The collapse of Langmuir monolayers of poly(vinyl stearate) (PVS) at the air-water interface has been investigated by combined measurements of the surface pressure-area isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to gain out-of-plane structural information on collapsed films transferred onto a solid substrate by a modified version of the inverse Langmuir-Schaefer deposition method. At high areas per monomer repeat unit, BAM imaging revealed that the films are heterogeneous, with large solidlike domains (25-200 mum in diameter) coexisting with liquidlike domains. Upon film compression, the domains coalesced to form a homogeneous monolayer before the film collapsed at constant pressure, forming irreversible three-dimensional (3D) structures. BAM images showed that two 3D structures coexisted: buckles of varying width extending across the surface and perpendicular to the direction of the compression and dotted islandlike structures. Upon expansion, the film fractured and both 3D protrusions persisted, explaining the marked hysteresis recorded in the Langmuir isotherms. Experiments with AFM confirmed the 3D nature of both protrusions and revealed that many buckles contain substructures corresponding to narrow buckles whose heights are a multiple of a single bilayer. Additionally, many multilayer islands with diameters spanning from 0.2 mum to over 3.5 mum were characterized by varying heights between 2 nm and up to over 50 nm. The key to the formation of the irreversible 3D structures is the presence of large inhomogeneities in the PVS monolayer, and a generalized phenomenological model is proposed to explain the collapse observed. 相似文献

The chemical etching of silicon using HF-HNO3 mixtures is a widely used process in the processing of silicon wafers for microelectronic or photovoltaic applications. The control of the etch bath composition is the necessary condition for an effective bath utilization, for the replenishment of the consumed acids, and to maintain a certain etch rate. The present paper describes two methods for the total analysis of the individual etch bath constituents HF, HNO3, and H2SiF6. Both methods start with an aqueous acid-base titration determining the total acid concentration and the concentration of H2SiF6. The first method is an acid-base titration using a 0.1 mol L−1 methanolic solution of cyclohexylamine (CHA) as non-aqueous titrant to determine the content of nitric acid. Then, the amount of hydrofluoric acid is calculated from the difference between the total acid and nitric acid content. The second method is based on the determination of the total fluoride concentration using a fluoride ion-selective electrode (F-ISE). The content of hydrofluoric acid is obtained from the difference between the total fluoride content and the amount of fluoride bound as H2SiF6. The effect of surface condition on the photoalignment of light-induced methyl red (MR) adsorption phenomena on various substrates based on azo dye-doped liquid crystals is investigated. The results show that the polar surface energy determines the initiation of MR adsorption phenomena. The surface polarity energy of different substrates, which are modulated by oxygen plasma treatment (OPT), is further examined using the sessile drop method. The results also indicate that the uniformity and efficiency of MR adsorption can be enhanced by OPT. Light intensity influences the MR adsorption rate. In the photovoltaic industry the etching of silicon in HF/HNO3 solutions is a decisive process for cleaning wafer surfaces or to produce certain surface morphologies like polishing or texturization. With regard to cost efficiency, a maximal utilisation of etch baths in combination with highest quality and accuracy is strived. To provide an etch bath control realised by a replenishment with concentrated acids the main constituents of these HF/HNO3 etch solutions including the reaction product H2SiF6 have to be analysed. Two new methods for the determination of the total fluoride content in an acidic etch solution based on the precipitation titration with La(NO3)3 are presented within this paper. The first method bases on the proper choice of the reaction conditions, since free fluoride ions have to be liberated from HF and H2SiF6 at the same time to be detected by a fluoride ion-selective electrode (F-ISE). Therefore, the sample is adjusted to a pH of 8 for total cleavage of the SiF62− anion and titrated in absence of buffers. In a second method, the titration with La(NO3)3 is followed by a change of the pH-value using a HF resistant glass-electrode. Both methods provide consistent values, whereas the analysis is fast and accurate, and thus, applicable for industrial process control. 相似文献

In this Article, we study the development of semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots of average diameter less than 2 nm) directly conjugated to a transporter protein human serum albumin (HSA) as fluorescent biological labels. F?rster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the amino acid tryptophan (Trp214) to quantum dot in HSA is monitored to follow the local and global changes in the protein structure during thermal unfolding and refolding processes. Vitamin K(1) is a fat-soluble vitamin required for the gamma-carboxylation of vitamin K-dependent proteins. Recent work has suggested an important role for vitamin K(1) in bone health beyond its more established function in the control and regulation of blood coagulation. However, current UK recommended intakes do not reflect this recent evidence. The use of stable isotopes provides a powerful tool to investigate vitamin K kinetics, turnover and absorption in man, although published methods have reported difficulties in the extraction and analysis of isotope ratios of vitamin K in human plasma. In this paper, we report a new methodology for the extraction and measurement of isotope ratios in vitamin K(1). Sample clean-up is achieved with liquid-liquid extraction, enzyme hydrolysis with lipase and cholesterol esterase, and solid-phase extraction. Isotopic analysis of the pentafluoropropionyl derivative of vitamin K(1) is performed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The limit of quantitation is equivalent to at least 0.3 nmol/L and the method is demonstrated to be linear over a range of enrichments. This work demonstrated a facile route for the synthesis of poly(3,5-dimethyl aniline) nanofibers by polymerization of 3,5-dimethyl aniline using Pd-acetate as the oxidant. The reduction of Pd ion is accompanied by oxidative polymerization of 3,5-dimethyl aniline, leading to a metal-polymer composite material. Palladium nanoparticles (approximately 2 nm) are uniformly distributed throughout the polymer that makes the composite material a unique morphology. The resultant composite material was characterized by means of different techniques. IR and Raman spectra provide the information on the chemical structure of the polymer. TEM images show the morphology of the polymer and size of the metal particles. 相似文献
