REDOR with a relative full-echo reference

REDOR and REDOR-like 13C[19F] and 2H[19F] NMR experiments have been performed on lyophilized whole cells of Staphylococcus aureus. The bacteria were grown to maturity on media containing L-[13C(3)]alanine or L-[methyl-d(3)]alanine, and then complexed with the 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative of chloroeremomycin, an analogue of the widely used antibiotic, vancomycin. The position of the 19F of the drug bound in the bacterial cell wall was determined relative to L-alanine 13C and 2H labels in the peptidoglycan peptide stem that was closest to the fluorinated biphenyl moiety of the drug. These determinations were made by dipolar recoupling methods that do not require an absolute measurement of the REDOR full echo (the signal observed without rotor-synchronized dephasing pulses) of the labels in the peptide stem.     

A Mössbauer study of amorphous Fe40Ni40B20

Amorphous Fe₄₀Ni₄₀B₂₀ (VITROVAC 0040) alloy has been investigated using ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer Spectroscopy. The Curie temperature T_c is found to be well defined and is 695 ± 1 K. The quadrupole splitting just above T_c is 0.64 mm sec^?1. The crystallization temperature is 698 ± 2 K, close to but definitely above T_c. The average hyperfine field H_eff(T) of the glassy state shows a temperature dependence of $\text{H}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>eff</mtext>}}\text{(0)[1 ? B}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>3</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{(T/T}{}_{\mathrm{c}}\text{)}{}^{\mathrm{<mtext>3</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{? C}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>5</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{(T/T}{}_{\mathrm{c}}\text{)}{}^{\mathrm{<mtext>5</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{? …]}$ indicative of the existence of spin wave excitations. The values of $\text{B}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>3</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$ and $\text{C}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>5</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$ are found to be 0.40 and 0.06, respectively, for T/T_c ? 0.72. At temperatures close to T_c, H_eff(T) varies as (1 ? T/T_c)^β where β is one of the critical exponents and its value is found to be 0.29 ± 0.02.     

A generalized treatment of segment densities in linear and branched random-flight chains

A new, generalized formulation is presented for the density of segments about the center of mass in random-flight chains having branched architectures. Numerical results are obtained for linear chains and it is observed that the results attain the asymptotic limit for n=∞ in the same way as the distribution of the radii of gyration.     

Structure of protoveratrine C,a new alkaloid from provoveratrine

Single-crystal $\text{X}$-ray analysis has established that provoveratrine C, a third tetraester component of proveratrine, is protoverine 3-(2′$\text{S}$,3′$\text{R}$-2′,3′-dihydroxy-2′-methylbutyrate 6,7-diacetate 15-(2′$\text{R}$)-methylbutyrate.
