Multisample probe for fast-atom bombardment / mass spectrometry

An inexpensive multisample fast-atom bombardment (FAB) probe assembly was designed for high-throughput analysis of samples on a VG ZAB-SE mass spectrometer. The system consists of a vacuum lock system and a FAB probe whose tip contains five or more sample wells. The probe enters the mass spectrometer source region perpendicular to the secondary ion beam axis, The probe is maintained at high voltage on contact with a spring clip attached to the screen plate of the source block. Sample throughput with the multisample probe is twice that of a coaxial probe, with about twice the sensitivity and no sample cross contamination.     

Etude par spectrométrie de masse de la fragmentation des cyclopentane-triols-1,2,3, des cyclopentane-tétrols et des cyclopentane-pentols

The mass spectra of the three cyclopentane-1,2,3-triols, six cyclopentane-tetrols and four cyclopentane-pentols stereoisomers have been studied. Complex processes, especially regarding the H₂O eliminations, were detected by extensive deuterium labelling.     

Synthesis of aminoquinolone derivatives

The synthesis of 3-amino-7-chloro-1-ethyl-6-fluoro-4(1H)quinolinone derivatives is described. These were investigated for their antibacterial activity.

The Three‐Dimensional Coordination Polymers M[(CH₃SO₂)₂N], where M is Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium (Isotypic Structures for M = K, Rb) Low‐temperature X‐ray crystal structures are reported for KA (monoclinic, space group P2₁/c, Z′ = 1), RbA (isotypic and isostructural with KA), and CsA (monoclinic, P2₁/n, Z′ = 1), where A^— denotes the anion obtained by deprotonation of the strong nitrogen acid (MeSO₂)₂NH. In KA and RbA, the anion is distorted into a rare C₁ conformation, whereas the standard C₂ conformation is retained in the cesium complex. The structures consist of three‐dimensional coordination networks, in which each cation adopts an irregular (O₆N)‐heptacoordination by forming close contacts to one (O, N)‐chelating, one (O, O)‐chelating and three κ¹O‐bonding ligands; however, the coordination number for Cs⁺ is effectively increased to 8 by a very short Cs···Cs contact distance of 422.5 pm. The crystal packings of the isotypic compounds KA and RbA display lamellar layer substructures that involve six independent ligand‐metal bonds and comprise an internal cation lamella and peripheral regions built up from anion monolayers; the 3D framework is completed by one independent M—O bond cross‐linking the layer substructures. In contrast, CsA features anion monolayers that intercalate planar zigzag chains of cations (Cs···Cs alternatingly 422.5 and 487.5 pm, Cs···Cs···Cs 135.7°), whereby each chain is surrounded and coordinated by four anion stacks and each anion stack connects two cation chains. All structures exhibit close C—H···A interanion contacts consistent with weak hydrogen bonding.     

Proteomic analysis of simulated occupational jet fuel exposure in the lung

We analyzed protein expression in the cytosolic fraction prepared from whole lung tissue in male Swiss-Webster mice exposed 1 h/day for seven days to aerosolized JP-8 jet fuel at concentrations of 1000 and 2500 mg/m3, simulating military occupational exposure. Lung cytosol samples were solubilized and separated via large scale, high resolution two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) and gel patterns scanned, digitized and processed for statistical analysis. Significant quantitative and qualitative changes in tissue cytosol proteins resulted from jet fuel exposure. Several of the altered proteins were identified by peptide mass fingerprinting, confirmed by sequence tag analysis, and related to impaired protein synthetic machinery, toxic/metabolic stress and detoxification systems, ultrastructural damage, and functional responses to CO2 handling, acid-base homeostasis and fluid secretion. These results demonstrate a significant but comparatively moderate JP-8 effect on protein expression and corroborate previous morphological and biochemical evidence. Further molecular marker development and mechanistic inferences from these observations await proteomic analysis of whole tissue homogenates and other cell compartment, i.e., mitochondria, microsomes, and nuclei of lung and other targets.     

Synthesis of Unsubstituted and 4,4′-Substituted Oligobipyridines as Ligand Strands for Helicate Self-Assembly

A general strategy for the synthesis of oligobipyridine ligands 2 – 5 containing from two to five 2,2′-bipyridine subunits, for helical metal complexes is described (sec Scheme). Both the unsubstituted parent strands ( a series) as well as their derivatives bearing fester or amide functions in the 4,4′-positions of the bipyridine moieties ( b – d series) have been obtained.     

Tris(arylmethyl) derivatives of 1,3,5-trimethoxy- and 1,3,5-triethylbenzene

The hexasubstituted benzenes 7 and 9b were synthesized starting from 3 and 8b, respectively. In the crystal, 9b adopts the fully alternated conformation with all arylmethyl groups oriented syn.     

ETUDE DE LA FRAGMENTATION DE N-ARYL ET DE N-ALKYL AMINOCETONES EN SPECTROMETRIE DE MASSE

A Comparison of the chemical ionisation and elctron-impact mass spectra of alkyl and aryl aminoketones has bee carried out. This has revealed the particular stabilization of the N-aryl grops in all cases.
