Synthesis of cephalosporins carrying isoxazolyl acetamido and related side chains

Starting from 3,5-dimethylisoxazole the carboxylic acids I and V, the amino acids VIII (L-) and IX (D-), and the ureido acids X (L-) and XI (D-) were prepared, which were used for the synthesis of the new cephalosporins XVIIb, XXa-c (L-), and XXIb (D-). Thein vitro antibacterial activity of these semi-synthetic antibiotics was studied. Lattice-point examples for a question of Erdős

Here we establish a set of eight points in general position in the plane, i.e. no three on a line, no four on a circle, and they determine 7 distinct distances, so that, thei-th distance occursi times,i = 1, 2, , 7. The points are embedded in a triangular net, and the distances are not ordered by size or in any other way. We shall show that some known and unknown examples forn < 8 with the above properties may also be lattice points of a similar net.Research (partially) supported by the Hungarian National Foundation for Scientific Research (OTKA) grant, no. 1808.     

Diels-Alder chemistry on alkene functionalized films

A substrate-independent method has been devised for ring formation at solid surfaces. This entails the aminolysis reaction of allylamine with maleic anhydride pulsed plasma polymer films to yield terminal alkene groups at the surface. Subsequent exposure to 1,3-cyclohexadiene leads to a Diels-Alder type (4 + 2) cycloaddition reaction to give a mixture of endo- and exo-bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-2-ene rings.     

Gravimetric separation of titanium and zirconium from Niobium with Phenylacetylhydroxamic acid

Phenylacetylhydroxamic acid is used to separate titanium and zirconium from niobium in an oxalate medium at pH 6.5–7.5 in presence of ammonium chloride at room temperature. The method is accurate when the ratio of (TiO₂ + ZrO₂) : Nb₂O₅ is 10 : 1 to 1 : 1 ; when the niobium concentration is higher, reprecipitation is necessary. Tantalum, citrate, tartrate, lactic acid, EDTA, and a large excess of oxalate interfere.     

An integrated microfluidic device for influenza and other genetic analyses

An integrated microfluidic device capable of performing a variety of genetic assays has been developed as a step towards building systems for widespread dissemination. The device integrates fluidic and thermal components such as heaters, temperature sensors, and addressable valves to control two nanoliter reactors in series followed by an electrophoretic separation. This combination of components is suitable for a variety of genetic analyses. As an example, we have successfully identified sequence-specific hemagglutinin A subtype for the A/LA/1/87 strain of influenza virus. The device uses a compact design and mass production technologies, making it an attractive platform for a variety of widely disseminated applications.     

Synthesis and characterization of cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), palladium(II) and dioxouranium(VI) complexes of the antipyrine Schiff base of 3-formylsalicylic acid

A new Schiff base has been synthesized from 4-aminoantipyrine and 3-formylsalicylic acid. The ligand has a dianionic tetradentate compartmental OONO donor system. The cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II) and dioxouranium(VI) complexes exist in phenolato-bridged dinuclear species, while palladium(II) gives a mononuclear complex with free –COOH groups. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, i.r., u.v.-vis, thermal and magnetic measurements.     

Ternary iron(II) complex with an emissive imidazopyridine arm from Schiff base cyclizations and its oxidative DNA cleavage activity

The ternary iron(II) complex [Fe(L')(L")](PF6)3(1) as a synthetic model for the bleomycins, where L' and L" are formed from metal-mediated cyclizations of N,N'-(2-hydroxypropane-1,3-diyl)bis(pyridine-2-aldimine)(L), is synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. In the six-coordinate iron(ii) complex, ligands L' and L" show tetradentate and bidentate chelating modes of bonding. Ligand L' is formed from an intramolecular attack of the alcoholic OH group of L to one imine moiety leading to the formation of a stereochemically constrained five-membered ring. Ligand L" which is formed from an intermolecular reaction involving one imine moiety of L and pyridine-2-carbaldehyde has an emissive cationic imidazopyridine pendant arm. The complex binds to double-stranded DNA in the minor groove giving a Kapp value of 4.1 x 10(5) M(-1) and displays oxidative cleavage of supercoiled DNA in the presence of H2O2 following a hydroxyl radical pathway. The complex also shows photo-induced DNA cleavage activity on UV light exposure involving formation of singlet oxygen as the reactive species.     

Reactions of titanium(IV) isopropoxide with aliphatic and aromatic hydroxy esters,part I. 5-, 6-, 7- and 8-coordinate titanium(IV) complexes

Summary Reactions of titanium(IV) isopropoxide with ethyl 1-hydroxycyclohexylacetate, ethyl 2-hydroxy-2-arylpropionate, ethyl 2-hydroxy-2-arylbutyrate and ethyl 2-hydroxy-2-arylhydrocinnamate have been studied in dry benzene in different molar ratios under strictly anhydrous conditions. The Ti(OPr-i)₄-_nL_n type compounds, where L = hydroxy ester and n = 1 to 4, have been isolated and characterised by elemental analysis, molecular weight, i.r. and n.m.r. spectral studies. These products may be distilled unchanged under reduced pressure.Reprints of this are not available.
