a charge carrier interaction with a collective mode of purely electronic origin, here electron-plasmon scattering. The observation of a plasmaron as such is made possible only by the unique coincidence of various energy scales and exceptional properties of semimetal bismuth.  相似文献

There is increasing interest in obtaining quantitative imaging parameters to aid in the assessment of tumor responses to treatment. In this study, the feasibility of performing integrated diffusion, perfusion and permeability magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for characterizing responses to dexamethasone in intracranial tumors was assessed. Eight patients with glioblastoma, five with meningioma and three with metastatic carcinoma underwent MRI prior to and 48-72 h following dexamethasone administration. The MRI protocol enabled quantification of the volume transfer constant (K(trans)), extracellular space volume fraction (nu(e)), plasma volume fraction (nu(p)), regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV), longitudinal relaxation time (T(1)) and mean diffusivity (D(av)). All subjects successfully completed the imaging protocol for the presteroid and poststeroid scans. Significant reductions were observed after the treatment for K(trans), nu(e) and nu(p) in enhancing tumor as well as for T(1) and D(av) in the edematous brain in glioblastoma; on the other hand, for meningioma, significant differences were seen only in edematous brain T(1) and D(av). No significant difference was observed for any parameter in metastatic carcinoma, most likely due to the small sample size. In addition, no significant difference was observed for enhancing tumor rCBF and rCBV in any of the tumor types, although the general trend was for rCBV to be reduced and for rCBF to be more variable. The yielded parameters provide a wealth of physiologic information and contribute to the understanding of dexamethasone actions on different types of intracranial tumors.  相似文献

The expanded lattice material Mn4N contains two types of Mn site. The 55Mn NMR at the Mn(I) site has been measured to 9 kbar at 77K. The Mn(I) NMR frequency, and the magnetisation, increased with pressure which is attributed to a decrease in the magnitude of the moment at the Mn(II) site.  相似文献

Multifunctional molecules were designed to produce microgels with specific structures. Both static light scattering and dynamic light scattering were employed to determine the fractal dimension of the microgels. The protein, avidin, was strongly bound to four biotin moieties. Biotin was attached covalently to specifically engineered peptide nucleic acid (PNA) oligomers. Three designed DNA oligomers self‐assembled to produce a trifunctional three‐way junction (TWJ) with single‐stranded ends that were complementary to the PNA sequence. The sizes of the supramolecular aggregates were characterized by dynamic light scattering. The fractal dimension was obtained from the angular dependence of the scattered intensity when the microgels were large enough. When the microgels were formed via cooling from a temperature above the melting point of the PNA–DNA helices, reversible structures with a fractal dimension of approximately 1.86 were formed, which is consistent with a cluster–cluster aggregation mechanism. When the microgels were formed by the slow addition of biotinylated PNA bound to the TWJ to a solution of avidin at room temperature, the observed fractal dimension approached 2.6, which is consistent with a point–cluster aggregation mechanism. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Unsymmetrical cyanine dyes are widely used in biomolecular detection due to their fluorogenic behavior, whereby fluorescence quantum yields can be very low in fluid solution but are significantly enhanced in conformationally restricted environments. Herein we describe a series of fluorinated analogues of the dye thiazole orange that exhibit improved fluorescence quantum yields and photostabilities. In addition, computational studies on these dyes revealed that twisting about the monomethine bridge beyond an interplanar angle of 60 degrees leads to a dark state that decays nonradiatively to the ground state, accounting for the observed fluorogenic behavior. The effects of position and number of fluorine substituents correlate with both observed quantum yield and calculated activation energy for twisting beyond this critical angle.  相似文献

We describe the formation and characterization of surface-passivating poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) films on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrates. PEG chains with a molecular weight of 2000 and 5000 D were covalently attached to the substrates in a systematic approach using different coupling schemes. The coupling strategies included the direct grafting with PEG-silane, PEG-methacrylate, and PEG-bis(amine), as well as the two-step functionalization with aldehyde-bearing silane films and subsequent coupling with PEG-bis(amine). Elemental analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful surface modification, and XPS and ellipsometry provided values for film thicknesses. XPS and ellipsometry thickness values were almost identical for PEG-silane films but differed by up to 400% for the other PEG layers, suggesting a homogeneous layer for PEG-silane but an inhomogeneous distribution for other PEG coatings on the molecularly rough ITO substrates. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and water contact angle goniometry confirmed the different degrees of surface homogeneity of the polymer films, with PEG-silane reducing the AFM rms surface roughness by 50% and the water contact angle hysteresis by 75% compared to uncoated ITO. The ability of the PEG layers to passivate the substrate against the nonspecific adsorption of biopolymers was tested using fluorescence-labeled immunoglobulin G and DNA oligonucleotides in combination with fluorescence microscopy. The results indicate a positive relationship between film density and homogeneity on one hand and the ability to passivate against biopolymer adhesion on the other hand. The most homogeneous layers prepared with PEG-silane reduced the nonspecific adsorption of fluorescence-labeled DNA by a factor of 300 compared to uncoated ITO. In addition, the study finds that the ratio of film thicknesses derived by ellipsometry and XPS is a useful parameter to quantify the structural integrity of PEG layers on molecularly rough ITO surfaces. The findings may be applied to characterize PEG or other polymeric films on similarly coarse substrates.  相似文献
