A straightforward method of creating a bifunctional support possessing pre-defined ratios of amine and chloromethyl groups based upon a controlled conversion of standard Merrifield resin is presented. It avoids the extensive optimisation of reactant concentrations and reaction conditions required by existing methods. Furthermore, it avoids increases in the spacer/linker length that lead to detrimental reductions in the rigidity of the grafted layer. High-resolution soft x-ray differential interference contrast (DIC) imaging was demonstrated through the use of a single-element objective, the XOR pattern, in a full-field soft x-ray microscope. DIC images of the magnetic domains in a 59 nm thick amorphous Gd25Fe75 layer were obtained and magnetic phase contributions were directly imaged. With its elemental, chemical, and magnetic specificity, compatibility with various sample environments, and ease of implementation, we expect this soft x-ray DIC technique to become one of the standard modes of operation for existing full-field soft x-ray microscopes. 相似文献

The hypothesis that sounds produced by odontocetes can debilitate fish was examined. The effects of simulated odontocete pulsed signals on three species of fish commonly preyed on by odontocetes were examined, exposing three individuals of each species as well as groups of four fish to a high-frequency click of a bottlenose dolphin [peak frequency (PF) 120 kHz, 213-dB peak-to-peak exposure level (EL)], a midfrequency click modeled after a killer whale's signal (PF 55 kHz, 208-dB EL), and a low-frequency click (PF 18 kHz, 193-dB EL). Fish were held in a 50-cm diameter net enclosure immediately in front of a transducer where their swimming behavior, orientation, and balance were observed with two video cameras. Clicks were presented at constant rates and in graded sweeps simulating a foraging dolphin's "terminal buzz." No measurable change in behavior was observed in any of the fish for any signal type or pulse modulation rate, despite the fact that clicks were at or near the maximum source levels recorded for odontocetes. The correlation properties of speckle fields are studied for general paraxial systems. The previous studies on lateral and longitudinal speckle size for the case of free-space propagation (Fresnel transform) are generalized to the case of the linear canonical transform. We study the abelian sandpile growth model, where n particles are added at the origin on a stable background configuration in ? d . Any site with at least 2d particles then topples by sending one particle to each neighbor. We find that with constant background height h≤2d?2, the diameter of the set of sites that topple has order n 1/d . This was previously known only for h<d. Our proof uses a strong form of the least action principle for sandpiles, and a novel method of background modification. We can extend this diameter bound to certain backgrounds in which an arbitrarily high fraction of sites have height 2d?1. On the other hand, we show that if the background height 2d?2 is augmented by 1 at an arbitrarily small fraction of sites chosen independently at random, then adding finitely many particles creates an explosion (a sandpile that never stabilizes). 相似文献

We describe a novel single atom detector that uses the high electric field surrounding a charged single-walled carbon nanotube to attract and subsequently field-ionize neutral atoms. A theoretical study of the field-ionization tunneling rates for atomic trajectories in the attractive potential near a nanowire shows that a broadly applicable, high spatial resolution, low-power, neutral-atom detector with nearly 100% efficiency is realizable with present-day technology. Calculations also show that the system can provide the first opportunity to study quantized conductance phenomena when detecting cold neutral atoms with mean velocities less than 15 m/s. 相似文献

The dynamic effects of low-frequency biasing on spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) were studied in human subjects under various signal conditions. Results showed a combined suppression and modulation of the SOAE amplitudes at high bias tone levels. Ear-canal acoustic spectra demonstrated a reduction in SOAE amplitude and growths of sidebands while increasing the bias tone level. These effects varied depending on the relative strength of the bias tone to a particular SOAE. The SOAE magnitudes were suppressed when the cochlear partition was biased in both directions. This quasi-static modulation pattern showed a shape consistent with the first derivative of a sigmoid-shaped nonlinear function. In the time domain, the SOAE amplitudes were modulated with the instantaneous phase of the bias tone. For each biasing cycle, the SOAE envelope showed two peaks each corresponded to a zero crossing of the bias tone. The temporal modulation patterns varied systematically with the level and frequency of the bias tone. These dynamic behaviors of the SOAEs are consistent with the shifting of the operating point along the nonlinear transducer function of the cochlea. The results suggest that the nonlinearity in cochlear hair cell transduction may be involved in the generation of SOAEs. 相似文献
