On the tricritical point on the (p,T)-phase diagram of Sn2P2S6 crystals

Using studies of the temperature dependence of the acoustic wave velocity at high hydrostatic pressures, a tricritical point where second-order phase transitions change to first-order ones was experimentally revealed on the pressure–temperature phase diagram of Sn₂P₂S₆ crystals. The behavior of the acoustic wave velocity is explained in the framework of mean-field theory.     

Methods for correlating T1rho and FID components in wideline 1H NMR studies of motionally heterogeneous polymer systems

We address the problem of correlating the observed FID and T_1ρ components in wideline ¹H relaxation measurements of motionally heterogeneous polymers, and show that different methods of data treatment can highlight different aspects of the correlations present. For a sample of polypropylene we find that the T_1ρ relaxation behaviour is driven by relaxation associated with the intermediate FID component, which strongly suggests a motionally inhomogeneous amorphous region in the sample.     

Zn2+-dependent peptide nucleic acids probes

Binding of bis-picolylamine-naphthalene diimide-peptide nucleic acid conjugates to complementary DNA is strongly dependent upon Zn2+; ultimately, hybridization is switched ON in the presence muM Zn2+.     

Dimeric Capsules Formed by Tetra‐CMPO Derivatives of (Thia)Calix[4]arenes

Thiacalix[4]arene 2 , calix[4]arene 3 a and its tetraether fixed in the cone conformation 3 b form homo‐ and heterodimeric capsules in apolar solvents, which are held together by a seam of NH???O=P hydrogen bonds between carbamoylmethyl phospine oxide functions attached to their wide rim. Their internal volume of ～370 ų requires the inclusion of a suitable guest. Although neutral molecules such as adamantane (derivatives) or tetraethylammonium cations form kinetically stable complexes (¹H‐ and ³¹P‐time scale), the included solvent is rapidly exchanged. The internal mobility of the included tetraethylammonium cation is distinctly higher (ΔG=42.5 and 49.7 kJ mol^?1 for 3 a and 3 b ) than that for similar capsules of tetraurea calix[4]arenes 1 . Mixtures of 1 with 2 , 3 a , or 3 b contain only the two homodimers but the heterodimerization occurs with the tetraloop tetraurea 6 , which cannot form homodimers. Two dimers with cationic guests ( 2? (C₅H₅)₂Co⁺ ?2 and 3 a? Et₃NH⁺ ? H₂O ?3 a ) were confirmed by single‐crystal X‐ray analysis.     

Aqua(nitrilo­triacetato)­(1,10‐phenanthroline)iron(III) monohydrate: a seven‐coordinate iron(III) complex

Reaction of 1,10‐phenanthroline (phen) with iron trichloride in the presence of sodium nitrilo­tri­acetate (NTA) resulted in the formation of red crystals of the title complex, [Fe(C₆H₆NO₆)(C₁₂H₈N₂)(H₂O)]·H₂O. The Fe atom has a distorted capped trigonal prismatic coordination comprised of one tetradentate NTA, one bidentate phen molecule and a water mol­ecule. Intermolecular O—H?O hydrogen bonds link the mol­ecules into infinite chains. The chains are crosslinked by hydrogen bonds involving the solvent water mol­ecule, leading to an infinite ladder packing mode.     

Pimprinols A–C,from the terrestrial actinomycete,Streptomyces sp.

A Streptomyces sp. Lv3-13, isolated from the rhizosphere soil of the plant Mespilus germanica, has yielded three new pimprinine derivatives, named pimprinols A–C (1–3) and the unknown (2-aminophenyl)(2-ethyloxazol-5-yl) methanone (4) along with the known compounds 2-ethyl oxazole pimprinine and 2-propyl oxazole pimprinine. The structures of the compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic methods including UV, HR-ESIMS and 1D, 2D NMR data. Compounds 1–4 were screened for antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities.     

Crotonic,cynnamic, and propiolic acids motifs in the synthesis of thiopyrano[2,3-d][1,3]thiazoles via hetero-Diels–Alder reaction and related tandem processes

Various novel thiopyrano[2,3-d][1,3]thiazol-2-one-6-carboxylic acids derivatives were synthesized in 54–86% yields via hetero-Diels–Alder reactions and related acylation-based tandem processes of 5-arylidene-4-thioxo-2-thiazolidinones with crotonic, propiolic, and cynnamic acids derivatives. Stereo- and regioselectivity of cycloaddition were investigated.     

Nanoparticle directed domain orientation in thin films of asymmetric block copolymers

We investigated the thin film morphology of two different asymmetric block copolymers (BCP), polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) and poly(n-pentyl methacrylate)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PPMA-b-PMMA), loaded with pre-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles (NP). The chemical composition of the BCP constituents determines the strength of the interaction between polymer chains and nanoparticles. In the case of NP/PS-b-P4VP system, the nanoparticles interact preferentially with the P4VP block and hence localize selectively in the P4VP cylindrical microdomains. However, for the NP/PPMA-b-PMMA system, the nanoparticles have no significant preference for the copolymer blocks and segregate at the polymer/substrate interface. Interestingly, this changes the effective substrate surface energy and hence leads to a remarkable change in domain orientation from parallel to perpendicular with respect to the substrate. These results clearly demonstrate the importance of both enthalpic and entropic factors which determine spatial distribution of NP in BCP films and influence domain orientation.
