Complexing effects in the solvent extraction of thallium(I) 2-mercaptobenzothiazole

Studies of the extraction of thallum(l) from aqueous solution in the absence and presence of aqueous complexing agents into chloroform containing 2-mercaptobenzothiazole are described. Fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, thiocyanair, cyanide, and sulfate were employed as aqueous complexing agents. A number of the participating species were identified and association constants are estimated.     

Electro-optic scattering from nitrocellulose solutions

Measurements have been made of the light intensity scattered from dilute solutions of a sample of nitrocellulose ($\text{M}{}_{\mathrm{w}}\text{= 460,000}$) in acetone, both in the absence and presence of a.c. and d.c. electric fields. In an earlier study, owing to a mathematical slip and a false interpretation of an experimental parameter, other workers [5] interpreted similar measurements in terms of a freely rotating polar chain model. It is shown herein that this cannot be so and that the molecules of nitrocellulose of this order of molecular weight and in this type of solvent are better regarded as extremely stiff and extended.     

Synthesis of 2•,3•-Dideoxy-3•-<Emphasis Type="Italic">C</Emphasis>-hydroxymethylcytidine Phosphonomethyl Derivatives

Phosphonomethyl substituted 2?,3?-Dideoxy-3?-C-hydroxymethylcytidines have been synthesized and evaluated for their anti HIV-1 activities. The sugar moiety was synthesized starting from (S)-5-hydroxymethylfuran-2-(5H)-one using photocatalyzed addition of methanol. Reduction of the lactone, condensation with silylated 4-methoxy-2(1H)pyrimidinone, followed by phosphonomethylation and deprotection gave the title compounds. The compounds were tested for inhibition of HIV-1 activity but did not show any significant antiviral activity.     

Expanding the hydride chemistry: antiperovskites A3MO4H (A = Rb,Cs; M = Mo,W) introducing the transition oxometalate hydrides

The four compounds A₃MO₄H (A = Rb, Cs; M = Mo, W) are introduced as the first members of the new material class of the transition oxometalate hydrides. The compounds are accessible via a thermal synthesis route with carefully controlled conditions. Their crystal structures were solved by neutron diffraction of the deuterated analogues. Rb₃MoO₄D, Cs₃MoO₄D and Cs₃WO₄D crystallize in the antiperovskite-like K₃SO₄F-structure type, while Rb₃WO₄D adopts a different orthorhombic structure. ²H MAS NMR, Raman spectroscopy and elemental analysis prove the abundance of hydride ions next to oxometalate ions and experimental findings are supported by quantum chemical calculations. The tetragonal phases are direct and wide band gap semiconductors arising from hydride states, whereas Rb₃WO₄H shows a unique, peculiar valence band structure dominated by hydride states.

The synthesis, structures and electronic properties of the first four heteroanionic compounds containing both hydride and transition oxometalate ions are reported.     

Acid‐Catalyzed Oxidative Radical Addition of Ketones to Olefins

Based on a mechanistic study, we have discovered a Brønsted acid catalyzed formation of ketone radicals. This is believed to proceed via thermally labile alkenyl peroxides formed in situ from ketones and hydroperoxides. The discovery could be utilized to develop a multicomponent radical addition of unactivated ketones and tert‐butyl hydroperoxide to olefins. The resulting γ‐peroxyketones are synthetically useful intermediates that can be further transformed into 1,4‐diketones, homoaldol products, and alkyl ketones. A one‐pot reaction yielding a pharmaceutically active pyrrole is also described.

Anomalous lattice response at the Mott transition in a quasi-2D organic conductor

Discontinuous changes of the lattice parameters at the Mott metal-insulator transition are detected by high-resolution dilatometry on deuterated crystals of the layered organic conductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)Cu[N(CN)(2)]Br. The uniaxial expansivities uncover a striking and unexpected anisotropy, notably a zero effect along the in-plane c axis along which the electronic interactions are relatively strong. A huge thermal expansion anomaly is observed near the end point of the first-order transition line enabling us to explore the critical behavior with very high sensitivity. The analysis yields critical fluctuations with an exponent alpha approximately 0.8+/-0.15 at odds with the novel criticality recently proposed for these materials [Kagawa et al., Nature (London) 436, 534 (2005)]. Our data suggest an intricate role of the lattice degrees of freedom in the Mott transition for the present materials.
