Luminescence Properties of Tb-Doped Yttrium Disilicate Prepared by the Sol–Gel Method

A sol–gel method for the synthesis of nanosized powders of yttrium disilicate doped with Tb^{3 +} is presented. The influence of grain size and annealing temperature on the structure and luminescence properties of the materials obtained has been investigated. The preparation of glass-ceramic composite has been also described. The effect of incorporating the nanocrystals into sol–gel silica glasses on their physicochemical properties has been shown and discussed. A lack of influence of the annealing above 1300°C on the lifetimes measured for the nanocrystals embedded in the glass, as compared to the Y₂Si₂O₇:Tb^{3 +} powders, has been observed.     

Synthesis and polymerization of multiallyl monomer in matrix of poly(methacryloyl chloride)

By reacting poly(methacryloyl chloride) (PMKC) with allyl amine, a multiallyl monomer in PMKC matrix has been obtained. Free-radical polymerization of multiallyl monomer in diluted solutions at a concentration of 12 g/L multiallyl monomer occurs partly along ordered allyl units in the matrix and results in ladder-type branched polymers. The polymers obtained are soluble in alcohols, DMF, DMSO and have unreacted allyl double bonds. The structures of multiallyl monomer and homopolymer have been found on the basis of elemental analysis, IR and ¹H-NMR spectra and an examination of the products of hydrolysis. The effect of the reaction of degradative chain transfer on the structure of the polymer obtained has been discussed.     

Existence and uniqueness for nonlinear boundary value problems in kinetic theory

A boundary value problem for the stationary nonlinear Boltzmann equation in a slab has been examined in a weightedL space. It has been proved that the problem possesses a unique solution for boundary data small enough. The proof is based on the implicit function theorem. It has also been shown that for the linearized problem the Fredholm alternative applies.     

Extremality and the global Markov property II: The global markov property for non-FKG maximal Gibbs measures

We give a condition on a Gibbs measure for an attractive Markov specification, which assures extremality and the global Markov property. As an example of application we consider the class of attractive Markov specifications defined on a compact configuration space over a two-dimensional lattice by the interaction Hamiltonians (assumed to have a finite set of periodic ground configurations) satisfying Peierl's condition. We prove that each extremal Gibbs measure for such a specification, at sufficiently low temperature, has the global Markov property.On leave of absence from the Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Wrocaw, Poland.     

Ab initio study of the NMR shielding constants and spin-spin coupling constants in cyclopropene

Summary Ab initio calculations of parameters which characterize the NMR spectrum are presented for the cyclopropene molecule. The London orbitals CHF (or GIAO-CHF, Gauge-Independent Atomic Orbital Coupled Hartree-Fock) results for the shielding constants are in good agreement with the experimental data, accurately determined, and with otherab initio values. The calculations of the NMR spin-spin coupling constants have been performed using the Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock (MC TDHF) approach. Different basis sets and MC SCF wavefunctions were used to estimate the accuracy of the results. Good agreement is obtained with the coupling constants estimated using the available experimental data.Dedicated to Professor Werner Kutzelnigg on the occasion of his 60th birthday     

9-acetoxyanthracene derivatives. Part VIII. The mechanism of degradation of 9-acetoxy-10-arylanthracenes to anthraquinone

The mechanism of degradation of 9-acetoxy-10-arylanthracenes to anthraquinose with the use of HNO₃ in AcOH has been reported. This was proved by way of example on 9-acetoxy-10-(4′-acetoxyphenyl )anthracene (1) by means of separation and identification of intermediate products $\text{2}$, $\text{3}$ and $\text{4}$.     

Structural assignment of organotin hydrides containing the oxazoline ligand

A series of triorganotin hydrides and diorganotin dihydrides containing the optically active 2-(4-isopropyl-2-oxazolinyl)-5-phenyl ligand have been characterized by means of the multinuclear low-temperature NMR investigations, the results of which are discussed. In the corresponding organotin hydrides values of the ¹J(¹H-^117/119Sn) couplings appeared to be temperature dependent, supporting an axial/equatorial position of the hydrogen attached to the tin.     

A 13-membered crown ether with an azoxy subunit in the macrocycle: Synthesis and X-ray structure

The presented azoxy compound is an example of a new crown ether analogue. It has been synthesized by the reduction of an open chain dinitro compound with stannite under strongly alkaline conditions. A method for the separation of the azo and azoxy compounds formed simultaneously has been proposed. The structures of two crystallographically independent molecules of compound2 have been determined. In spite of the small size of the macroring in compound2, the phenyl residues around the azoxy group have atrans orientation. Chiral molecular glass: synthesis and characterization of enantiomerically pure thiophene-based [7]helicene

Synthesis of thiophene-based [7]helicenes, which are functionalized for both design of organic chiral glasses with strong chiroptical properties and for further homologation to higher [n]helicenes, is reported. The key synthetic transformations are kinetic resolution of the intermediate diketone and the annelation step forming the center benzene ring by means of an intramolecular McMurry reaction. Based upon X-ray crystallographic determinations of the absolute configurations for (+)-enantiomers of the diketone and the [7]helicene, stereochemical correlation between the (R) axial chirality of the diketone and the (M) helical chirality of the [7]helicene is established. One such enantiopure trimethylsilyl-substituted [7]helicene possesses enchanced chiroptical properties and forms a chiral molecular glass.
