The amino acid sequence was analysed by DADI mass spectrometry in simple oligopeptides and in mixtures containing two or three peptides.     

Multicomponent coupling reactions for organic synthesis: chemoselective reactions with amide-aldehyde mixtures

The acid-catalyzed condensation chemistry of simple amides and aldehydes provides a highly prolific source of diverse reactants for irreversible follow-up reactions. Amide-aldehyde mixtures have been successfully employed in multicomponent syntheses of N-acyl alpha-amino acids (via palladium-catalyzed amidocarbonylation) and various cyclohexene, cyclohexadiene, and benzene derivatives (via the amide-aldehyde-dienophile (AAD) reaction).     

Alkaloids from marine organisms. Part 8: Isolation of bisdemethylaaptamine and bisdemethylaaptamine-9-O-sulfate from an Indonesian Aaptos sp. marine sponge

Bisdemethylaaptamine (6), a proposed biosynthetic precursor of the aaptamines has been isolated from an Aaptos sp. marine sponge harvested off the Indonesian coast, and its identity confirmed by comparison of its spectral data with that of synthetic material. Bisdemethylaaptamine-9-O-sulfate (7) was also isolated from the same source. This is the first report of a sulfated aaptamine.     

Short-chain reactive probes as tools to unravel the Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum sensing regulon

In recent years, the world has seen a troubling increase in antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens. In order to provide alternative strategies to combat bacterial infections, it is crucial deepen our understanding into the mechanisms that pathogens use to thrive in complex environments. Most bacteria use sophisticated chemical communication systems to sense their population density and coordinate gene expression in a collective manner, a process that is termed “quorum sensing” (QS). The human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa uses several small molecules to regulate QS, and one of them is N-butyryl-l-homoserine lactone (C₄-HSL). Using an activity-based protein profiling (ABPP) strategy, we designed biomimetic probes with a photoreactive group and a ‘click’ tag as an analytical handle. Using these probes, we have identified previously uncharacterized proteins that are part of the P. aeruginosa QS network, and we uncovered an additional role for this natural autoinducer in the virulence regulon of P. aeruginosa, through its interaction with PhzB1/2 that results in inhibition of pyocyanin production.

Short-chain reactive probes can be used as tools to shed new light on virulence mechanisms in bacterial pathogens.     

The electronic structure of small lithium clusters

Ab initio molecular orbital calculations using the STO-6G and STO6-21G basis sets have been performed for the cluster series Li _n ⁺ , Li _n , and Li _n ^– (wheren=2–7). Thirty-two optimized structures are discussed and reported, many of which (especially for the anionic structures) have not yet been considered. The calculations suggest that for all three species the optimum geometries are planar. Of the two levels of theories that were investigated, STO-6G//STO-6G and STO6-21G//STO-6G, the latter hybrid theory was found to be less reliable. In particular, for the anionic structures these calculations should provide a platform from which more sophisticated, i.e., configuration interaction, geometry optimization can be performed.     

Preparation of [5,6]- and [6,6]-oxahomofullerene derivatives and their interconversion by Lewis acid assisted reactions of fullerene mixed peroxides

[60]Fullerene mixed peroxides C60(O)(OOtBu)4 exhibit chemo- and regioselective reactions under mild conditions. The epoxy moiety is opened by ferric chloride to form vicinal hydroxy chloride C60Cl(OH)(OOtBu)4. BF3 is also effective in opening the epoxy moiety. The O-O bond of the fullerene mixed peroxide is cleaved by aluminum chloride to form both [5,6]- and [6,6]-fullerene hemiketals (oxohomo[60]fullerenes). A Hock-type rearrangement is proposed for the formation of the hemiketals, in which a fullerene C-C bond is cleaved. Lewis acids and/or visible light can initiate isomerization of the hemiketal isomers. Single-crystal X-ray analysis and theoretical calculations confirmed the results.     

Transitions between disordered phases in supercooled liquid silicon

We have investigated the transitions between disordered phases in supercooled liquid silicon using computer simulations. The thermodynamic properties were directly obtained from the free energy, which was computed using the recently proposed reversible scaling method. The calculated free energies of the crystalline and liquid phases of silicon at zero pressure, obtained using the environment dependent interatomic potential, are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. The results show that, at zero pressure, a weak first-order liquid-liquid transition occurs at 1135 K and a continuous liquid-amorphous transition takes place at 843 K. These results are consistent with the existence of a second critical point for the liquid-liquid transition at a negative pressure.
