Until now, the potential effects of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles on endothelial cells are not well understood, despite their already wide usage. Therefore, the present work characterizes six TiO2 nanoparticle samples in the size range of 19 × 17 to 87 × 13 nm, which are commonly present in sun protection agents with respect to their physicochemical properties (size, shape, ζ-potential, agglomeration, sedimentation, surface coating, and surface area), their interactions with serum proteins and biological impact on human microvascular endothelial cells (relative cellular dehydrogenase activity, adenosine triphosphate content, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 release). We observed no association of nanoparticle morphology with the agglomeration and sedimentation behavior and no variations of the ζ-potential (?14 to ?19 mV) in dependence on the surface coating. In general, the impact on endothelial cells was low and only detectable at concentrations of 100 μg/ml. Particles containing a rutile core and having rod-like shape had a stronger effect on cell metabolism than those with anatase core and elliptical shape (relative cellular dehydrogenase activity after 72 h: 60 vs. 90 %). Besides the morphology, the nanoparticle shell constitution was found to influence the metabolic activity of the cells. Upon cellular uptake, the nanoparticles were localized perinuclearly. Considering that in the in vivo situation endothelial cells would come in contact with considerably lower nanoparticle amounts than the lowest-observable adverse effects level (100 μg/ml), TiO2 nanoparticles can be considered as rather harmless to humans under the investigated conditions. 相似文献

The concept of using magnetic particles (seeds) as the implant for implant assisted-magnetic drug targeting (IA-MDT) was analyzed in vitro. Since this MDT system is being explored for use in capillaries, a highly porous (ε∼70%), highly tortuous, cylindrical, polyethylene polymer was prepared to mimic capillary tissue, and the seeds (magnetite nanoparticles) were already fixed within. The well-dispersed seeds were used to enhance the capture of 0.87 μm diameter magnetic drug carrier particles (MDCPs) (polydivinylbenzene embedded with 24.8 wt% magnetite) under flow conditions typically found in capillary networks. The effects of the fluid velocity (0.015–0.15 cm/s), magnetic field strength (0.0–250 mT), porous polymer magnetite content (0–7 wt%) and MDCP concentration (C=5 and 50 mg/L) on the capture efficiency (CE) of the MDCPs were studied. In all cases, when the magnetic field was applied, compared to when it was not, large increases in CE resulted; the CE increased even further when the magnetite seeds were present. The CE increased with increases in the magnetic field strength, porous polymer magnetite content and MDCP concentration. It decreased only with increases in the fluid velocity. Large magnetic field strengths were not necessary to induce MDCP capture by the seeds. A few hundred mT was sufficient. Overall, this first in vitro study of the magnetic seeding concept for IA-MDT was very encouraging, because it proved that magnetic particle seeds could serve as an effective implant for MDT systems, especially under conditions found in capillaries. 相似文献

The ability to segregate two spectrally and temporally overlapping signals based on differences in temporal envelope structure and binaural cues was investigated. Signals were a harmonic tone complex (HTC) with 20 Hz fundamental frequency and a bandpass noise (BPN). Both signals had interaural differences of the same absolute value, but with opposite signs to establish lateralization to different sides of the medial plane, such that their combination yielded two different spatial configurations. As an indication for segregation ability, threshold interaural time and level differences were measured for discrimination between these spatial configurations. Discrimination based on interaural level differences was good, although absolute thresholds depended on signal bandwidth and center frequency. Discrimination based on interaural time differences required the signals' temporal envelope structures to be sufficiently different. Long-term interaural cross-correlation patterns or long-term averaged patterns after equalization-cancellation of the combined signals did not provide information for the discrimination. The binaural system must, therefore, have been capable of processing changes in interaural time differences within the period of the harmonic tone complex, suggesting that monaural information from the temporal envelopes influences the use of binaural information in the perceptual organization of signal components. 相似文献

In this work, hydrogen plasma etching of surface oxides was successfully accomplished on thin (~100 µm) planar n‐type Czochralski silicon wafers prior to intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon [a‐Si:H(i)] deposition for heterojunction solar cells, using an industrial inductively coupled plasma‐enhanced chemical vapour deposition (ICPECVD) platform. The plasma etching process is intended as a dry alternative to the conventional wet‐chemical hydrofluoric acid (HF) dip for solar cell processing. After symmetrical deposition of an a‐Si:H(i) passivation layer, high effective carrier lifetimes of up to 3.7 ms are obtained, which are equivalent to effective surface recombination velocities of 1.3 cm s–1 and an implied open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 741 mV. The passivation quality is excellent and comparable to other high quality a‐Si:H(i) passivation. High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy shows evidence of plasma‐silicon interactions and a sub‐nanometre interfacial layer. In contrast to many cellulose derivatives, the cellulose O-silyl ethers with bulky side groups exhibit scarcely a change in glass transition temperature by a variation of the degree of substitution (DS) or degree of polymerization (DP) or by introducing phenyl carbamate groups for the remaining hydroxyls along the main chain. However, a substitution of these hydroxyls by flexible acetate groups lowers the glass transition temperature considerably. The secondary dispersion (relaxation) behavior is strongly influenced by the various substituents and can be correlated to specific motions of the molecules. Besides the material research in the field of thermoelectrics, the way from a material to a functional thermoelectric (TE) module comes alongside additional challenges. Thus, comprehension and optimization of the properties and the design of a TE module are important tasks. In this work, different geometry optimization strategies to reach maximum power output or maximum conversion efficiency are applied and the resulting performances of various modules and respective materials are analyzed. A Bi2Te3-based module, a half-Heusler-based module, and an oxide-based module are characterized via FEM simulations. By this, a deviation of optimum power output and optimum conversion efficiency in dependence of the diversity of thermoelectric materials is found. Additionally, for all modules, the respective fluxes of entropy and charge as well as the corresponding fluxes of thermal and electrical energy within the thermolegs are shown. The full understanding and enhancement of the performance of a TE module may be further improved. 相似文献
